Lisandro Martinez hoping to join Manchester United's pre season tour of the U.S.A
Good news has been at a premium for Ruben Amorim since he took charge at Manchester United midway through last year's disastrous campaign. A long injury list didn't help the Portuguese head coach get his message across to his first team squad which resulted in a record low Premier League finish and failing to get over the line in the Europa League. World Cup winning centre-back Lisandro Martinez was one of the key players Amorim lost through injury after the Argentine suffered knee ligament damage in February, ruling him out the crucial half of the season. Martinez is arguably United's best centre-half when fit and making sure he is available for the majority of the upcoming campaign will be central to Amorim's plans. Return date looming? The 27-year-old is still in recovery from his lay off but is desperate to make his return in time for the tricky opening fixtures United have been handed in the Premier League. As reported by The Athletic, Amorim is hoping the defender will able to join up with the squad for the pre season tour of the U.S. even if he cannot contribute in the matches. Not only will this help with Martinez ability to keep up with the tactical set up Amorim is attempting to deploy in his back three, United's head coach also sees him as key member of the squad in terms of his off the pitch qualities. It's reported Martinez is 'close' to to returning to group training but the final decision will be made by the medical staff as to whether he will fly out to The States. Better safe than sorry The difference Martinez makes to United's ability to play out from the back is evident, and this coupled with his no-nonsense approach makes him a key component to the back line when fit. Despite Amorim's wishes, he will be well aware of the risks attached with rushing Martinez back who has suffered badly with injuries since his first season at Old Trafford. United are likely to take their time with the return of the former Ajax man but given the importance of the early league fixtures, it would not be a surprise to see him feature in the opening weeks of the new campaign. Amorim's men are back in action tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon as they take on old rivals Leeds United in their first pre season fixture, in Stockholm. Martinez has been officially ruled out of the trip to Sweden but having him on the plane to the U.S. will be a major shot in the arm for Amorim and his plans for the upcoming season. 'The picture is too cloudy for any Man Utd fan to feel confident'
Injuries have dented the confidence of Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez, who must compete for a place in a defence containing promising youngsters Leny Yoro and Ayden Onana's pre-season hamstring issue gives Amorim an opportunity to assess his goalkeeping options but, in truth, unless 21-year-old Radek Vitek steps up, the choice will be to stick or twist with the Cameroon international, given Altay Bayindir was given his chance at the end of last season and failed to is a similar story in pursuit of Liam Delap, who instead chose Chelsea, emphasises Amorim feels he can improve on Rasmus Gyokeres, who played for Amorim at Sporting, has also decided against a move to Watkins, who lost his place at Aston Villa when Marcus Rashford arrived from United on loan, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. So too have out-of-contract pair Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jamie Vardy. They are all names to suggest United might be better off giving Hojlund one more can Amorim trust that the Dane is ready to fulfil the promise that prompted United to pay Atalanta £72m for him two years ago?Hojlund himself has been linked with his old boss Gian Piero Gasperini at Roma. Man Utd star's honest Ruben Amorim thoughts as he lifts lid on not being happy
Manchester United ace Lisandro Martinez's career has been repeatedly disrupted by a series of debilitating injuries, with the Argentine admitting that he has struggled at times to cope Lisandro Martinez has opened up about his struggles with mental health and his journey to finding peace, while also sharing his thoughts on Ruben Amorim. In a candid interview, the Manchester United defender revealed how therapy transformed his life, offering a rare glimpse into the personal challenges faced by a Premier League footballer. Martinez, who has endured a series of injury setbacks since joining United in 2022, admitted that his mental health took a hit during his time in the Netherlands. "I've been in therapy since I was at Ajax," he told Clank Media. "I was always against it until I found myself at a point in my life in Amsterdam where I had everything... I played for a European team, I was in the national team, I had the car I always wanted, I played every weekend, and I still felt empty, like I wasn't happy. "It's not an easy process. You have to have the humility to accept being a normal person. Yes, I'm a footballer, but it's a profession, it's a sport, and we're all people." Therapy, he explained, helped him shift his perspective. "Since I started, I haven't stopped," Martinez continued. "I understood that you shouldn't look for anything outside but rather inside. I found happiness and peace with myself, which is priceless." His reflections on his upbringing in Gualeguay, Argentina, paint a picture of resilience forged in adversity. "I come from a very poor background," he shared. "I know what it is to struggle, to be hungry, cold, hot. Did I go hungry? Yes. "From a very young age, we were a very large family. Three families lived together, my grandparents, my uncles and cousins, all on the same plot of land." Meals were sparse, often just tea and bread for dinner, but Martinez looks back with gratitude. "Maybe without that, today I wouldn't be who I am," he said. "What