Review: Hanu, an interactive new Korean restaurant
In Dubai's burgeoning restaurant scene, a handful of restaurants make an instant impact. Sushisamba was one such restaurant, which brought a trifecta of excellent views, dishes and vibes to the Palm Tower in 2021. The man who can be credited with much of the success on the culinary front is chef Kyung Soo Moon, the restaurant's then-executive chef. But now he's turned his attention back to his roots for Hanu, a modern interpretation of Korean cuisine. Found at St Regis Gardens, it's in good company with restaurants like Leña, Aretha, Chez Wam and Tresind Studio among its neighbours. Once inside, we're met with dark and moody interiors with intricate attention to detail. Rich dark walnut woods, striking artworks and Korean pine trees lace the traditional with more contemporary accents befitting of a glamourous new Dubai restaurant. You enter through the lounge and bar where a DJ spins enigmatic beats that are thankfully not overpowering, through to a table in the restaurant. If you're unfamiliar with Korean BBQ, the knowledgeable team are on-hand to make recommendations, and confidently talk us through the concept and must-try dishes. The wagyu beef gyoza (Dhs68) are one such dish, piping hot parcels of Japanese A5 wagyu short rib and shiitake mushroom encased in a dough that's the perfect level of crispy and tender. Forget everything you know about vegetables and order the Korean fried cauliflower (Dhs65), coated in a spicy sauce and served with a side of yuja radish to balance the heat. The almost-too-pretty-to-eat beef tartelette (Dhs110) is another playful interpretation of classic Korean flavours, with a soft quail egg marinated in soy sauce, served on top of a tartelette of beef jongjorim, a layer of caviar giving it a Dubai elevation. To truly get a taste of Korean BBQ, order the 'Meat Me At The Grill' (Dhs365 per person), where you'll be served four cuts of premium meat with a selection of sides, condiments and a stew. It's a generous offering – much like it would be if you dined at Chef Moon's family home – given added wow-factor with the meats cooked on the charcoal grill built into each table. Each buttery cut of meat is full of flavour and perfectly cooked, from the Australian Black Angus to the Japanese A4 Wagyu striploin. For dessert, a beautifully presented golden pear delight (Dhs63) is a light and fresh way to end the meal. Diced Korean pear is paired with a walnut crumble and a scoop of tonka bean ice cream. Verdict: A focus on quality cuisine and service makes this a restaurant deserving of a place on your foodie bucket list. Top 10 Takeover kicks off its 11th year: How to get tickets for dining series at Leña
The Detroit Free Press and Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers recently unveiled the 2025 Restaurant of the Year, Restaurant of the Year Classic and 10 Best New Restaurants and Experiences in metro Detroit. And with that, the popular Top 10 Takeover dining series featuring these restaurants is kicking off. The dining series is in its 11th year showcasing the top metro Detroit restaurants and dining experiences named by Detroit Free Press dining critic Lyndsay C. Green. What's unique about each experience is diners get an exclusive and personal interaction at the restaurant or establishment. Typically, the experiences take place as a private event and, at times, when the restaurant is closed. Starting Thursday, ticket sales kick off for the first stop in this year's dining series: Lena on May 1. Seatings are at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and diners will enjoy a four course, chef curated meal at Leña, a Brush Park neighborhood spot. Leña, with its Spanish influence and wood-fired cooking, landed in the No. 2 spot on the 2025 Detroit Free Press/Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Top 10 New Restaurants & Dining Experiences. 'When a restaurant draws inspiration from a particular country or region, it can be difficult not to veer into kitschy territory,' wrote Green. 'Leña, the new Brush Park neighborhood restaurant with Spanish influence, strikes a beautiful balance.' Tickets for the meal are $90 per person and include a uniquely curated menu, gratuity, and tax. Since the inception of the dining series, the Free Press and Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers have maintained a charitable aspect. That effort continues this year with $3 of each ticket sale donated to Forgotten Harvest to help fight food insecurity in metro Detroit. No. 2: Leña in Detroit offers Spanish flair without usual suspects
Leña takes the No. 2 spot on the 2025 Detroit Free Press/Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Top 10 New Restaurants & Dining Experiences list for its unique, personal approach to Spanish cooking. When a restaurant draws inspiration from a particular country or region, it can be difficult not to veer into kitschy territory. Leña, the new Brush Park neighborhood restaurant with Spanish influence, strikes a beautiful balance. There are elements that honor the most darling qualities of Spanish culture: tapas that embrace a penchant for sharing, menu items written in Spanish and interpretations of classic dishes you'd devour throughout the Catalan and Basque Countries. Still, meals at Leña feel entirely their own. The usual suspects are M.I.A. There are no gambas al ajillo or papas bravas. The Spanish tortilla made an appearance in the restaurant's early days, but was bumped for a more seasonal item fancied by Executive Chef Mike Conrad. The brainchild of the team behind Shelby, Leña instead places an emphasis simply on wood-fired cooking and farm-fresh ingredients. Conrad takes squid to the fire, charring it until the tips curl. He trusts Detroit-based farms, such as Core City's Fisheye and Hio Farms for produce that shows up in plates of ensalada verde, or bright gem lettuce punched up with fresh herbs, sweet Manchego and briny boquerones. And pastry chef Lena Sareini takes a playful approach to dessert. An early arroz con leche, or rice pudding with a walnut praline center and dots of fig leaf oil, was served in a colorful caviar tin. [ Subscribe to the Eat Drink Freep newsletter for extras and insider scoops on Detroit-area dining. ] A winter dish, the butifarra, was a simple pleasure. A single swirl of pork sausage sat in a sea of stewed chickpeas, golden raisins and pine nuts for a sweet-savory world of flavors. 2720 Brush St., Detroit. 313-262-6082; Save the Date: On Thursday, May 1, Leña, the Detroit Free Press and Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers will host a Top 10 Takeover dinner.
