Man hit with RM2,500 fine for buying illegal lottery ticket in Kuching
File photo shows the Kuching Court Complex. — Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING (Aug 11): A 22-year-old man was fined RM2,500, in default three months' imprisonment, by the Magistrates' Court here today for purchasing an illegal lottery ticket. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan imposed the sentence on Ally Peterson Peter Chong after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953. The section provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both, upon conviction. The offence was committed at an electronics store in Jalan Belatok here, on June 15, 2025, at around 1pm. According to the facts of the case, during Op Dadu, a police team inspected the accused, who was behind the counter at the time, on suspicion of involvement in illegal gambling activities. They found elements of illegal gambling on the accused's mobile phone, and subsequently arrested the accused. The police also seized a Nokia mobile phone, a piece of paper with handwritten numbers believed to be unlicensed lottery numbers, and RM47 in cash. An analysis by a gambling expert confirmed that the Nokia phone contained elements of illegal gambling. The accused was thus found to have committed an offence punishable under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953. Deputy Public Prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented.

Kuching contractor jailed 9 months for punching wife

KUCHING (Aug 7): A contractor who punched his wife in the head, neck, and eye three years ago was sentenced to nine months in jail by the Magistrates' Court here today. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan ordered for Chan Hua Boo, 57, to begin his custodial sentence from today. Chan pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the same Code. Section 323 provides for a maximum one year in prison, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, while Section 326A allows for a sentence of up to twice the maximum term upon conviction for an offence under Section 323 if the victim is a spouse. According to the charge, Chan intentionally caused hurt to his then 37-year-old wife at around 8pm in a rented house in Kenyalang Park here on May 26, 2022. Based on the facts of the case, the victim had checked closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage on her mobile phone and discovered that Chan had removed her car battery. She then asked Chan for her car keys to inspect the vehicle's condition. However, Chan lost his temper and proceeded to punch her on the left side of her head, back of her neck, and above her left eye. As a result, the victim sustained bruises and swelling in those areas. Fearing a repeat of the incident, she lodged a police report for further action. Police arrested Chan on May 28, 2022. The investigation found that the incident was witnessed by another woman who was also renting a room at the house and that the assault had been captured on the CCTV recording. A medical report confirmed that the victim sustained swelling on the left temporal area of her head and around her left eye. It is also understood that the victim and Chan were in the process of getting a divorce at the time of the incident. Kuching e-hailing driver who asked teen passenger to remove headscarf gets one day in jail, RM5,000 fine

KUCHING (Aug 6): The Magistrates' Court here today imprisoned an e-hailing driver for one day and fined him RM5,000 in default three weeks' jail for asking a teenage passenger to remove her headscarf. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan convicted Wan Allam Halim Shah, 62, on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to five years in jail, or a fine, or both, upon conviction. Wan Allam paid the fine. According to the charge, he intended to insult the modesty of a 16-year-old girl at around 11pm at Jalan Camar on April 26. Based on the facts of the case, the retiree, who worked as an e-hailing driver, drove the victim from an eatery at Jalan Matang to Kampung Rampangi. It is understood the victim was heading home after completing her part-time job at the eatery. During the journey, Wan Allam repeatedly asked the girl to remove her headscarf, saying he wanted to see her face because he did not believe she was only 16. The victim did not comply with his request and felt his actions humiliated her as a Muslim woman. She managed to record a video of his requests. A police report was lodged leading to Wan Allam's arrest. Deputy public prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid appeared for the prosecution while Wan Allam did not have legal representation.

Two businessmen remanded over RM800,000 bribery case in Kuching

KUCHING (Aug 5): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak has remanded two business owners for allegedly soliciting and receiving more than RM800,000 in bribes to facilitate an application for a non-existent commercial land lot in Kuching. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan issued a six-day remand order until Aug 11 at the Kuching Magistrate's Court today, following an application by MACC. Sources said the two male suspects, both in their 50s, were arrested around 8pm yesterday when they turned up at the MACC Sarawak office to give their statements. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired to solicit and receive bribes as an inducement to help process an application for a commercial development land lot in Kuching. However, such an application never existed,' the source said. It is believed the alleged offences took place between 2020 and 2021.
