Lima'25 a resounding success with RM11 billion in deals

PETALING JAYA: The 17th edition of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima'25) concluded on a high note with RM11 billion in transactions signed over five dynamic days. Co-organised by the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) and Global Exhibitions & Conferences Sdn Bhd (GEC), Lima'25 lived up to its theme, 'Innovate Today, Thrive Tomorrow', by setting new benchmarks in participation, innovation and impact. This year's event held from May 20-24 welcomed more than 860 companies from 24 countries, featured 15 country pavilions and hosted dignitaries from 64 nations, making it the most internationally represented edition in Lima's history. With 43 aircraft and 31 ships from both local and foreign countries, alongside an expanded programme across four exhibition halls and interactive themed zones, the exhibition drew tens of thousands of trade and public visitors. GEC managing director Abd Hafiz Abu Bakar said: 'Success is built on strong pillars – hard work, innovation, learning, and unity. By bringing these elements together at Lima'25, we created a platform where progress is possible and opportunities are open to all.' In congratulating Mindef and GEC for successfully organising the event, Kedah State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Salleh Saidin said Lima'25 has delivered far-reaching economic and social benefits for Langkawi and greater Kedah, contributing positively to their goals for Visit Kedah Year 2025. 'It has brought the world to our doorstep, creating invaluable exposure and business opportunities for our local SMEs. The spillover effects extend across key sectors – tourism, hospitality, logistics and services – enabling us to unlock the full potential of Kedah's vibrant economy. I am happy to say that restaurants and eateries were always full on a daily basis, and almost all establishments in Langkawi benefitted from Lima'25, directly or indirectly,' he added. Mohd Salleh expressed confidence that events of this calibre will continue to position Kedah as a globally competitive destination, while driving sustainable growth and inclusive development for the people. *I hope to see the next edition of Lima continue to catalyse opportunities for growth, innovation and global engagement for Kedah and beyond,' he said. At Lima'25, numerous strategic collaborations were forged between local and international players through memorandums of understanding, letters of intent and contracts, contributing to a total transaction value of RM11 billion. A total of 1,400 business-to-business and 920 business-to-government meetings were facilitated, and nine conferences and two industrial competitions were organised. These outcomes affirm LLima's status as a catalyst for innovation, cross-border collaboration, and inclusive industrial development. The 18th edition of Lima is tentatively scheduled for 2027, with Mindef and GEC calling on all stakeholders to continue building on the momentum of this landmark event.

Malaysia to continue leading role in regional diplomacy, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will remain steadfast in the face of global challenges and continue to play its role as the catalyst and leader of regional diplomacy through the Asean 2025 Chairmanship, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said the country is firmly anchored amid challenges such as geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs. "Malaysia is among the earliest countries to act in protecting the interests of industry and businesses and the welfare of the people. "Comprehensive and inclusive strategic measures have been taken, with the involvement of various parties to ensure the country remains economically stable and competitive," he said in his congratulatory speech in conjunction with the official birthday of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, here on Monday (June 2). His Majesty also presented federal awards, medals and honours to recipients at the 2025 Investiture Ceremony held to commemorate the occasion. Also in attendance was Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia. The Prime Minister described the recent 46th Asean Summit as the best in the grouping's history, where Malaysia as the Chairman successfully brought together member nations as well as China and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. "The Asean Summit and the organisation of Lima'25 (Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition) prove that teamwork is the key to our efforts to make the nation's aspirations and ambitions a reality. "The excellence of the Malaysian Armed Forces in Langkawi as well as the greatness of the PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) and the entire government and private machinery in Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur are impressive," said the Prime Minister. He also expressed confidence that Visit Malaysia Year 2026 would be a catalyst for economic growth and to increase job opportunities. In addition, Anwar said increasing agricultural yields and local products, Malaysian-made goods and the resilience of the domestic industry continue to be pillars that strengthen the country's economy. "The people's unwavering support for these initiatives shows high national spirit and awareness of the importance of self-reliance amid the uncertain global situation," he said.

