Steven Wilson, 49, was taking part in the Etape Loch Ness race on Sunday when the fatal crash happened. Police Scotland Sergeant Lewis Macleod said: 'Our thoughts remain with Mr Wilson's family and friends at this difficult time. Our inquiries into the crash are ongoing and we ask anyone who witnessed the crash and hasn't spoken to police to come forward.' The Etape Loch Ness follows a 66-mile route around Loch Ness and surrounding roads. Etape Loch Ness event director Malcolm Sutherland said earlier: 'We are truly devastated by the news and our heartfelt thoughts are with the rider's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Steven Wilson, 49, was taking part in the event when he was involved in a collision with a BMW on Inverness' Island Bank Road at about 12:10. Police said he was taken to the city's Raigmore Hospital where he died a short time later. The cycling event was held around the shores of Loch Ness and involved thousands of entrants. Steven Wilson, 49, was hit by a BMW 120 M Sport vehicle on Island Bank Road during the Loch Ness Etape event around 12.10pm on Sunday. Organisers said the man was hit next to the event area, which follows a 66-mile route on 'traffic-free' roads, and received immediate medical attention. The 49-year-old was was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness and pronounced dead a short time later. Police said enquiries into the crash remain ongoing at this time. A man who died following a collision with a car during a cycling event in the Highlands last weekend has been named by police. Steven Wilson, 49, was struck by a BMW at around 12.10pm on Sunday, April 27, on Island Bank Road, Inverness. He was one of thousands of cyclists taking part in the annual Etape Loch Ness race. Emergency services attended the scene, with the area cordoned off by police. He was rushed to the city's Raigmore Hospital , where he sadly died a short time later. Police Scotland have since launched an investigation into the incident, which happened next to the event area, and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them. Sergeant Lewis Macleod said: 'Our thoughts remain with Mr Wilson's family and friends at this difficult time . 'Our enquiries into the crash are ongoing and we ask anyone who witnessed the crash and hasn't spoken to police to come forward.' A statement shared by Etape Loch Ness on the event's Facebook page on Monday read: "It is with great sadness that we confirm a fatality occurred during yesterday's Etape Loch Ness event. "A 49-year-old man was involved in a collision with a vehicle next to the event area in Inverness shortly after midday. Despite receiving immediate medical attention from emergency services, he sadly died later in hospital ." Etape Loch Ness Event Director, Malcolm Sutherland said: 'We are truly devastated by the news and our heartfelt thoughts are with the rider's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We are offering them our full support, and also supporting those affected at the event.' Organisers said they are working closely with the police and relevant authorities as their investigation is carried out. The statement added that they request that the privacy of those involved is respected, and echoed the force's appeal for witnesses. The driver of the BMW, who was male, and his female passenger were uninjured, and the road was closed while officers began their probe, with crash investigators scouring the scene. The road was then reopened at around 6pm, and the force said that "enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the crash". Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident 1334 of 27 April, 2025.
