Eargo 8 Hearing Aids Review: Too Expensive

It's been more than two years since Eargo last updated its hearing aid hardware, and that's not a slight: Eargo makes some fine products that have successfully stood the test of time. Upgrades for the sake of upgrades are never a good idea. But the hearing aid world of today is in flux, and it's beginning to diverge from the way it looked back in 2023. Not only is technology changing, but so is the business landscape. Namely, Eargo recently merged with hearX (maker of the Lexie brand hearing aids), forming a parent company called LXE. The premium Eargo brand remains unchanged, but consolidation like this is usually a sign that prices may come down as the manufacturer landscape shakes out a bit. Alas, don't hold your breath that Eargo, which has always had expensive hardware, will be cutting prices any time soon. In fact, with the Eargo 8, the company has released its priciest hearing aids to date, though the quality of the product is compelling enough to merit at least some level of consideration. Smarter Aids Photograph: Chris Null Like nearly all of Eargo's models, the Eargo 8 are fully in-the-ear hearing aids, designed explicitly to keep size at a minimum. At 0.94 grams each, the tiny, cylindrical Eargo 8 are functionally the same size as the Eargo 7 and Eargo 5 before them, though a bit more bulbous—almost bottle-shaped—rather than cylindrical. The real upgrades are under the hood. The biggest update involves the way the Eargo 8 handles noise. A new feature called Smart Sound Adjust 'analyzes your environment and automatically adjusts to the noise levels when entering a noisy restaurant or crowded place,' the idea being that the app will tweak its noise cancellation levels automatically in response to ambient sound. The other added feature is a device scanner, which Eargo describes as an on-demand 'wellness check' for your aids, ensuring they aren't clogged with earwax. (This feature wasn't available when I reviewed the product, so I couldn't test it.) In daily use, I found the Eargo 8 hearing aids to be top-notch, with no discernible difference in quality over the Eargo 7. I found my voice to be a bit over-amplified—a common complaint with hearing aids—with no good way to adjust it. Otherwise, hearing support was solid, with no hiss and any feedback limited to minor instances when removing or inserting the aids. Like most high-quality hearing aids, the units provided me with just a moderate boost where I needed it the most, and the auto-adjust noise cancellation seemed to work well, though there's no indication as to how much noise cancellation is being applied at any time. That's because, like all of Eargo's premium aids, communication between the aids and the Eargo app is a one-way street. You can use the app to change volume or environmental programs, but the aids don't report their status back to the app. All changes are confirmed when the aids beep a couple of times in your ear, only offering a voice response when volume hits 'min' or 'max' or when changing environmental modes.

MacGyver Mom Saves the Day After Teen Daughter's Prom Dress Rips 5 Minutes Before Photos (Exclusive)

In April, Allie Kampas and her parents were getting ready to take her younger sister, Lexie, to her prom photo location to meet her friends But just five minutes before they were set to leave, the zipper on Lexie's dress completely split, leaving it wide open Though Lexie was ready to rush to the mall for a new dress, her mom, Amy, 54, decided to try fixing it herselfAllie Kampas and her parents were getting ready to take her younger sister, Lexie, to her prom photo location to meet her friends. But just five minutes before they were set to leave, Lexie's boyfriend helped zip up her dress after filming a TikTok transition and the zipper completely split, leaving the dress wide open. Panicking, the high school junior screamed, 'MOOOOMMMMM, SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED!' Though Lexie was ready to rush to the mall for a new dress, her mom, Amy, 54, decided to try fixing it herself. After several failed attempts, Amy quickly realized that the traditional fix wasn't going to work. At the time, the family, who lives in Orange County, Calif., was at their newly built house, which wasn't fully moved into and barely had supplies. But Amy wasn't deterred. She began scouring the house for anything that might help. "I literally had to think fast about what I had access to in a house we don't even live in yet," Amy tells PEOPLE exclusively. "I learned how to sew at a young age, but I had nothing here. So I opened a bathroom drawer and thought, 'What do I have?' I saw dental floss and figured that could work." "Then I needed something to feed it through, and I spotted bobby pins," Amy continues. "Then I needed to poke holes — so I grabbed the cuticle scissors. I started threading the floss with the bobby pins, poking holes along the broken zipper line. My daughter was panicking, ready to leave and find a new dress, but I just said, 'Nope, we're going to figure this out.' Stitch by stitch, the dress started coming back together, and Lexie calmed down. It took maybe five minutes, tops, and each stitch gave me more confidence.' "Honestly, we were in a house we don't even live in full-time, so watching her open drawers and improvise was wild — but not surprising," Allie adds. "She always finds a way." Throughout the whole dilemma, Allie captured the moment on camera. Later, she posted it to her TikTok account, thinking it was both hilarious and amazing. Then, the video went viral, amassing more than 13.4 million views and 1,300 comments. The response was overwhelmingly positive. 'There's nothing a woman cannot do,' one user commented. 'I remember so many times saying, 'It's ok, my mom can fix it!' And that's the kind of mom I want to be,' another wrote. Someone else said, "I just learned a serious life hack from your mother.' After the first video went viral, Allie took to her TikTok again to share a video of the finished product. "When the video went viral, the family was thrilled to read all the positive and relatable comments," Allie says. "It felt extra special with Mother's Day coming up. My mom was especially glad that people saw the value of being resourceful and not giving up — something she's always taught us." "We were overwhelmed in the best way," she adds. "So many people shared similar stories of their moms swooping in during a fashion crisis. It felt like a big, warm group hug from the Internet." Read the original article on People

