Nizam rebukes Suhaimi over emotional rhetoric and unanswered RM7.5 billion question

Nizam KOTA KINABALU (May 19): Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Haji Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, has issued a firm rebuttal to recent comments by Libaran member of parliament Datuk Suhaimi Nasir, accusing him of being overly emotional and ignoring key issues of public accountability. Nizam thanked Suhaimi for what he described as 'closely monitoring' his actions, suggesting that his name still held enough influence to provoke strong reactions. 'Clearly, my name carries enough weight to elicit an angry and emotional tone — a sign that the truth, however bitter, unsettles those with vested interests,' said Nizam. In response to Suhaimi's remark urging him to 'look into the mirror,' Nizam retorted, 'Sometimes the mirror itself is cracked, and what one sees is merely the shadow of unresolved political grudges. Perhaps that is why he fails to distinguish between fact and sentiment.' The Apas assemblyman acknowledged his past involvement in government but dismissed any accusation of hypocrisy. 'I do not deny once being part of the government, and I do not hide my record. The difference is, I did not reappear after two decades of silence pretending to be as pure as a white cloth. I continued to serve and stay with the people — not just re-emerge to shape perceptions,' he said. Nizam also took issue with Suhaimi's reference to being 'grateful to Umno,' calling such a mindset outdated. 'I am unsure if he is still trapped in 1990s-style politics, where positions were seen as party gifts instead of a mandate from the people. I wish him a speedy recovery from that nostalgic delusion,' he added. He criticised Suhaimi for indirectly casting aspersions on current Sabah cabinet members, who he said were working together to rectify mistakes made by previous leaders, including those from Umno. 'This is a textbook example of spitting into the wind,' Nizam remarked. Central to Nizam's response was a demand for accountability regarding the RM7.5 billion in federal funding for basic infrastructure projects during the Umno-led administration. 'My question remains unanswered: What happened to the RM7.5 billion in basic infrastructure funds during the Umno era? So far, it has only been met with emotion, not data.' Nizam concluded by calling for mature leadership and constructive contributions. 'Sabah does not need politicians who get offended when criticized. Sabah needs those who can accept criticism, work quietly, and deliver results — not long essays filled with metaphors, sarcasm, and nostalgia for lost seats.' 'If Datuk Suhaimi and the current Sabah Umno leadership truly wish to change and leave behind the burdens of the past, then start by contributing — not attacking. And if dramatics are necessary, at least ensure the script is logical and the characters are not contradictory.' Nizam currently serves as the Information Chief of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, a component of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government.

Sabah Umno leader tells GRS rep to 'look in the mirror' over governance criticism

KOTA KINABALU: The debate over Sabah's governance record is heating up as the state election draws closer, with a Sabah Umno leader pushing back against a GRS assemblyman for being part of the same political system blamed for the state's long-standing infrastructure problems. Sabah Umno information chief, who is also Libaran MP, Datuk Suhaimi Nasir (pic) , said Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, who currently serves as the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, should "look in the mirror" before criticising others over the state's infrastructure challenges. "Between 1999 and 2023, when Sabah's timber revenue reached RM5.3bil, who were the ministers and assistant ministers responsible for managing these resources?" Suhaimi said in a statement on Thursday (May 15). "Who failed to manage the state's natural wealth properly? Despite years of massive revenue collections, who neglected basic infrastructure like water, electricity, and roads. These are not problems that appeared overnight, but the result of decades of poor governance," he added. Suhaimi was responding to Nizam's recent remarks, in which the latter defended the current GRS government, arguing that Sabah's infrastructure problems were inherited from previous administrations. "Don't blame the party, because parties have no life. It's the living ministers who must take responsibility – including you, Nizam," Suhaimi said. He further argued that Nizam and other GRS leaders, including Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, should take responsibility for these past failures, as they were part of the same administrations that oversaw these critical sectors. "Without Umno, you might still be waiting in line for a seat of power, never knowing the trust of the people," Suhaimi said. Suhaimi also dismissed attempts to deflect blame, arguing that the current Umno leadership in Sabah, made up of 90% new faces, is focused on correcting the mistakes of the past. "Don't try to cover up your own failures by throwing mud at others. Sabah needs leaders who know how to work, not just those who know how to put on a show," he added. "People don't need the voices of frogs from old political ponds. They need voices of sincere and honest development," he said.

