Ineos Just Made the Grenadier Even Cooler
Last year, Ineos showcased an even more rugged version of the Grenadier , a prototype with portal axles. Now, the company has announced it is putting the vehicle into production with the help of Letech, the German off-road aftermarket specialist and builder. The upgrade adds a heavy-duty five-link front and rear suspension, portal axles with offset wheel hubs, and 37-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain off-road tires to the Grenadier and Grenadier Quartermaster Trialmasters . The tires wrap around 18-inch Hutchinson Industries forged beadlock alloy wheels. Photo by: Ineos Photo by: Ineos The portal axle modification increases the Grenadier's ground clearance by 7.3 inches, to 17.7 inches. It also increases the vehicle's wading depth to 41.3 inches, up from 31.5. Ineos says the upgrade gives the Grenadier greater wheel travel, better axle articulation, and a wider footprint. Letech also adds a tire pressure control system, high-performance brakes, a front winch system, and a spare wheel carrier. Visual upgrades include extended wheel arches, off-road running boards, a multi-function rear ladder with a jerry can mount, a roof rack, LED spotlights, and unique badging. The drivetrain remains unchanged, with the Grenadier and Quartermaster available with either BMW's 3.0-liter B57 diesel or B58 gasoline engines. Inside, each Letech Ineos features heated front seats, a premium sound system, leather, privacy glass, carpeted floor mats, and all the standard equipment that comes with the Trialmaster trims. Photo by: Ineos The Grenadier and Quartermaster start at €170,000 and €171,000, respectively, excluding VAT ($198,765 and $199,918 at today's exchange rate). Ineos builds the vehicles at its factory before sending them to Letech's facility to complete. The order books are now open, but limited to European customers for now. Ineos said it had received interest from over 1,000 private customers after revealing the prototypes at last year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Hopefully, the company will find it in its heart to send at least a few examples Stateside. It costs £150k but it might be the most capable 4x4 you can buy off the peg
The Ineos Grenadier was already one of the most versatile and off-road focused cars on sale, but it just got even more capable thanks to off-road experts at Letech. The German firm famous for modifying the Mercedes G-Class has just added portal axles and other upgrades to both the Ineos Grenadier and the Quartermaster pick-up. Advertisement - Article continues below Orders for the Ineos Grendaier Trialmaster X Letech have opened in Europe with the Grenadier costing 170,000 euros (roughly £150,000) and the Quartermaster costing 1,000 euros more - excluding VAT. That marks a steep increase over the regular Grenadier Station Wagon and Quartermaster, which both kick off at £62,495 here in the UK. There's a good reason though because Letech has added all the necessary modifications you need to take the Ineos almost anywhere. The most significant change is indeed those portal axles - something we've seen previously on the Mercedes-AMG G 63 4x4². Portal axles essentially elevate the ride height via gears in the wheel hub - Mercedes saw a gain of 110mm to the G-Class' ground clearance by employing the tech in the G 63 4x4². The Ineos gets a giant increase of 186mm to give a total of 450mm and it's not just ground clearance where it impresses because wading depth is up from 800mm to 1,050mm as well. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Powering both vehicles are the same BMW-derived straight-six turbocharged petrol and diesel engines - meaning that the 3,500kg towing capacity is retained. The Station Wagon (the SUV style model) has a payload capacity of 540kg while the Quartermaster pick-up comes with a 642kg capacity. Letech's Grenadier and Quartermaster Trialmaster are also fitted with a new heavy-duty five-link front and rear suspension layout and 37-inch Mud Terrain off-road tyres from BFGoodrich. The 18-inch forged alloy wheels are also new, while Letech has added a high performance braking system, extended wheel arches, a front-mounted winch and a rear ladder attachment. There's also a jerry can, which might be just as well because we struggled to get over 20mpg in the Quartermaster recently. Making sure you can see where you're going off-road, Letech has added six old-school roof lights, plus there's a roof rack a spare wheel carrier and exclusive 'Trialmaster x Letech' Door Sill Scuff Plates and A-pillar badging to ensure no one mistakes it for a regular Ineos. The standard Ineos' five-year/unlimited mileage factory warranty is retained with Letech's additions being covered by a two-year warranty. Ineos Grenadier gets portal axles for £147k
Ineos will sell the extreme portal-axled version of the Grenadier 4x4 shown at last year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, with prices starting at €170,000 (£147,000). Called the Grenadier Trialmaster X Letech, it can be had as both an SUV and a pick-up, with a choice of BMW-supplied 3.0-litre straight sixes powered by petrol or diesel. Built by German firm Letech, it replaces the regular Grenadier's coil suspension with a new portal-axle design with five reinforced links at its front and rear ends, and offset wheel hubs. Combined with a set of 18in Hutchinson Industries beadlock wheels and 37in BFGoodrich tyres, this raises the Grenadier's ground clearance by 186mm to 450mm and its wading depth rises to 1050mm. The new axles are also said to provide greater wheel articulation and better weight distribution, further improving the 4x4's off-road capabilities. Advertisement Completing the package are flared wheel arches, a ladder with a jerry can mount, spotlights, a spare wheel carrier and a front winch capable of lugging 4.5 tonnes. The conversion will be offered first in European Union and European Economic Area (EEA) markets. Ineos has yet to confirm whether it will be launched in the UK, saying only that a wider roll-out is 'subject to future announcements'. It added that it has received more than 1000 expressions of interest from customers, such as from rescue services. The decision to offer the portal-axle conversion officially confirms Autocar's previous report that it was being considered alongside a range of other special editions, in a bid to maximise the brand's revenues from relatively few sales.
