Vice Media Acquires ‘McMafia' Producer Cuba Pictures From UTA's Curtis Brown

EXCLUSIVE: Vice Media has bought Cuba Pictures from UTA-owned literary and talent agency Curtis Brown. Cuba is one of the UK's most established drama producers. The London-based outfit's series include McMafia, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and the Andrew Garfield movie Boy A. It has just finished shooting The Walsh Sisters in Dublin, the much-anticipated adaptation of the Marian Keyes novels, for RTE and the BBC. It also recently wrapped on The Rumour for Paramount's Channel 5 and starring Joanne Whalley. More from Deadline WME Music Agents Zach Iser & Caroline Yim Join UTA As Partners UTA Signs 'East Of Wall' Filmmaker Kate Beecroft Rebel Wilson Signs With UTA Cuba is run by Dixie Linder and founder Nick Marston, who is also Chairman of Curtis Brown's Television, Film and Theatre Department. Word is that Linder will continue to lead the company with Marston also remaining involved. Deadline understands that Cuba will become part of Vice Studios, which is run by Jamie Hall in London and Danny Gabai in Los Angeles. The label will sit alongside Gangs of London producer Pulse in the Vice Studios fold. Financial terms of the deal are not known. 'Dixie and the team at Cuba Pictures have an exceptional track record in the scripted space,' said Hall. 'Together we will produce incredibly compelling scripted content and extend Vice Studios' global reach.' Marston said that Cuba Pictures has always had 'a fierce intelligence and an independent spirit, with some great clients of Curtis Brown at the heart of the creative process,' adding: 'I am sure that Vice Studios will continue this tradition, and I look forward to fruitful collaborations in the future.' Curtis Brown, which was bought by UTA in 2022, and Cuba have close creative ties, which will remain, said CEO Jonny Geller: 'We will be continuing to work with our friends at Cuba who have brought so many of our clients' projects to the screen.' Linder welcomed the deal to join Vice Studios. 'Their passion and vision make them the perfect partners for this journey, and I can't wait to see what we create together—while continuing our very special relationship with Curtis Brown.' Vice went on a rollercoaster corporate ride, evolving from noisy outsider to part of the media establishment, to bankruptcy. Now, under its new ownership of Fortress Investment Group, Soros Capital Management, and Monroe Capital, it has pared back and restructured and has moved in deal-making mode in recent months. In February, Vice Studios cut a distribution agreement with ITV Studios. In March, Vice acquired LA-based music video and commercials outfit London Alley Entertainment. 'We are impressed by the innovative shows that Cuba Pictures produces with global appeal, and this acquisition accelerates our Studios' growth strategy in scripted content,' said Bruce Dixon, CEO of Vice Media. 'This is the latest example of Vice's momentum and successful turnaround.' The importance of protecting native North Alabama plants

