More than a badge: How embroidered patches steal the show at Lima '25

LANGKAWI: As the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima '25) drew to a close under a gentle rain shower, one humble item quietly captured the imagination of enthusiasts and casual visitors alike - the embroidered patch.
Often overshadowed by high-tech aircraft and military hardware, these stitched insignias, proudly worn on flight suits and jackets, emerged as a cultural phenomenon at Lima '25, drawing admiration, sparking conversations, and even inspiring collectors.
Lieutenant Faez Zulafiqar, a ground crew member with the Royal Malaysian Air Force's F/A-18D Hornet squadron, said patches are more than just decorative items, they symbolise participation, commitment and shared memories.
"Each time we take part in an exercise, we usually produce a special patch for that mission.
"This time round, we created a limited-edition patch that reflects our squadron's commitment to this deployment. It's something we're proud of, it shows we were part of it."
He added that the tradition extends well beyond Malaysia, noting international exercises such as Pitch Black in Australia last year.
"There was a 2024 edition patch for that too. These patches become keepsakes, mementoes of where we've been and what we've done," he said.
For Mohamad Anas Elyas, a firefighter with the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department, the patches carry deep personal meaning.
Anas, fondly known as 'Tok Anas' among state fire department personnel, said patches represent milestones throughout his 11-year journey in the uniformed service.
"Patches aren't just decorations or labels, they represent identity, experience and memories throughout my journey in this community."
He also said that patch exchanges, a quiet tradition among service personnel, are more than friendly gestures, as each patch carries its own story.
"Every patch I've exchanged has a story behind it. So far, I've swapped patches with several friends from different services. It's a way of building connection and recognising each other's roles," he said.

PLKN 3.0: NS trainees thrilled to get to fire M16 using real ammo

KUANTAN: A total of 123 trainees in the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 Series 2/2025 were seen to be excited with the opportunity to undergo a shooting exercise with real guns like the M16 at the Naval Region Headquarters (MAWILLA) 1 Target Range in Tanjung Gelang here on Wednesday (June 4). National Service Training Department Training Operations Division director, Royal Malaysian Air Force Colonel Mazlizan Shaikh Osman ( pic, centre ), said the number was part of the 257 male trainees who participated in the 45-day programme at the 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan. "We are holding two shooting sessions, today (June 4) with the Alpha and Bravo companies and tomorrow (June 5) with the Charlie and Delta companies. "This training is part of the 70% of military elements applied in the PLKN, apart from shooting practice, we also train them in navigation, survival skills and crossing obstacle courses," he said at a press conference here on Wednesday. Mazlizan also said that female trainees stationed at the 515th Territorial Army Regiment (Askar Wataniah) Camp in Kuala Lumpur would also undergo shooting training and the same basic military module to build discipline, confidence and identity of the young generation as the country's frontliners. "We are holding training like this because, based on past studies, many trainees want to train outdoors, and if they are in other locations, they do not have the opportunity to use real weapons. "The weapon used in the training is the M16 rifle (standard US military rifle) with live ammunition, where the trainees are trained to shoot at a distance of 25m and 100m in prone, sitting and standing positions," he said. He said that before practising at the target range, trainees were first provided with knowledge related to weapons, as well as protocols that were allowed and prohibited when handling weapons, to ensure the safety of all present during a drill. A trainee, Aiman Khawarizmi Kamaruddin, 20, from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, admitted that he really enjoyed the shooting exercise because it gave him new knowledge and experience. "This shooting experience is very valuable to me and my friends and gives us exposure on the knowledge of using real weapons," he said. – Bernama

Teoh Beng Hock's sister demands accountability

KUALA LUMPUR: The sister of Teoh Beng Hock has demanded transparency and accountability from the authorities after the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) and police decided not to pursue further action in the 2009 case. Beng Hock's sister, Lee Lan expressed her dismay over the decision for no further action (NFA), especially given that multiple court rulings had established the death was not due to suicide or an accident. She said that the Court of Appeal had ruled in 2014 that Teoh's death was caused by the actions of individuals, including Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers, and demanded that the police investigate the case under the proper criminal provisions. "The recent police investigation of the case was under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement, instead of provisions appropriate for a homicide case. "The post-mortem revealed serious neck injuries, yet no one has been held is a clear case of homicide," she said at a solidarity event for her brother. She also called for those currently in the government to act appropriately as they had in the past stood by the fact that he was killed. "Those in government now, had in the past stood by the fact that Beng Hock was killed. "Why now NFA? It's a slap on their face (on what they have stood for)," she said. Last month, Beng Hock's family was informed by police that their latest investigation into the case had been classified as requiring no further action or NFA. On Nov 21 last year, the High Court had directed the police to complete their long-delayed investigation into the death more than 15 years ago. Beng Hock died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest was held and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that his death was caused by "one or more persons unknown", including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Prior to 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor. Meanwhile, Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody Together (Edict) chairman M. Visvanathan, said he would be able to solve the case within 21 days if he were appointed as a special prosecutor. Speaking at the same event, he called for the A-GC to appoint him as an ad hoc prosecutor to oversee the case involving Beng Hock's death. This, he said as three doctors had confirmed that Beng Hock had injuries to his neck which occurred prior to his fall from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam. "I propose to the AG, prime minister and home ministry, make me the ad hoc prosecutor. I will solve this case within 21 days of my appointment," he said.

Dr M was present at meeting that granted Anwar's pardon - A-GC

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) has reminded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that he was present at the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) meeting which decided to grant Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim a royal pardon in 2018. In a statement today, the A-GC said the 51st meeting of the FTPB was convened at Istana Negara on May 16, 2018, and was chaired by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA) Sultan Muhammad V. "Among those present was Dr Mahathir, who was the prime minister at the time," it said. The reminder comes following a viral video in which Dr Mahathir claimed that the royal pardon granted to Anwar was invalid as it had not gone through the proper FTPB process. The A-GC stressed that the board had, in fact, met and deliberated on the matter, and that the then YDPA had consented to Anwar's immediate release based on the board's advice. It also said the attorney-general had provided a written legal opinion in line with Clause 9, Article 42 of the Federal Constitution for the board's consideration. The A-GC said it views the matter seriously, as it touches on constitutional and institutional integrity.
