More than a badge: How embroidered patches steal the show at Lima '25
LANGKAWI: As the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima '25) drew to a close under a gentle rain shower, one humble item quietly captured the imagination of enthusiasts and casual visitors alike - the embroidered patch. Often overshadowed by high-tech aircraft and military hardware, these stitched insignias, proudly worn on flight suits and jackets, emerged as a cultural phenomenon at Lima '25, drawing admiration, sparking conversations, and even inspiring collectors. Lieutenant Faez Zulafiqar, a ground crew member with the Royal Malaysian Air Force's F/A-18D Hornet squadron, said patches are more than just decorative items, they symbolise participation, commitment and shared memories. "Each time we take part in an exercise, we usually produce a special patch for that mission. "This time round, we created a limited-edition patch that reflects our squadron's commitment to this deployment. It's something we're proud of, it shows we were part of it." He added that the tradition extends well beyond Malaysia, noting international exercises such as Pitch Black in Australia last year. "There was a 2024 edition patch for that too. These patches become keepsakes, mementoes of where we've been and what we've done," he said. For Mohamad Anas Elyas, a firefighter with the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department, the patches carry deep personal meaning. Anas, fondly known as 'Tok Anas' among state fire department personnel, said patches represent milestones throughout his 11-year journey in the uniformed service. "Patches aren't just decorations or labels, they represent identity, experience and memories throughout my journey in this community." He also said that patch exchanges, a quiet tradition among service personnel, are more than friendly gestures, as each patch carries its own story. "Every patch I've exchanged has a story behind it. So far, I've swapped patches with several friends from different services. It's a way of building connection and recognising each other's roles," he said.