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — For many people, an isolated patch of field may not seem like much. But for some, it is a patch of field full of life that is worth protecting. For Earth Day, News 19 spoke with the Wild Ones North Alabama Chapter to discuss the importance of protecting native plant species. Wild Ones is a national organization that is focused on educating the public about native plant species across the country. The North Alabama Chapter was formed in the past couple of years, with its focus on native plants and ecosystems in the Yellowhammer State. Lauren Linder, North Alabama Chapter board member, has been with the organization since October 2024. She said that the field of gardening has been historically focused on plants that are not native to the United States. 'What that means is almost every lawn, manicured area that you see, like outside of a store or something, that almost all of those are going to be non-native species,' Linder said. She said that because these plants are not from the areas where they are being planted, they don't have the same insects or herbivores to keep them in control, which leads to them growing outside of where they're supposed to and becoming out of control. A few examples of these invasive plants are: Mahonia Privet Liriope English Ivy Japanese Honeysuckle Tree of Heaven Bush Honeysuckle Silktree Asian Bamboo Bradford Pear Creeping Euonymous Vinca These plants are known as the Dirty Dozen and have been sold for decades in nurseries and other gardening facilities. Linder said the reason for the popularity of these plants is that bugs don't eat them, which causes the spread of these plants, pushing out the native ones that support the food web and ecosystem. 'You know, a lot of people will say, 'Well, I've never seen it spread in my yard,' but yeah, you might not see it there. But like, if they have berries, the birds are eating those, flying off and then pooping them out somewhere,' Linder said. The Alabama Invasive Plant Council published a full list of invasive plants across the state. To see the full list, click here. According to Linder, there can be a mix-up in defining what an invasive plant is. She said that generally, a native plant is one that evolved in North America before the arrival of the Europeans, and that a non-native plant is one that was brought over from other parts of the world. However, Linder said that these definitions are very region-based, and that a plant from California could be considered non-native and invasive in North Alabama. Additionally, she said that terms such as invasive and aggressive can also get mixed up. Linder said that an invasive plant cannot be from the area it's growing in and spread aggressively, and that a native plant can be aggressive but not invasive. Some examples of plants that are native to North Alabama are: Black-eyed Susan Cone Flower Gayfeather Beardtounge Dogwood Milkweed To see a full list of native plants in your county, you can visit the Alabama Plant Atlas. Linder said that the popularity of plants that are not from North Alabama can make it challenging to find ones that are. 'There's a really huge variety, and it's really cool, but because the gardening world has become so dominated by these species that aren't from here, it can be a little difficult to find native plants, but there's been a really big growth and interest in it,' Linder said. While there isn't a comprehensive list of native alternatives for Alabama, the Tennessee Exotic Pest Plant Council published a guide that could be used as a baseline for Alabamians looking to plant native. There are also certain insects called 'specialists' that rely on specific native plants to flourish. An example of a specialist is a monarch butterfly. Linder said that most people will plant a butterfly bush and think that is all they need to do. However, she said that while butterflies can rely on those for food, caterpillars can't. The caterpillars need a plant such as milkweed for food, otherwise, they die, leaving no new butterflies to be born. Linder said there are not many protections for these plants in Alabama. 'It's such a fight because these areas don't look like what our traditional gardens look like, and so people don't recognize the worth that is there and the kinds of things we won't be able to get back,' Linder said. Truck driver gets 30 days for crash that killed Garden City teen

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — A Garden City man will spend 30 days in jail for a crash that killed 16-year-old Cassandra 'Cassy' Linder of Garden City. Investigators say Craig Potts was driving a semi, hauling a milk trailer, eastbound on U.S. Highway 50 when he crossed the center line and crashed with a westbound Fiat 500 on March 13, 2023. Linder, who was driving the Fiat, was fatally injured and died at the hospital. Potts was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter or the alternative of vehicular homicide. He was also charged with failure to drive on the right side of the roadway and two counts of failing to obey motor carriers' safety regulations regarding seat belts and driving while ill or fatigued. USPS changes begin Tuesday: How could your mail be affected At a plea hearing Tuesday, the Finney County Attorney says Potts pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide. 'It was determined the most likely outcome of a trial was conviction to the alternative charge of vehicular homicide,' County Attorney Susan Richmeier said in a news release. 'The Finney County Attorney's Office recognizes there is considerable information and evidence which is not open and available to the public. All facts and circumstances were meticulously reviewed when determining the outcome of this case.' Judge Rebecca Faurot gave Potts a suspended 12-month sentence and supervised probation for 18 months. Potts must serve 30 days in jail as a condition of the probation. He must also surrender his commercial driver's license. Richmeier said the sentence corresponds to the charge. 'Tremendous time and effort are put forth on behalf of victims and achieving justice according to the law as written within the State of Kansas,' she said. 'This office extends their heartfelt sympathy to the Linder family, friends and loved ones and we acknowledge the toll this case has had on our community.' The judge said an ongoing civil suit will determine any restitution in the case. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
