St. Louis Cardinals at Texas Rangers odds, picks and predictions The St. Louis Cardinals (32-24) face the Texas Rangers (27-30) in the opener of a 3-game set Friday. First pitch from Globe Life Field is set for 8:05 p.m. ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Cardinals vs. Rangers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: First meeting; Cardinals won 2-1 last year The Cards took 2 of 3 at the Baltimore Orioles earlier in the week, which culminated with a 6-4 victory Wednesday. SS Masyn Winn had 4 hits. He's now hitting .323 with 5 homers and 15 RBIs in 93 at-bats since moving to the 2-hole in the order. 2B Brendan Donovan went 3-for-5 with his fourth homer. The Rangers dropped 2 of 3 to the Toronto Blue Jays at home this week and scored 3 runs in the process. They lost Wednesday 2-0 and managed just 1 hit as the Jays had a bullpen game. SS Corey Seager went 0-for-4 with 2 K's in his first game back from the IL. The Rangers are just 2-8 in their last 10. Cardinals at Rangers projected starters LHP Matthew Liberatore vs. RHP Jack Leiter Liberatore (3-3, 2.73 ERA) makes his 11th start. He has a 1.01 WHIP, 1.2 BB/9 and 7.7 K/9 in 59 1/3 innings. Moneyline (ML) : Cardinals -135 (bet $135 to win $100) | Rangers +115 (bet $100 to win $115) : Cardinals -135 (bet $135 to win $100) | Rangers +115 (bet $100 to win $115) Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Cardinals -1.5 (+125) | Rangers +1.5 (-150) : Cardinals -1.5 (+125) | Rangers +1.5 (-150) Over/Under (O/U): 8.5 (O: -110 | U: -110) Cardinals at Rangers picks and predictions Prediction Cardinals 4, Rangers 2 The 25-year-old Liberatore has really come of age in 2025. He has allowed 1 ER in 3 of his last 4 starts, and 2 ER in the other. He has a 1.78 ERA with 21 K's in 25 1/3 IP during that stretch. With the Rangers scoring a measly 3 runs this week, Liberatore is a good reason to back the CARDINALS (-135). Give me MATTHEW LIBERATORE UNDER 2.5 EARNED RUNS (-130). He has allowed 3+ ER in just 1 of his 10 starts, and the Rangers' offense has struggled. The Cards are 5-4-1 O/U in their last 10, but the Rangers are 2-8. With Texas' inability to put runs on the board, coupled with the dominance Libby has shown, I'll take the UNDER 8.5 (-110). Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Pair of Young Cardinals Showing Early Signs of Unexpected Breakout Seasons
After winning 10 of their last 11 games, the St. Louis Cardinals are now 24-20 on the year. Some people may have written them off after a rough month of April, but the Cardinals now sit just a game back of the Cubs for first place in the NL Central. A lot has been going right for the Cardinals during this hot stretch. They've gotten a few great starts from guys like Erick Fedde and Miles Mikolas, the bullpen has been excellent, and hitters like Masyn Winn and Willson Contreras appear to have figured things out at the plate after getting off to slow starts. Advertisement Two players who have continued to shine during this recent hot stretch are two guys who have been great all year long. While the Cardinals were hoping for breakout seasons by the likes of Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman, it's been Victor Scott II and Matthew Liberatore who have shown early signs of breakout seasons in 2025. There were question marks surrounding both players entering the season. After struggling at the major league level and bouncing back and forth between MLB and Triple-A in 2024, Scott had to beat out Michael Siani for a starting spot, and he did so with a stellar spring training campaign. For Scott, his elite speed and defense have not come as a surpirse. He's already tallied 13 stolen bases and accumulated a seven defensive runs saved, which ranks second among NL center fielders. Cardinals center fielder Victor Scott IIJordan Godfree-Imagn Images It's been Scott's bat that has come as a pleasant surprise to start 2025. Through 40 games, the 24-year-old is slashing .278/.342/.383 and has driven in 18 runs. Advertisement As for Liberatore, he spent most of 2024 as a reliever after his first couple tries as a starter at the major league level didn't go well. While the decision to move him back into the rotation this season was frowned upon by some, Liberatore has made the most of his latest opportunity. Simply put, Liberatore has been the Cardinals' ace to start 2025. His 3.11 ERA and 1.01 WHIP are both a best among Cardinals starting pitchers. Through 46 and a third innings pitched, the 25-year-old has struck out 42 hitters while only surrendering seven walks. He is next scheduled to pitch on Monday against the Tigers. 2004: Go now, Libba, if you did it
Vale Robert Walls, a fixture of the VFL/AFL for 50 years and longtime football columnist for The Age. Read the best of his past columns here. See all 9 stories. This opinion piece by The Age's late columnist Robert Walls was first published on April 9, 2004. If Tony Liberatore was responsible for the felling of Matthew Knights 100 metres off the ball at the MCG on Saturday, then he should give the game away. And, if he was responsible and feels the need to soldier on, then his club should do him a favour and insist that he retire. If Liberatore caused the split in Knight's forehead, then it has to be the last straw in a list of unsavoury incidents that have sullied the Brownlow medallist's past few seasons. There has been much to admire about Liberatore's career. He has had to fight the odds to survive, but in recent years it has been sad to see him desperately clinging to a career that he knows is slipping away fast. His coach, Terry Wallace, has kept him on the knife-edge. Perhaps Wallace thinks this is the best way to get some value from Liberatore. But what price do you put on sledging and scraping? If Liberatore split the unsuspecting Knight's head open, then he has become a pathetic figure on our football fields. Knights being split open in the thick of the action is far more acceptable. Being in the contest you expect the whacks to come. But, if he was felled 100 metres away from the contest, then Knights, his wife, his young son and the game itself deserve much better. Even Liberatore's Bulldog teammates must be sick and tired of continually defending him when retaliation occurs. Of course, publicly they would never say so, but in recent years I'm sure Chris Grant, Brad Johnson, Scott West and Rohan Smith would much prefer to be playing the fine football they are capable of rather than be forced to fly the flag for a teammate who too often stirs the pot. If Liberatore did a job on Knights, you can only hope that his conscience forces him to have a real strong think about where he stands in the football world.