Defence Ministry aims to further enhance Lima's prestige

LANGKAWI: The Defence Ministry will continue enhancing the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) to position it as a prestigious biennial event for the nation. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin expressed satisfaction with this year's edition, noting that it had garnered praise and positive feedback from international participants. "They commended the organisation of the 17th edition of Lima, observing that Lima 2025 was better coordinated, more efficient and well-structured. They also appreciated receiving earlier, clearer, and more organised information," he said in his closing speech at Lima '25 here today. He said Lima is more than just an exhibition of defence assets, it carries broader and deeper significance. "Lima is a platform that fosters national pride and serves as a symbol of Malaysia's capability to host an international-class exhibition," he added. Beyond that, he said Lima is an important avenue for the government and the nation to remain abreast of developments in the defence sector, which in turn contributes to enhancing national defence preparedness. "Lima is also an opportunity for public engagement. When people attend and witness the exhibitions, it nurtures a sense of appreciation, support and understanding, that the freedom, peace and security we enjoy today are the result of the unwavering commitment of our armed forces and security personnel," he said. Khaled also highlighted Lima as a valuable platform to showcase the importance and progress of defence technology. "Lima also serves as a tool for defence diplomacy, providing opportunities for engagement with other nations and friendly countries seeking closer, more meaningful relations with us," he said. Concluding his address, Khaled expressed his appreciation to all parties involved in making this year's edition a success, particularly for ensuring that the event ran smoothly and achieved its intended objectives.

Lima '25 attracts 450,000 visitors, spurs interest in national defence industry

LANGKAWI: The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25) concluded today, recording an attendance of approximately 450,000 visitors comprising commercial and business representatives, both local and international delegations, as well as members of the public. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this year's edition reaffirmed Lima's position as a continuous platform for the exchange of ideas, the latest technologies, and strategic collaborations vital to the nation. "Despite the uncertain weather, including today's rain, we still saw large crowds rushing into the exhibition halls to witness the technological showcases. "This year saw the participation of 860 exhibitors, a higher number than at Lima '23, comprising 50 per cent local and 50 per cent international companies, which is a commendable achievement," he said in his closing speech at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) today. Over the course of five days, Mohamed Khaled said Lima '25 also recorded 1,400 business-to-business (B2B) meetings and 920 business-to-government (B2G) sessions. He said these achievements reflect a positive outlook for the development and future of the national defence industry, and position it as a key driver in reducing the country's reliance on external parties. Apart from commercial elements and business transactions, the defence minister said Lima '25 also enhanced its appeal with a notable increase in the number of static asset exhibitions compared to previous editions. Notably, for the first time, Lima '25 featured a high-immersion dome experience, known as the A.T.M.O.S Sphere, which stands for Aerospace, Technology, Maritime, and Operations for Sustainability. "This gives us a glimpse into how much more there is to discover in the world. If we aspire to become a successful nation, we must embrace a culture of continuous learning and exploration," he added. The A.T.M.O.S Sphere is a cutting-edge exhibition utilising 360-degree technology and audiovisual immersion to reflect Malaysia's aspirations to lead in land, sea, air and space innovation. Lima '25 was organised by the Defence Ministry in collaboration with Global Exhibitions and Conferences Sdn Bhd (GEC), and placed emphasis on innovation and enhancing industry competitiveness in line with current technological trends. Since its inception in 1991, the exhibition has remained the largest event of its kind in Southeast Asia's maritime and aerospace sectors.

More than a badge: How embroidered patches steal the show at Lima '25

LANGKAWI: As the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima '25) drew to a close under a gentle rain shower, one humble item quietly captured the imagination of enthusiasts and casual visitors alike - the embroidered patch. Often overshadowed by high-tech aircraft and military hardware, these stitched insignias, proudly worn on flight suits and jackets, emerged as a cultural phenomenon at Lima '25, drawing admiration, sparking conversations, and even inspiring collectors. Lieutenant Faez Zulafiqar, a ground crew member with the Royal Malaysian Air Force's F/A-18D Hornet squadron, said patches are more than just decorative items, they symbolise participation, commitment and shared memories. "Each time we take part in an exercise, we usually produce a special patch for that mission. "This time round, we created a limited-edition patch that reflects our squadron's commitment to this deployment. It's something we're proud of, it shows we were part of it." He added that the tradition extends well beyond Malaysia, noting international exercises such as Pitch Black in Australia last year. "There was a 2024 edition patch for that too. These patches become keepsakes, mementoes of where we've been and what we've done," he said. For Mohamad Anas Elyas, a firefighter with the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department, the patches carry deep personal meaning. Anas, fondly known as 'Tok Anas' among state fire department personnel, said patches represent milestones throughout his 11-year journey in the uniformed service. "Patches aren't just decorations or labels, they represent identity, experience and memories throughout my journey in this community." He also said that patch exchanges, a quiet tradition among service personnel, are more than friendly gestures, as each patch carries its own story. "Every patch I've exchanged has a story behind it. So far, I've swapped patches with several friends from different services. It's a way of building connection and recognising each other's roles," he said.
