Andrea Mitchell Accepts Career Achievement Award at 85th Peabody Awards

NBC News chief Washington and chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell received a Career Achievement Award at the 85th Peabody Awards Sunday. In her remarks, Mitchell reflected on her career and the importance of having 'women at every level' in journalism — women who are 'smarter, stronger, and more fearless than we ever were – and more empowered' than ever before. Mitchell was announced as the award winner in April. The list of past honorees includes Mel Brooks, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, Dan Rather, Cicely Tyson and Carol Burnett. She has been with NBC News for nearly five decades and has spent three of those serving as the netowrk's chief foreign affairs correspondent. She previously won a Peabody Award for her coverage of the Texas abortion ban and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Television Academy at the news and documentary Emmy Awards in 2019. Mitchell's remarks in full are below: 'Winning this award this year along with my NBC colleagues at SNL clearly shows that Peabody recognizes – people need some good laughs along with their news.' 'In all seriousness, this award means the world to me – not just for what it says about my work, but for what it represents about the importance of journalism.' 'It's been a long journey for women in my profession. Consider this: my first job in a Philadelphia newsroom was as a 'copy boy.' That tells you how rare it was for a woman to be in the room at all, even doing an entry level job.' 'There weren't many women role models in television news back then. I had to fight my way in – and then fight for every promotion after that. I've been thrown out of many venues – from Philadelphia's city hall to the state house in Harrisburg, to the oval office – for asking uncomfortable questions – to the campaign trail with what was then famously called by author Timothy Crouse, 'the boys on the bus.' Covering foreign policy, I've even been physically dragged out of rooms for challenging dictators in places like Damascus and Sudan. What I learned over the years is that if you don't keep trying, you'll never get any answers.' 'Women journalists have certainly come a great distance since those early days. When I look across our newsroom now, I see women at every level – as the President and Executive Vice Presidents of NBC News – as our Washington Bureau Chief – women producers, editors, camera crews, researchers and desk assistants. And no, they are no longer called 'copy boys.'' 'I am grateful that many of these terrific journalists worked on my team and have since risen through the ranks to leadership positions. Mentoring the next generations of female journalists has been one of the great joys of my career. And I can tell you, the women journalists of today are smarter, stronger, and more fearless than we ever were – and more empowered.' 'And all of us journalists have to be fearless. It is no exaggeration to say that strong journalism, providing accurate information to the American people, is critical to the survival of our democracy. As Thomas Jefferson wrote to the continental Congress in 1787, 'were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.'' 'Whether it is warning communities about an approaching hurricane or informing them about how their elected leaders are responding to an overseas crisis, the work correspondents, producers and photographers do every day saves lives. Literally.' 'So thank you, Peabody and the University of Georgia, for respecting journalism and recognizing the importance of what we do. Thank you for honoring a former 'copy boy' who has never lost her love of chasing after the next story. Thank you to my wonderful husband for his enduring patience with my erratic work life for all these years – and my eternal gratitude to my NBC family, past and present, for believing in me. This award is for all of them.' The post Andrea Mitchell Accepts Career Achievement Award at 85th Peabody Awards appeared first on TheWrap.

Rod Stewart's American Music Awards Speech Was Censored – Here's What He Actually Said

Sir Rod Stewart certainly kept CBS' censors busy when he was caught off guard during his acceptance speech at this year's American Music Awards. After a two-year absence, the rebooted AMAs took place on Sunday night, with the Maggie May singer being recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony. What Sir Rod wasn't expecting, though, was that he'd be presented with his award by five of his eight children. Struggling to conceal his shock, the Grammy winner told them: 'I'm so fucking overwhelmed that you're here. Jesus Christ!' Fortunately, the ceremony was being aired on a brief time delay, so the Daily Mail reported that US broadcaster CBS was able to make some fast-thinking cuts, to remove the F-bomb from the final edit. However, it remained intact when Sir Rod's speech was uploaded to YouTube: 'I am absolutely flabbergasted, I didn't know they were here, my children,' he began. 'I've got eight altogether… I didn't have a television. That's a little joke. 'But I'm so thrown! I thought you'd recorded [that introduction] earlier! Look at them, ugly, ain't they? All of them!' He continued: 'When I started singing in the early 60s, long before all of you lot were here, the reason I got into it was because I had this burning ambition to sing. That's all I wanted to do, I didn't want to be rich, or famous, and here I am, a few years later, picking up this wonderful award. Thank you so much.' After his speech, Sir Rod also performed a rendition of one of his signature hits, Forever Young. It's not just Sir Rod's Lifetime Achievement win that's putting the crooner in a nostalgic mood, though. Next month, the chart-topping star will be performing in Glastonbury's famous Sunday afternoon 'Legends' slot, where he'll showcase hits from across his decades-spanning career. Rod Stewart drops F-bomb after being blindsided by his children at 2025 American Music Awards

Rod Stewart got the surprise of a lifetime when five of his children made a surprise appearance at the 2025 American Music Awards on Monday to present him with its Lifetime Achievement Award. The 80-year-old singing icon was so shocked to see his family there in person that he dropped an F-bomb that was edited out of the broadcast. 'I'm so f***ing overwhelmed that you're here,' Stewart said lovingly to his kids, according to reporter at the ceremony. However, the version that aired on CBS featured a clumsy cut away from Stewart during his cursing to a bizarre shot of audience members, who were tastelessly holding up their phones to film his speech. Instead of beeping the profanity, CBS appeared to just snip out the offending word, resulting in a jarring return to his speech mid-word. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Stewart said he was 'absolutely flabbergasted' because he had no idea that his children were going to be attending the ceremony, much less giving him a warm introduction. 'I thought you had recorded it earlier!' he said of their introduction. The Maggie May singer also managed to get in a risqué joke that the censors weren't as concerned about. 'I've got eight [kids] all together,' Stewart said, before quickly adding, 'I didn't have a television.' 'That was a little joke,' he said sheepishly to chuckles from the audience. 'When I started singing in the early '60s, well before all of you lot were here, the reason I got into it [was] because I had this burning ambition to sing,' said Stewart, who also listed some of his major singing influences, including Muddy Waters and Sam Cooke. 'It's all I wanted to do. I didn't want to be rich or famous, and here I am a few years later, picking up this wonderful award.' He concluded his brief speech with a performance of his classic tune Forever Young. It was an epic version of the song, featuring a middle section that highlighted his female backing musicians and tap dancers. The Maggie May singer also managed to get in a risqué joke that the censors weren't as concerned about. 'I've got eight [kids] all together,' Stewart said, before quickly adding, 'I didn't have a television' After a brief tap solo, his two fiddle players performed a duet with a marching bass drum accompaniment before reprising Forever Young for the dramatic finale of the AMAs. Joining Stewart at the ceremony were five of his eight children, including Kimberly, 45; Sean, 44; Ruby, 37; Renee, 32; and Liam, 30. Among the children who missed out on the performance was Stewart's oldest child, his 61-year-old daughter Sarah Streeter. In a 2010 interview on The Joy Behar Show, Stewart explained how he and Sarah's mother, his ex-girlfriend Susannah Boffey, weren't in a good position to take care of their child. 'She was put up for adoption when I was 17 or 18, I think,' he recalled. 'I was absolutely stone broke … and so she was put up for adoption.' Although he apparently wasn't a part of her life when she was younger, Stewart said he began to take on a larger role after the death of Sarah's adoptive parents. 'We've tried to come together and be close together, and it's working out pretty well,' he shared. 'I never felt like I was her dad, because I didn't take her to school, change her nappies, there was no paternal thing there, but I'm trying.' Stewart's other two absence children were his two youngest sons, 19-year-old Alistair and 14-year-old Aiden, both of whom he shares with his current wife, Penny Lancaster, whom he married in 2007. The Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? singer's older children Kimberly and Sean are both products of his first marriage to Alana Collins, which lasted from 1979 to 1984. He welcomed his daughter Ruby with his ex-girlfriend Kelly Emberg in 1987, and he shares Renee and Liam with his second wife, the model Rachel Hunter, whom he was married to from 1990 to 2006. The 2025 AMAs aired live on CBS, with Jennifer Lopez hosting. Fans can also stream the awards show on Paramount+ in the US. This year marked the first time the AMAs ceremony was shown on CBS, as it had previously aired on ABC since 1974. This year's event also marked the first time the show aired live since 2022, following a hiatus due to ABC's Grammys contract expiring at the time.