Suhaimi accuses Nizam of hypocrisy, blames him for Sabah's development failures

Suhaimi KOTA KINABALU (May 16): Libaran member of parliament Datuk Suhaimi Nasir took Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Nizam Titingan, to task and accused him of hypocrisy and political betrayal in the ongoing debate over Sabah's development issues. Suhaimi, a senior Umno Sabah leader, said Nizam's recent public remarks on the state's challenges were a 'sudden burst of spirit' from someone deeply embedded in the system that had contributed to those problems. Nizam 'YB Nizam speaks as though he is a 'sin cleanser,' forgetting that he has been part of the Sabah government for years. The footprints of his failures are still clearly visible in the history of the state's administration,' Suhaimi said in a statement today. Suhaimi questioned Nizam's credibility in criticising Sabah's governance, pointing out that from 1999 to 2023, when the state reportedly earned RM5.3 billion in timber revenue, Nizam served as Assistant Finance Minister and now holds a senior role in the current GRS-led government. 'Datuk Nizam, you are part of the problem, not the solution. Who failed to manage the timber revenue, water, roads, and electricity projects? Do not blame the party, blame the ministers who were alive and responsible, including yourself,' Suhaimi asserted. The Libaran MP further reminded Nizam that several senior GRS leaders today including Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, were also part of the former state cabinet. 'If Nizam wants to point fingers over past failures, he should start with those who once sat beside him in the cabinet,' he added. Suhaimi did not hold back in criticising Nizam's departure from Umno, which had once backed him as a candidate, calling it an act of betrayal. 'Without Umno, you might still be waiting in line at the back, never having tasted power. Now, after jumping to GRS for the sake of power and position, you want to act like a people's hero? That's not the spirit of struggle, it is betrayal,' he opined. Highlighting that 90% of Sabah Umno's current leadership had no ties to previous state administrations, Suhaimi said the party is focused on reform, not defending past mistakes. 'We are not burdened by the sins of past administrations. We come forward with renewed resolve and a commitment to correct the mistakes left by people like Nizam,' said Suhaimi. He ended his statement with a clear message: Sabah needs effective leadership, not political theatrics. 'Do not try to cover your failures by throwing mud at others. The people do not need the croaks of frogs from the old political pond. They need sincere and honest voices of development,' he said.

Pan Borneo delay exposes poor planning, says MP

Kota Kinabalu: The move to set up two special committees to speed up land acquisition and utility relocation for the Pan Borneo Highway project shows weaknesses in early planning and project management. Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said while the committees, announced by Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya, could be seen as an effort, they reflected the government's failure to address known issues from the start. 'After years of waiting for the highway to be completed, only now is the government considering the formation of special committees, even though land acquisition and utility relocation issues have been known since the project was first announced,' he said in a statement today. 'Is the state government only taking action now because the delays have reached a critical stage? Where were the early action plans and proper coordination that should have been in place before the project even began?' Suhaimi also questioned the effectiveness of the newly formed committees, pointing out that previous committees had failed to produce significant improvements in the project's progress. 'We do not want these committees to serve merely as excuses to cover up administrative shortcomings and to shift responsibility,' he said. Calling for full transparency, Suhaimi urged the state government to disclose the latest project timeline, details of additional costs arising from the delays, and to ensure that all contractors and related agencies are held accountable. 'The people of Sabah have been patient enough. We do not want to hear more excuses. What the people want is for the highway to be completed quickly and safely, because it is not just a development project – it is the lifeline for our state's economy and the wellbeing of our people,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