Leaning into a new role, Lexie Hull is 'playing with a high level of confidence' for Fever

ATLANTA — Lexie Hull has seen her role change many times over her young career. She came off the bench as a rookie in 2022, averaging just 12 minutes per game. In 2023, she was a full-time starter, averaging 20.2 minutes and 4.6 points per game. She went back to the bench to start 2024, then surged after the Olympic break, forcing her way into the starting lineup. Now, with the Fever bringing in veterans like DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard and Sophie Cunningham, Hull will likely see her role decrease again. But she won't let that put her into a box. Even if she's coming off the bench instead of starting, getting fewer minutes than she has in past seasons, she doesn't let that change her game. And that, Fever coach Steph White said, is what makes her such a great player. 'When you accept your role, as Lexie does, you can't allow it to put you in a box, right?' White said following Indiana's preseason finale on Saturday. 'Your role can change throughout the course of the season. Your role can change throughout the course of your career. So, you want to be able to stretch and expand. And I think Lexie has done a really good job of putting herself in position for that.' Fever win preseason finale: Cunningham leaves with ankle injury, Clark gets technical Hull came off the bench for 23 minutes in Indiana's preseason game against Atlanta on Saturday, including the entire fourth quarter alongside the Fever backups. Playing alongside Sydney Colson, Brianna Turner, Jaelyn Brown and Makayla Timpson, Hull was the star of that fourth quarter. She scored 11 points in the fourth quarter alone, putting her total up to a team-high 14 points. She shot 6 of 12 from the field, adding five rebounds and four assists to push the Fever over the Dream. She found open lanes for easy assists, split defenders for layups, and developed that mid-range game. As the only Fever returner on the floor in the fourth quarter, she took on that leadership role and did it with confidence — something she was able to hone with the competitive Fever training camp. 'Confidence comes from getting the reps, the game-like reps, over and over again in practice,' Hull said. 'And you know, our team is super competitive, so every single day that we have training camp so far has felt pretty much game-like, like we're all taking it very serious, and it starts in practice." That confidence also came from her work (and success) in the WNBA offseason. Hull played with Unrivaled, the new 3x3 league in Miami, and that type of game not only helped her stay in shape for the season, but it forced her to be even more in touch with her defensive abilities and one-on-one play. Optimistic outlook after injury: Will Sophie Cunningham be ready for Fever's season opener? Winning an Unrivaled championship with the Rose Basketball Club helped, too. 'Lexie is playing with such a high level of confidence,' White said. 'You saw that in the second half of last season, (she) started to grow into that. I think you saw it a lot in Unrivaled as well. It unlocked, I think, a little bit of creativity.' Hull's heroics on Saturday helped the Fever go 3-0 in the preseason, recording wins over the Washington Mystics (OT), Brazilian National Team and Atlanta Dream. With a team like this, Hull said, she knows she has to trust the process. She may not get as many minutes as she had before, have as big of a role, but it's important all the same. Successful teams are built with players like Hull, who have that selfless, team-first mindset at their core. 'It's gonna be an exciting season,' Hull said. 'I think, more than anything, we're a deep team, and I think everyone's really bought into trusting the process this season. It's gonna stick. It might not start off super pretty, but we know that putting in the work, putting trust into the coaching staff, trusting each other, that by the end of the season, we'll be exactly where we want to be.'
