Specialised ICU to ease organ donation crisis
CAPE TOWN - Organ transplantation has been given a major boost through an initiative launched by Stellenbosch University. A specialised intensive care unit, dubbed the LifePod, now ensures that the organs of patients with permanent loss of brain function can remain viable until transplantation. A first of its kind in Africa, the initiative is the brainchild of Save7, a student non-profit organisation.
