Over €30k raised for 'kind-hearted' eight-year-old girl battling rare cancer

Communities around Ireland have come together to raise more than than €30,000 in aid of a young girl from Co Limerick who is battling a rare form of blood cancer. Eighth-year-old Amelia Murphy was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in June, soon after she had completed first class at Monaleen National School. According to her family, Amelia is known for her sunny personality and love of learning, while she's also a talented Irish dancer who proudly took part in her very first feis this year. The youngster is now undergoing an intensive treatment plan at Crumlin Children's Hospital, which requires frequent travel, extended hospital stays, and major life adjustments. Amelia's parents, Brendan and Caroline, have had to step back from work in order to care for their daughter and support her treatment. Amelia with her dad Brendan and brother Cillian Their friends have now set up a GoFundMe page in a bid to support the family as they navigate this difficult time and "so that the Murphys can focus entirely on what matters most — helping Amelia get better." A message shared by the fundraiser's organisers on the GoFundMe page states: "We are fundraising in support of 8-year-old Amelia Murphy, a bright, kind-hearted, and spirited little girl from our local community who has recently been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). "Amelia is the beloved daughter of Brendan and Caroline Murphy, who have been active and valued members of the Annacotty and Castletroy community for over 20 years. "Caroline and her mother Eileen are well known among Irish music fans and rarely miss a Nathan Carter concert. Brendan is a familiar face to many through his work and community involvement, and both parents have always been the first to support local events, schools, and clubs. "The Murphy family are passionate Limerick GAA supporters — they've cheered on the boys in green through thick and thin, and now we have a chance to cheer for them. "The financial impact is growing, with the cost of travel, accommodation, and time away from work placing a heavy burden on the family. Amelia with her mum Caroline "We have set up this GoFundMe to help ease that strain so that the Murphys can focus entirely on what matters most — helping Amelia get better. "Every donation, big or small, will make a meaningful difference. Your kindness and generosity will help this much-loved local family through the most challenging time of their lives. "Let's rally together and show the Murphys the same unwavering support they've always shown our community." The GoFundMe page has raised more than €30,900 from over 500 donations after being set up at the weekend. If you would like to make a donation you can visit the page here. Keith, a social care worker, proposed on Ballycotton Cliff Walk, Cork, on January 21, 2023. 'I didn't want to go on the walk that day — I had new runners on, I didn't want to dirty them, and the weather wasn't great. Keith was behind me, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee,' says Kristine. Kristine Reidy. Limerick GAA reschedule club games after reaching Tailteann Cup final

Limerick GAA have moved quickly to reschedule all grades of their club football championship, following Sunday's win in the Tailteann Cup semi-final. This has left dual clubs with prospect of 10 games in just 11 weekends. Initially pencilled in for the week ending June 22nd, all games were pushed back a week when Jimmy Lee's side negotiated Wexford in the quarter final. This has moved again, after a fifth Tailteann Cup victory in a row on Sunday. The original plan was to have played three rounds of the six grades by mid-July. However, a meeting of the CCCC on Monday within the county has confirmed that the opening round will take place on or before July 20th, with some inter-county squad members set to be in action within five or six days of the 12th of July meeting with Kildare. A decision not to alter the hurling championships, of which there are seven grades, means that rounds two and three of the football competitions will likely take place in August and September. There will be a scramble to make the Munster Championship dates in early November, with dual clubs facing into 10 group games, as well as potentially three knockout rounds. Limerick has successfully filled all their spots in the Munster Championships through the years, with other counties having missed deadlines preciously. Most grades now contain 12 teams, with two groups of six teams. The Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship has tested fixture makers with its eight-team championship, with each side meeting across seven rounds. Granagh Ballingarry, for example, who play at this grade, could face 12 games in as many weekends, while other clubs in this competition will entertain similar challenges with their sister football clubs. Meanwhile, ahead of that historic Tailteann Cup decider with the Lilywhites, the Shannonsiders will be hopeful of a fully fit trio. Iain Corbett (illness), James Naughton (ankle) and Emmet Rigter (hamstring) were all called ashore earlier than planned last Sunday but will be assessed in the coming days. The return to action for vice-captain Barry Coleman proved vital to overturning the deficit against Wicklow.

JP McManus consoles Limerick players on pitch following shock Dublin loss

Limerick billionaire JP McManus was on the field of play as he met some of the dejected players following their shock All-Ireland quarter-final loss. Still All-Ireland favourites coming into the game, it looked like it would be a walk in the park for Limerick, with Dublin's captain Chris Crummey sent off in the opening 15 minutes. From there, Dublin battled to produce possibly the greatest shock in hurling history to win the quarter-final clash by three points and punch their ticket to the All-Ireland semi-final. McManus, who has been a long-time supporter of Limerick GAA, joined the players on the pitch afterwards as they licked their wounds after a loss and it is the first time since 2018 that Limerick will not compete in the All-Ireland semi-finals. "Losing is losing on my side, I can tell you," Limerick boss John Kiely said after the match. "It all hurts and it will hurt as much as it did last year. We wanted our season to continue, we wanted to be back in training next week and it's over now, that's it. "And that's sport, that's the competition. It's disappointing but it's the reality, we wish Dublin the very best of luck as they go forward now. That's it, we're done. "Dublin deserve great credit for their performance, to win that game with 14 men for such a long period of time is a fantastic achievement for them. "Things stuck for them today, when they went to catch a ball, it stuck, they were really good on restarts, ours and theirs, breaking ball was a real strength of theirs today, they were really, really good on the breaking ball. "And whenever they got the chance to go for goals, they were very accurate and they gave themselves a chance to win the game. When the opportunity to win the game came in the last 10 minutes, they seized those opportunities."

Limerick win 'one of the best days Dublin have had'

Dublin forward Cian O'Sullivan said their shock 2-24 to 0-28 All-Ireland quarter-final win against Limerick is "up there with one of the best days we've ever had as a group".Despite playing the majority of the game with 14 men after captain Chris Crummey's 15th-minute red card, the Dubs recorded a famous win as they reached the All-Ireland semi-finals for the first time since 2013.O'Sullivan, who scored Dublin's second goal, praised his side's dogged display in their victory."Credit to the lads, 14 men for 55 minutes what more could you ask for, never mind beating Limerick the best team down through the last 10 years," he told BBC Sport NI."Out there it felt like the final whistle couldn't have come soon enough, they got a chance towards the end and had a pop at goal, but we kept it out. We kept them at arm's length, and everyone left it out there."Dubs boss Niall O Ceallachain added that he "knew" his side were capable of causing an upset against Limerick, something they will look to do again in the last four against Cork on 5 July, which can be watched live on the BBC. "We probably felt we weren't as far off this as the outside noise thought we were," he said."There isn't the level of respect to Dublin hurling which should be given at times, but we haven't earned that so days like today are really important." Whilst it was a glorious day for Dublin, it was another disappointing afternoon for Limerick, whose Munster reign was ended by Cork earlier this boss John Kiely admitted his side simply failed to get going at Croke Park, despite their numerical advantage."I think in every department you have to say Dublin had the edge on us, they were just sharper on the breaking ball, better on their own restarts, better on our restarts and better in front of goal," he admitted. "Everything was sticking and there's no reason I can put my finger on; you have to say hats off to Dublin they played very well and deserved to win the match."For us it's disappointing our season ends like this, but we have to accept this, we were beaten by a better team."
