Former Henderson County Colonel heading to Super Regional
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — On Sunday, Liberty Softball took down the number one overall seed in the NCAA tournament to advance to their first Super Regional. On the Flames is Henderson County's JaMaya Byrum who played a big role by scoring the winning run. The former Colonel entered the game in the bottom of the 5th to play shortstop. Eventually walking and scoring on a go-ahead home run by the team's best player. Since the win, Byrum has been overwhelmed with the support form her roots in Henderson. 'Lots of family and friends of course,' said Byrum. 'I have lots of hometown friends that were watching the game — people that I haven't heard from in a while — it was so good to hear from them and sweet to know I have so many people supporting me.' Byrum and the Flames will play Oregon on Friday at 9 p.m. CST in the Supers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Women's College World Series: Liberty softball stuns No. 1 Texas A&M for historic upset
Liberty softball made history on Sunday night in College Station. The Flames knocked off Texas A&M 6-5 in their regional matchup on Sunday, which sent them into the Super Regionals for the first time in program history. That also left the Aggies, who were the top seed in the region and the betting favorite to win the Women's College World Series, on the wrong side of a historic upset. They are now the first No. 1 seed in history to ever fail to make it out of the regionals round since the current format started two decades ago. The Aggies held a 3-1 lead entering the sixth inning of the winner-take-all game on Sunday afternoon, though that's when the Flames erupted. Savannah Jessee hit a two-run homer to left field to tie the game up early in the inning, and then Rachel Roupe followed suit with a three-run shot of her own. That suddenly put LIberty up 6-3. YODER GETS IT DONE!!!!!!!! — Liberty Softball (@LibertySB) May 19, 2025 Texas A&M had to beat Liberty twice on Sunday to make it out of the regional, as it had already fallen to the Flames on Saturday. That sent the Aggies to the elimination bracket, where they beat Marist to set up Sunday's pair of games. The Aggies then took the first game 14-11 in extra innings. Liberty will now take on either Stanford or Oregon next in the Super Regionals. If they win there, the Flames will earn a trip to the Women's College World Series — which starts on May 29 in Oklahoma City.

But an 11-1 run by the Aggies over the next four innings gave them an 11-7 edge heading into the bottom of the seventh. There, Liberty scored three runs in four at-bats to pull within one score, 11-10. With the bases loaded, Liberty senior Alyssa Henault walked up to home plate to face pitcher Kate Munnerlyn. The Texas A&M freshman hit Henault, sending Liberty redshirt junior Savanah Whatley home. Advertisement With the score even at 11, coach Trisha Ford made a pitching change, swapping Munnerlyn for freshman Sydney Lessentine. Lessentine walked into no small task. With the bases loaded and two outs, the pressure was at its peak. The count grew to 3-2, and a flyout by Liberty senior KK Madrey sent the game to extra innings, allowing Aggies fans to finally catch a breath. Texas A&M scored three runs in the top of the eighth, while holding Liberty to three straight outs in the bottom of the eighth, to keep the super regionals hopes alive. 'This team is gritty and we're not going to give up until the very last out,' Texas A&M junior Kennedy Powell said on the broadcast after the game. 'This team is a bunch of dogs. We got one more.' Powell recorded three hits, one run and four RBIs. Star hitter Mya Perez recorded three RBIs en route to breaking the program's single-season RBI record with 73. Record setting RBI No. 73!
