Lexus Sport Concept Revealed in a Surprise Debut at The Quail
Lexus surprised onlookers at Monterey Car Week by showing off a new Sport Concept at The Quail. The new Sport Concept appears to be an evolution of the Electrified Sport Concept that Lexus teased in 2021. Lexus says that the Sport Coupe "blends dynamic and emotional elements into a vision for a next-generation sports car," but we're still in the dark about technical details and production plans. Monterey Car Week is an ideal setting for a surprise reveal, and Lexus has taken the opportunity to unveil a new Sport Concept this morning at The Quail. The rakish coupe is reminiscent of the Electrified Sport Concept that Lexus first teased in 2021, but features a more polished design that looks fit for production. The company has only given vague clues about the Sport Concept's overarching mission, stating that the "future-focused yet truly authentic sportscar signals the way forward for Lexus design." Its look is undeniably striking, with a low-slung silhouette and familiar checkmark headlights integrated into angular cutouts that bookend its front fascia. Lexus With only a few comments to work from, the Sport Concept's technical details are still up in the air. Lexus is currently working on another supercar dubbed the LFR, which is expected to feature a twin-turbocharged hybrid V-8 powertrain. With internal combustion covered on that front, we suspect that the Sport Concept is hiding an all-electric powertrain. Lexus When Lexus initially showed off its Electrified Sport Concept in 2021, the company projected a low-two-second 60-mph time and 430 miles of range courtesy of solid-state batteries. We'll have to wait for more information, but those could also be performance and range targets for the Sport Concept. Lexus Austin Parsons Associate Editor Austin's car fixation began at a young age and at 1:64 scale. Eventually, Hot Wheels weren't cutting it anymore, so he developed an obsession with his father's full-sized 1965 Ford Mustang instead. Desperate to break into the automotive industry, he bartered his way into a job at a local BMW dealership by promising to stop hurling nerdy technical facts at the salesmen who came into the neighboring coffee shop where he worked. That was also around the time when he started writing automotive reviews, news articles, and technical guides for a number of local and international publications. Now at Car and Driver, Austin brings more than 10 years of experience in the automotive industry and an all-so-common love-hate relationship with German engineering to the table. Read full bio

This New Lexus Concept Looks Exactly Like the Rumored Lexus LFR Supercar
The latest car news, reviews, and features. If you're a fan of Lexus performance coupes, pay attention. This rendering, called simply the 'Sport Concept,' is one mighty coherent-looking design, and with Lexus axing the RC and slowly winding down the touring-oriented LC, the company has plenty of room for a sexy new two-door entry. Back in 2022, the company trademarked 'LFR,' following the naming scheme of the now-departed LFA. Coincidence? Out front, we can't help but note the resemblance to the LFA. The sides and rear both feature complex body work suggesting the sort of performance-bred aerodynamic package we'd expect from a successor to a car that prioritizes going fast over touring around in comfort. Rumors surrounding the LFR project have suggested it would be powered by a front-mounted, possibly electrified V8, but there's a distinct silhouette of something under this concept's rear glass that looks an awful lot like an engine cover. While Toyota has been openly developing a mid-engine race car that is rumored to be a testbed for a new MR2, we've heard no rumors of anything similar on the Lexus side. Let's call this a simple concept hallucination and move on… Lexus Lexus Lexus also took a couple of concept-worthy liberties with the design. if you look carefully at the rear deck, the car's exhaust outlets are tucked up under the spoiler. The doohickey between the rear glass and roof appears to be either a drone, or a heat extraction system. But the latter wouldn't be necessary unless there are powertrain elements under that rear glass… Lexus dropped a brief CGI teaser video early Friday, along with this (equally succinct) press statement: 'This morning, Lexus debuted the Lexus Sport Concept before the crowd enjoying The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering at The Quail Lodge and Golf Club in Carmel, California. The progressively styled, future-focused yet truly authentic sportscar signals the way forward for Lexus design. This inspiring concept car features a wide, low-profile two-door form that blends dynamic and emotional elements into a vision for a next-generation sports car.' We've been crowing for a replacement for the LFA ever since Lexus dropped it. Call us more than cautiously optimistic; this looks promising. Got a tip? Let us know at tips@

Lexus Reveals LFA-Inspired Styling For Its Next-Generation Sports Car
Lexus Finally Hints At Its Next Supercar In A Meaningful Way Say hello to the Lexus Sport Concept, a surprise reveal at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering at this year's edition of Monterey Car Week. Far more evolved than the Electrified Sport Concept yet still just on the other side of reality, this concept is described as a 'progressively styled, future-focused yet truly authentic sports car [that] signals the way forward for Lexus design.' In other words, we can expect at least certain elements of this concept to find their way to a production vehicle, like the next Lexus LC and RC, or better yet, a successor to the iconic LFA. Importantly, the cosmetic approach is relatively far removed from the V8-powered coupe we spied a month ago, which also made a run up the Goodwood Hillclimb soon after with a racing version close behind. A Stunning Design That Is Bordering On Being Production-Ready The abovementioned Toyota GT Racing Concept now seems to foreshadow something with a Gazoo Racing badge, despite its rumored 800-horsepower output that would make it a competitor to $200,000 cars like the Porsche 911 and AMG GT (the latter of which a prototype of Toyota's GT Racing Concept has been spied being benchmarked against). The Lexus Sport Concept in California is much sleeker and more cohesive with current Lexus design elements, while the Gazoo Racing Concepts at Goodwood still looked like Toyotas despite their camouflage. That being said, we must admit that the proportions are similar. At the front, the Lexus logo still appears in the daytime running lights as it does in something like the aging but beautiful LC, and the angular air dam and vented hood, though more aggressive than current Lexus designs, would fit well with the brand's existing designs if they make production. The narrow rearview cameras likely won't be available (at least not in all markets), but the vent behind the front arch that leads the eye to an intake behind the B-pillar manages to look dramatic without being over-the-top. The fin ahead of the rear wheel is also treading the line between reality and concept. This line is carried upward on the rear haunches, leading to a full-width taillight bar that leans down into the rear bumper as the headlights do into the front fascia. A massive rear diffuser sits below a sleek fastback with an adaptive rear wing, and a slender fin on the rear glass acts as a center high-mounted stop light; none of these elements look too extreme for production, though they are likely to be mildly toned down. Plenty Of Questions To Answer Overall, the design looks very much like what a slightly less wide LFA might look like today, but then again, the Lexus LC borrowed and modernized a lot of design elements from the LFA, so this concept could work as a preview of a successor to either. We should also note that the few photos Lexus has provided don't clearly show whether there is an exhaust, so there's a possibility that this might test the waters for a future EV, though that seems unlikely given market conditions and Toyota's aversion to producing too many EVs until the market wants them. It's also worth remembering that the departing Lexus RC is long overdue for replacement, which brings us back to our opening theory: whether or not this concept previews a specific model, its futuristic design looks feasible from multiple angles, and we fully expect to see a production vehicle with some of the concept's aesthetics being teased before long. The end of the video below seemingly hints at an imminent track outing… About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile
