Lima '25 attracts 450,000 visitors, spurs interest in national defence industry
LANGKAWI: The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25) concluded today, recording an attendance of approximately 450,000 visitors comprising commercial and business representatives, both local and international delegations, as well as members of the public. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this year's edition reaffirmed Lima's position as a continuous platform for the exchange of ideas, the latest technologies, and strategic collaborations vital to the nation. "Despite the uncertain weather, including today's rain, we still saw large crowds rushing into the exhibition halls to witness the technological showcases. "This year saw the participation of 860 exhibitors, a higher number than at Lima '23, comprising 50 per cent local and 50 per cent international companies, which is a commendable achievement," he said in his closing speech at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) today. Over the course of five days, Mohamed Khaled said Lima '25 also recorded 1,400 business-to-business (B2B) meetings and 920 business-to-government (B2G) sessions. He said these achievements reflect a positive outlook for the development and future of the national defence industry, and position it as a key driver in reducing the country's reliance on external parties. Apart from commercial elements and business transactions, the defence minister said Lima '25 also enhanced its appeal with a notable increase in the number of static asset exhibitions compared to previous editions. Notably, for the first time, Lima '25 featured a high-immersion dome experience, known as the A.T.M.O.S Sphere, which stands for Aerospace, Technology, Maritime, and Operations for Sustainability. "This gives us a glimpse into how much more there is to discover in the world. If we aspire to become a successful nation, we must embrace a culture of continuous learning and exploration," he added. The A.T.M.O.S Sphere is a cutting-edge exhibition utilising 360-degree technology and audiovisual immersion to reflect Malaysia's aspirations to lead in land, sea, air and space innovation. Lima '25 was organised by the Defence Ministry in collaboration with Global Exhibitions and Conferences Sdn Bhd (GEC), and placed emphasis on innovation and enhancing industry competitiveness in line with current technological trends. Since its inception in 1991, the exhibition has remained the largest event of its kind in Southeast Asia's maritime and aerospace sectors.

‘Lima ‘25 must be springboard for local firms'
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the upcoming Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25) must serve as a strategic springboard for local companies, particularly SMEs to break into global markets through innovation. His senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said Anwar is scheduled to attend Lima '25 following his official visit to Russia from May 13 to 16. 'Anwar has emphasised that Lima '25 is not merely a showcase of defence and aviation hardware, but a collaborative platform uniting governments, industry leaders and academic institutions,' Tunku Nashrul said during the Prime Minister's Office daily briefing yesterday. He said the event would spotlight key sectors such as defence, commercial aviation, the Internet of Things, satellite systems, space technology and other emerging industries. 'Lima '25 underscores Malaysia's ambition to position itself as a regional and global hub for maritime and aerospace innovation. 'It is also expected to spur economic growth by drawing foreign direct investment, boosting tourism and enhancing international trade. 'The prime minister has expressed confidence in the ongoing preparations, and extended a warm welcome to exhibitors, investors and visitors from Malaysia and abroad. He hopes this edition will rank among the most impactful in the event's history.' First launched in 1991, Lima is held biennially and remains one of Southeast Asia's premier maritime and aerospace showcases. The 2025 edition, themed 'Innovate Today, Thrive Tomorrow,' is set to run from May 20 to 24. To date, 102 aircraft and 35 naval vessels have confirmed participation. Of these, 64 aircraft will take part in aerial demonstrations while the remainder will be on static display. Around 10,000 public tickets have already been sold, with exhibitors from China, France, the United Kingdom, Australia and Italy confirmed. Lima '25 builds on the success of its predecessor Lima '23, the largest edition in the event's history, which featured over 600 companies from 30 countries. A key highlight of Lima '23 was the signing of 43 letters of acceptance and intent, along with eight MoU by the Defence Ministry, amounting to RM10.128 billion.

40,000 ferry tickets sold ahead of Lima '25
KUALA KEDAH: More than 40,000 ferry tickets have been sold ahead of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25), prompting ferry operators to ramp up services to meet the surging demand. Ferry Line Ventures Sdn Bhd, which manages passenger services to the island, has scheduled an additional 100 trips between May 20 and 25, covering the event period and the day after its conclusion. Its operations manager Norhafiz Abdul Wahid said the move was necessary to ensure a smooth flow of passengers between Kuala Kedah, Kuala Perlis and Langkawi, which is expecting an influx of local and international visitors. "This is a healthy development. We've seen strong interest, with about 40,000 tickets sold for the five-day period," he said at a press conference at the Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal today. He said approximately 10,000 return tickets are still available, and that ferry operations may be extended further if demand keeps rising. Currently, ferries are scheduled to run hourly, with real-time updates and seat availability provided through the Cuti-Cuti Langkawi app. "If the demand is encouraging, we will extend operating hours up to midnight for services between Kuala Perlis and Langkawi," he said. Services from Kuala Kedah will end at 10pm due to ongoing dredging works at the estuary. Norhafiz assured that all safety protocols are in place, including life jackets and navigation lights, in compliance with Marine Department regulations. "We also have standby vessels ready to take over in case of technical issues. "All maintenance was done during the low season to ensure reliability throughout this period. "Our current system ensures only one ferry docks at a time, with another ready to enter once passengers are unloaded," he said. He advised travellers to expect congestion at the Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis jetties and urged early bookings to minimise inconvenience. Lima '25, themed "Today's Progress, Future Achievements", is expected to surpass previous editions in asset sales value. Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin briefed the Cabinet on the exhibition's strong momentum. So far, 10,000 public tickets have been sold, with exhibitors from China, France, the UK, Australia and Italy already confirmed. The previous edition, Lima '23 featured over 600 companies from 30 countries, the biggest since its inception in 1991.