percentage of chances are there for a kid from Gualeguay, from the neighbourhood I came from, to get to where I am today?" Injuries may have slowed him down, but Martinez has been on an upward curve ever since turning pro in 2016. After sealing a career-launching move to Ajax in 2019, the centre back - who has regularly been written off due to his small stature - starred as the club won back-to-back Eredivisie titles in 2021 and 2022. Shortly after following Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by lifting the World Cup with Argentina. Success at United has been limited to a couple of domestic cup wins, but when fit, Martinez has proven himself to be up to the challenge. Ten Hag's departure in 2024 cast doubt over the 27-year-old's future in Manchester, particularly with his unconvincing injury record. But Martinez, who was sidelined again with an ACL injury in February, says he has a good relationship with new head coach Amorim, who has brought "energy and willingness" to the squad. "The club is obviously going through a process of change," he said. "Since Six Alex Ferguson's departure, they haven't found a manager who hits the right note. Ten Hag did a remarkable job at Ajax, which is why he went to United, and thanks to him, I joined the club as well. "It's like everything in life: you take a gamble, and sometimes it works out well, sometimes it doesn't. I think that, like any club, if something isn't working, it needs to be changed. It's necessary to analyse what's working and what isn't and make changes accordingly because that's how great clubs operate. Manchester is one of the best clubs in the world. "Now Ruben Amorim has arrived with very good energy and willingness. I believe he will make the necessary changes. Without a doubt change is needed, because where we ended up in the table over the last two seasons is unacceptable." ‘I was gutted' – Former Man Utd wonderkid felt ‘disrespected' by Ten Hag as he reveals moment he knew he had to leave
ZIDANE IQBAL has opened up on how he thought Erik ten Hag did not "respect me enough to play". The former Manchester United wonderkid had starred for the club since the age of nine before going on to make his professional debut for the senior team in 2021 during a Champions League clash against Young Boys. 4 4 That appearance saw him create history by becoming the first British-born South Asian or Iraqi international to play for the club and first ever British South Asian to play in the Champions League. However, in June 2023 it was announced the youngster would be leaving Old Trafford to join Dutch side Utrecht. And Iqbal has now given a candid interview about his exit to respected Man Utd journalist, Andy Mitten, published in The National. Now a full senior international for his country, the 22-year-old has recalled one incident which he views as the "turning point" for the promising trajectory of his Man Utd career. Iqbal recalls how, after being moved to the first team dressing room at the start of the season, he had grown frustrated with a lack of senior minutes off the bench, telling his dad and agent: "I can't do this for another year." A would-be chance finally reared its head in the League Cup quarter-final against Charlton at Old Trafford in January 2023. Iqbal claims he was set to start the clash as the Number 10 against the League One outfit having been involved in all the shapes and patterns in pre-match training. He even recalls a classy gesture from Lisandro Martinez as the Argentine defender told him: "'Now's your chance, all of us are supporting you. Just show yourself, you're a good player." BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK However, Iqbal saw his dreams dashed come matchday, and opened up how then Red Devils boss Ten Hag had left him feeling "disrespected." He said: "I got tickets for family and friends to see me. Finally, my chance. "Then I got to the stadium, looked at the whiteboard and didn't see my name. I was gutted. "Then I thought I'd come off the bench. Nothing. That was the turning point for me. "I didn't feel the manager respected me enough to play me." Iqbal would not make the bench again in the Cup as Man Utd went on to beat Newcastle in the final, while he also did not make a single matchday squad for the FA Cup. In fact, after his quarter-final disappointment, Iqbal only made the Man Utd bench on three more occasions in the Premier League. But he was an unused substitute in back-to-back clashes against Leeds and an away game against Nottingham Forest. Iqbal explained how his lack of game time led to him wanting to go to the Under-19 World Cup that April. He took pointers off of Tom Heaton on how to argue his case to the manager, with the senior goalkeeper telling him: "That's awful. You're making it about yourself. Make it about the gaffer." In their meeting Ten Hag urged him not to go and to stay patient, which he did by remaining at Man Utd for the Spring, but those minutes never materialised and he lost his chance to become the Premier League's first Iraqi footballer. That noteworthy accolade has since gone to Ali Al-Hamadi when he came off the bench to star for Ipswich Town against Liverpool in August 2024. His appearance took the number of nationalities to appear in England 's top flight to 124. In the end Iqbal told his agent he wanted a transfer away, and took inspiration from Jadon Sancho who had travelled away from England to spark his career into gear. Iqbal 18 games in the Eredivisie last season and scored one goal before a knee injury ended his season. On his future he said his goal was to recover from his knee blow and get back to playing week in week out. He called Utrecht a "family club", but added manager Ron Jans is "very nice" despite the environment still being "ruthless". Iqbal concluded: "For me, I'll continue to do my best for my club and for Iraq. This is the life that I always wanted." 4
