Red Sox' reliever transferred to 60-day IL after experiencing injury setback
BOSTON — Veteran Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks, who's been out since May 24 with right hip inflammation, suffered a setback with the injury on Monday and on Tuesday was transferred to the 60-day IL. 'It grabbed him again,' said Alex Cora. 'They're actually going to talk today to see where we're at and probably get a second opinion. But it wasn't good (Monday). He said the harder he pushed, the (more) he felt it. 'I don't want to say we're back at square one, but we'll talk and seek other opinions and then see what happens.' Hendriks had appeared in 14 games, pitching 13.2 innings, with an 0-2 record and 6.59 ERA. Hendriks, who was signed by the Red Sox in February of 2024 as he rehabbed from Tommy John surgery, made his return to the mound on April 20. But as he built up arm strength and attempted to come back from pitching just five innings since the end of the 2022 season, Hendriks never regained his customary effectiveness. He also dealt with stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma late in 2022, which sidelined him for much of the 2023 season. When he finally returned to the mound, he pitched just five innings before suffering a torn UCL, requiring Tommy John surgery. In spring training, he was viewed as a candidate to close or pitch in high leverage spots, though the arrival of elbow inflammation toward the end of the spring sidelined him for the first few weeks of the season. Red Sox' Alex Cora gives ‘positive' injury updates on 3 relievers; ‘Big step'
CHICAGO — Red Sox reliever Justin Slaten, who has been on the injured list since June 1 with right shoulder inflammation, has begun playing catch again. Slaten played catch on June 27 but the Red Sox halted his throwing progression at that point and limited him to plyo work in the gym 'to get his strength back.' 'Just playing catch but that's a big step,' manager Alex Cora said before Boston's game against the Cubs on Saturday at Wrigley Field. 'From plyos in the weight room to playing catch, that's positive news. He's very important.' The 27-year-old righty has a 3.47 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, four holds, three saves and a .171 batting average against in 24 outings. Two other Red Sox relievers are also progressing. Liam Hendriks — who has been on the IL since May 30 (retroactive to May 28) with right hip inflammation — is throwing out to 120 feet. He had been transferred to the 60-day IL July 8 after experiencing a setback. Hendriks has struggled this season, allowing 10 earned runs in 13 ⅔ innings (6.59 ERA). Luis Guerrero — who has been on the IL since June 28 with a right elbow strain — is in Fort Myers where he's 'about to start throwing bullpens," Cora said. Guerrero has allowed eight earned runs in 17 ⅓ innings (4.15 ERA). 'We're in a good spot bullpen-wise but we're going to get better,' Cora said. Red Sox's Alex Bregman Offers Surprising Confession Following Death Threats
Red Sox's Alex Bregman Offers Surprising Confession Following Death Threats originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Nearly two months ago, Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman watched teammate Liam Hendriks acknowledge a recent rash of death threats after a poor performance. Advertisement The Hendriks situation came shortly after Bregman's former teammate, Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers, found himself in a similar incident. Houston police announced in June that they identified an overseas bettor who threatened McCullers when inebriated. Already in his 10th season, Bregman has encountered his share of threatening and vile social media messages. At this point, though, the three-time All-Star doesn't even bother caring what fans or social media users say. 'We kind of try and block it out and put filters up so we don't have to look at the hate,' Bregman told The Athletic. Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex BregmanJunfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Bregman's dismissal is somewhat surprising, especially considering that two of his teammates felt they needed to publicly address the threats that they received. Progressive Field security removed a Cleveland Guardians fan in late April who made an inappropriate comment to Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran regarding the latter's mental health; Duran revealed earlier this year that he attempted suicide in 2022. Advertisement Bregman isn't the only All-Star who admitted they tend to ignore negative online posts. 'You just really try not to look at social media stuff or anything and stay focused on who you are as a player,' Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson said. Bregman owns a .298 average, 11 homers, 35 RBIs, and a .927 OPS in 234 plate appearances. He's well on pace for his fourth consecutive 4.0 bWAR season, and his .380 on-base percentage is his highest since 2019. Red Sox make roster moves as All-Star break draws near
The post Red Sox make roster moves as All-Star break draws near appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Boston Red Sox have had an eventful first half of the 2025 season. Trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants was the lowlight, sending down Kristian Campbell has raised questions about his future, and they are still out of the postseason picture. They are finishing up their first half with big games against the Colorado Rockies and the Tampa Bay Rays. But first, the Red Sox made three pitching moves involving Liam Hendriks, Richard Fitts, and Isaiah Campbell. The Red Sox called up Isaiah Campbell from AAA Worcester. He started his career with the Seattle Mariners, posting a 2.83 ERA in 27 relief appearances in 2023. The Red Sox traded for him after that season, hoping to add to their bullpen for the 2024 campaign. He made eight appearances last year with a 16.20 ERA, causing some concerns for his future. But with 30 appearances at a 3.89 ERA in AAA this year, he is back with the big club. Advertisement Richard Fitts goes down to Worcester to make room for Campbell on the Red Sox roster. He has made 12 starts over the past two seasons at the major-league level with a 3.31 ERA. He has one bad start on his 2025 resume, allowing five earned runs in one inning against the Los Angeles Angels on June 2. But even after 5.2 innings of two-run ball over the weekend, they sent him down. The Red Sox have not had Liam Hendriks in their bullpen since May 27 with a hip injury. According to Ian Browne, they moved him to the 60-day IL on Tuesday due to a setback. The move would allow him to return to the Red Sox on July 27, but the setback likely prevents that from happening. The Red Sox won the first game of their three-game series against the Rockies on Monday. They look to take the set on Tuesday with Brayan Bello on the hill. Australian Baseball League club Perth Heat confirm they will not compete this season
Perth Heat, WA's storied and successful baseball team, have withdrawn from the Australian Baseball League. The breeding ground for the likes of Major League baseballers such as All-Star Liam Hendriks, Luke Hughes and Warwick Saupold, the Heat will not add to their 15 Claxton Shields. The club have opted against joining a diminished ABL campaign next season, following the exit of two other teams and uncertain futures for another club. Staff and players were informed by team officials on Wednesday the Heat would not be competing in next season's ABL campaign. It follows Melbourne Aces decision in May to exit the league in favour of match-ups against Korean baseball sides, while reigning champion Canberra Cavalry cited the lack of certainty over the league's future when they pulled out not long afterwards. Perth's subsequent departure means the ABL's future appears bleak; Sydney Blue Sox, one of the three remaining teams, currently do not have an owner. Heartbreakingly, the Heat's final season in the ABL ended with their third straight ABL Championship Series defeat. More to come.
