Liberal police investigate violent acts by teen ‘gang'

LIBERAL, Kan. (KSNW) — Police in Liberal are investigating a series of violent acts they say are carried out by a group of teens who may be organizing themselves as a gang. The incidents, which involve kidnapping, assaults, and other crimes, police say, are raising serious concerns within the community. County settles lawsuits over ex-deputy's sex crimes In a public safety announcement published on social media, Liberal police say the group may meet the legal definition of a criminal street gang under Kansas law. Police cited reports and video evidence show juveniles being ambushed, shot with Orbeez guns (water pellet guns), restrained with duct tape — including over their mouths — and even shocked with jumper cables. 'These are not harmless pranks,' the Liberal Police Department said in a statement. 'They are criminal acts and will be treated accordingly.' Arrest made after Liberal man dies from ‘suspicious burns'

LIBERAL, Kan. (KSNW) – An arrest has been made after a man died from suspicious burns in a fire last month in Liberal. The Liberal Police Department says they were contacted on Feb. 16 about an incident that had happened a day before. An unidentified man suffered significant burns at his home in the 200 block of South Clay in Liberal. He was flown to a Wichita hospital for treatment but died from his injuries. Woman trapped in wreckage along I-70 overnight found Monday An autopsy is underway to determine the exact cause of his death. Liberal police say they began investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death, and they identified a person of interest. They later arrested a 60-year-old woman in connection to his death. Formal charges are pending. The Liberal Fire Department, the Kansas Fire Marshal's Office, and the Seward County Medical Examiner's Office assisted with the investigation. For more Kansas news, click here.
