Betsy Gay, 'Little Rascals' Star, Dies at 96: 'She Will Be Deeply Missed'

Gay, who appeared in the series in the 1930s before it was renamed The Little Rascals, died in Bakersfield, Calif., on Friday, June 13, her friend Robert Satterfield announced on Facebook. The news has since been shared by Variety, which also cited Satterfield. Gay joined the Our Gang series in the 1930s, eventually appearing in the shorts as Effie, the girlfriend of Alfalfa, until 1938. She made appearances in projects including Our Gang Follies of 1938 and Came the Brawn as part of the group, per IMDB. Her other notable appearances included The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, At the Circus and Mystery Plane, as she acted in more than 40 films until she turned 13, according to a Hillbilly Music biography shared by her friend. The Our Gang shorts, released between 1922 and 1944 and created by producer Hal Roach, spawned later iterations including the 1994 film, The Little Rascals. In a 2011 interview with Darwin Lee Hill, shared by the Southern Music Research Center, Gay reflected on getting her start in the film business. "Those days, there was a lot of kids who worked in movies," she said. "One mother told my mother, 'You ought to take Betsy to [the studio], they come there all the time looking for kids to be in Our Gang comedies.' So she took me over there and sure enough, a month later, a man came over... he took us in and we were in Our Gang movies." In 1941, Gay launched a career in Western music when she practiced yodeling after being asked to appear in an Andy Clyde short for Columbia Pictures, per her biography. She continued to act into her teens at the Pasadena Playhouse in productions of Quality Street, A Kiss For Cinderella and Heroes Unlimited and appeared in the 1943 film What's Buzzin', Cousin? Her other accomplishments in music include performing alongside Stuart Hamblen and his Lucky Stars in the '40s, winning the California State Yodeling Championship in both 1945 and 1946, appearing on radio and recording music under both Capitol Records and Decca Records, with the latter alongside Russ Morgan's band. She also was a regular cast member on Country America on KABC TV alongside Johnny Cash, Faron Young, The Everly Brothers and more from 1957 to 1959. Gay shared five children — Mimi, Gigi, Tommy, Suzy and Cathy —with her husband Thomas Cashen, who she wed in 1954, per her biography. Little Rascals actress and former child star Betsy Gay dies aged 96
The former child star Betsy Gay, who rose to prominence in the 1930s, has died aged 96. The late screenstar and renowned yodeller died on June 13, as confirmed by her friend Bob Satterfield. As a child star during the Golden Age of Hollywood, her movie career kicked off after appearing in a series of comedy films called Our Gang comedies e.g. Our Gangs Follies of 1938, which later became well known as Little Rascals. After starring in the role of Alfalfa's girlfriend Effie for multiple years, she moved on at the end of the decade. Other high-profile projects she was involved in included Arbor Day, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Pinch Singer, with her featuring in over 40 movies (credited or uncredited) over the course of her career. In 1941, she had a yodelling scene in an Andy Clyde short, and after performing the skill in a handful of other movies, she started singing with country music stars of the time such as Stuart Hamblen and his Lucky Stars and Tex Williams. She was also California State Yodelling Champion two years in a row in the mid-1940s. Per reports, Betsy was also the youngest entertainer to sing and yodel for the Hollywood Victory Committee Shows during World War Two. As well as appearing on stage in productions like Quality Street, A Kiss For Cinderella, and Heros Unlimited. More Trending Alongside her brewing music career, which involved touring and radio appearances on shows like The Jimmy Wakeley Show and The Don Amache Show, she continued pursuing acting opportunities. At one point, she was a regular cast member of the ABC show Squeakin' Deacon's Country Store and in the 1960s was a regular on the Mike Douglas show, International Party Time which ran for 13 weeks. In 1954, she married Thomas Cashen and they shared five children – twins Mimi and Gigi, Tommy, Suzy and Cathy. Although she has not been in the limelight for several decades, in 2019 she uploaded a brief YouTube clip celebrating World Yodel Day. Got a story? On Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 30, the stage school showcased the talents of students from the age of three to 18 with an array of themes throughout the performances. Class One had a piece prepared around superheroes, where they sang, danced and recited a poem, all the while looking very cute. The Boys Only class, which is always an audience favourite, performed a scene from the classic family film, Little Rascals, and they also danced to Pump up the Jam and Runaway. Class Three were beautifully styled, donning the latest princess fashion. They sang beautifully to I'm a Believer and With a Little Help from my Friends, as well as reciting a lovely poem. Their choreography was arranged to Under the Sun and Filthy Rich. Class Four and Class Five performed scenes from the musical, Annie singing Hard Knock Life, Never Fully Dressed and Tomorrow. In their respective classes, Class Four danced to I Found You and That's so True; and Class Five to Espresso and We Can't be Friends. The audience continued to be wowed as the Seniors didn't miss a beat in their pieces to Razzle Dazzle, Disturbia, Dancing through Life, and Abracadabra. Meanwhile, senior student, Leah St Ledger choreographed a dance to I can do it with a Broken Heart. Soloists on the night were Clara Brennan, Claudia Kenny, Aoibhe Murphy, Aoife McGlanaghey, Cora McGrath, Freya Ronan, Sarah Mackey and Ellie Rose Flynn. The finale brought the audience to great applause, with some singing along, to an ABBA megamix. Commenting on the performances, Ms Cooney said she would like to thank those who contributed to the nights' success, particularly those back stage and front-of-house, and Carmel Rowe and Niamh Cullen for drama and singing, Musical Director, Philip Kennedy, and Tomás Kavanagh for sound and lights.
