Pennsylvania lawmakers pass bill making the Hershey's Kiss the 'State Candy'

(WHTM)– A bill to designate Hershey's Kiss as the Pennsylvania State candy has passed the House and advanced to the Senate. House Bill 1030, sponsored by state Representative Thomas Mehaffie (R-106) and co-sponsored by various other representatives from both sides of the aisle, would designate Hershey's Kisses as the official state candy of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. According to the bill, if passed, Hershey's Kisses would immediately be designated the official State candy in perpetuity, and as long as the Hershey Company remains in Pennsylvania. The bill highlights The Hershey Company's success, calling kisses one of the most iconic candies of all time. The Hershey Kiss bill has been introduced several times in the General Assembly but has faced pushback for fear of giving the 'State Candy' title to one company. In March, Pennsylvania State Senator Lisa Boscola said she plans to introduce a bill making Peeps the official candy of Pennsylvania. Hershey sells its products in 85 countries around the globe and produces more than 70,000,000 Hershey's kisses daily in Hershey. The bill added that the Hershey Company supports many aspects of Pennsylvania's economy, including its dairy industry. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Proposed bill would make Hershey's Kisses the official candy of Pennsylvania

A new piece of legislation is aimed at making Hershey's Kisses the official state candy of Pennsylvania. Earlier this week, House Bill 1030, better known as the Hershey Kiss Bill, passed with overwhelming support. The idea for the bill actually started as a middle school social studies project. Fast forward a few years later and Rep. Tom Mehaffie, the bill's sponsor, who represents the area where the famous chocolate came to be, is now urging the state senate to vote in favor of making the Kisses a symbol of the commonwealth. Getty Images However, Sen. Lisa Boscola, who represents Lehigh County, the home of the Marshmallow Peep, is saying not so fast. Rep. Boscola released a statement last month laying out to make the iconic, colorful marshmallow treats the state's official candy. Peeps marshmallow treats move through the manufacturing process at the Just Born factory in Bethlehem, Pa., Thursday, April 10, 2025. Matt Rourke / AP Obviously, both candy items were born in Pennsylvania and have made a huge impact on the state's economy and both are internationally known. At this point, nothing is official yet and regardless whether it's the Kisses or the Peeps, Pennsylvania would be the first state in the country to have an official candy. Rep. Mahaffie has told other media outlets that Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro would make the Hershey Kisses bill official if it makes its way to his desk.

Pennsylvania lawmaker wants to make Peeps the official state candy

A Pennsylvania lawmaker wants to make a classic Easter-time treat the official state candy. Sen. Lisa Boscola (D-Northampton) says she will soon introduce legislation to designate Peeps as the official state candy. Peeps — the iconic, colorful marshmallow treat often shaped as chicks or bunnies — have been manufactured in Bethlehem, Pa., since 1953. Boscola argues that Peeps have become a culturally important American icon and, locally, manufacturing the treat creates hundreds of jobs and supports charitable initiatives. 'Given Pennsylvania's rich confectionery history, it is fitting that we finally honor one of our own with this unique designation,' Boscola said. 'Peeps are not only a symbol of Pennsylvania's well-earned reputation for satisfying candy cravings, but of our imagination and enduring spirit.' But, there is competition for state candy designation. A bill passed in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives last March would make Hershey's Kisses the official state candy. Legislators propose changes following explosion at Pennsylvania chocolate factory

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Two state senators are proposing legislation that would implement changes recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the wake of an explosion at a Berks County chocolate factory. Senators Judy Schwank (D-Berks) and Lisa Boscola (D-Northampton) are proposing three bills that would implement recommendations made by the NTSB. 'On March 24, 2023, a tragic explosion occurred at the R.M. Palmer Company in West Reading,' Schwank said in a co-sponsorship memorandum. 'This horrific event sent shockwaves through the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We still feel those effects today as we continue to mourn the seven lives we sadly lost.' The three bills, if passed, would implement three recommendations: (1) to modify the Underground Utility Line Protection Law to require all owners and operators of pipelines transporting steam or other high-temperature materials located in public rights-of-way to register their assets with the Pennsylvania One Call System; (2) to clarify that confidential security information disclosure restrictions do not apply to the National Transportation Safety Board when it is conducting an accident investigation; and (3) to require the installation of natural gas alarms that meet the specifications of National Fire Protection Association 715 in businesses, residences, and other buildings where people congregate that could be affected by a natural gas leak. The retired line was a stub that remained connected to the gas main. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pennsylvania Sen. looks to enact ‘back-to-school sales tax holiday'

PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — A senator announced plans to introduce legislation that would establish a back-to-school sales tax holiday. The bill, authored by Sen. Lisa Boscola (D – Lehigh, Northampton), would create an annual sales tax holiday that would run from the first Saturday in August through the third Saturday in August. Boscola argued that during a time when high inflation 'plagues families across Pennsylvania,' there is no need to complicate the already difficult balance of providing a healthy upbringing. 'While everyone is hurting from the effects of inflation, the impact on families with children and college students is amplified when it's time to purchase essential school supplies,' Boscola wrote. 'Like most items, prices of school supplies have risen sharply with inflation. I believe we can do something to help these Pennsylvanians.' During the time aforementioned, school supplies, art supplies and instructional materials with a sales price of not more than $50 would be exempt from state sales tax. Personal computers and tablets with a sale price of not more than $1,500 would also be exempt. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
