Arsenal Women set to sign Liverpool striker Olivia Smith in world-record deal

Liverpool striker Olivia Smith is set to join Arsenal in a world-record £1million deal. All agreements are in place with the deal set to be announced imminently. The 20-year-old was Liverpool Women's top scorer last season with seven goals after joining from Sporting Lisbon in July 2024 for a club record fee of €250,000 (£212,000). Arsenal's bid of £1m ($1.36m) exceeds the previous record fee set by Chelsea when they signed USWNT defender Naomi Girma from the San Diego Wave for $1.1m in January. Liverpool had finished fourth in the Women's Super League (WSL) and Matt Beard had been named manager of the year when she signed. They could not replicate this success last season as the side finished seventh and Beard was sacked in February. 'Even back then (when I was a child), I swear, I wanted to win a Ballon d'Or one day,' she said to in November 2024 . 'I wanted to play in a World Cup, in an Olympics, to play for my national team. 'I could see myself meeting my idols and playing against them.' Her longstanding ambition complements her move to Arsenal, who claimed their second Champions League title last season with victories over eight-time champions OL Lyonnes in the semi-final and 1-0 win over Barcelona in the Lisbon final. Arsenal finished second in the WSL last season behind unbeaten Chelsea, and have been active in the transfer window this summer, making Chloe Kelly's loan deal permanent from Manchester City, while Smith's Liverpool teammate Taylor Hinds also joined Renee Slegers' side following the expiration of her contract in Merseyside. In 2019 Smith became the youngest ever player to play for Canada, at 15 years old and 94 days, in a 4-0 loss to Brazil. She has made 16 appearances for the nation's senior team, scoring three and assisting three, and was named Canada Soccer's Young Player of the Year in 2024. Liverpool Women sign Rangers midfielder Maclean

Liverpool Women have made their first signing of the summer window with the acquisition of Kirsty Maclean. The 20-year-old joins from Rangers where she came through the academy before making her debut in her side's 2021/22 title-winning season. Advertisement Maclean's performances earned her a call up to the Scottish national team with the midfielder featuring 10 times for her country so far. "I'm really looking forward to it. I'm really excited to get going in pre-season and to meet all the girls, and hopefully we can start the season well," Maclean said about joining Liverpool. "I think the club speaks for itself. It's obviously a massive club with a lot of history and to be able to represent the badge is a really proud moment for me." While Maclean's arrival is the first Liverpool signing of the summer they have already lost Taylor Hinds to Arsenal with forward Olivia Smith also rumoured to be joining the Gunners in a world-record fee.

Liverpool Women in talks to appoint Gareth Taylor as head coach

Gareth Taylor is in talks with Liverpool Women to become the club's head coach. Discussions between former Manchester City boss Taylor and Liverpool are ongoing, but nothing has yet been signed. Taylor, 52, would be the permanent replacement for Matt Beard, who was sacked in February and replaced on an interim basis by Amber Whiteley, who will remain at Liverpool as assistant coach. Advertisement Liverpool finished seventh in the Women's Super League (WSL) in 2024-25, the same position as when Beard left, after a fourth-place finish the previous campaign. Despite adding Olivia Smith to the squad from Sporting CP for a club-record fee (£210,000), Liverpool were not able to replicate their previous WSL success. The Merseyside club matched their previous term's number of league defeats within the first 10 games but did manage to win three of their last eight matches after Whiteley took over. Liverpool were promoted back to the WSL under Beard in 2022 and finished seventh in their first season back. Beard described their rise to fourth in the following campaign as the side having 'overperformed' in relation to their budget when compared with the WSL's traditional top four — Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal. Taylor spent four and a half years with City before parting ways with the club in March, with the side one point off the Champions League places and 12 points off league leaders Chelsea. The Englishman won the FA Cup in 2020 and the League Cup two years later with the Manchester club but could not lead them to a WSL title, finishing second in 2021 and 2024. Under Taylor, City only finished outside the top three — and qualification for the Champions League — once, in 2022-23. Beard, meanwhile, has since been appointed as head coach at third-tier side Burnley.

Chelsea vs Liverpool LIVE: Women's Super League latest score, goals and updates from fixture

The new Women's Super League marks the start of a new era for reigning champions Chelsea, with long-serving boss Emma Hayes having departed in summer to start a new adventure with the USA Women's team. Last year they just about did enough to claim the title on goal difference ahead of Manchester City, while Arsenal will again hope to make it a three-horse race for the WSL title. Meanwhile Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham will hope to progress after further rebuilding this summer. Crystal Palace were promoted to replace Bristol City in the top flight, while on a wider note, the league is now under the management and operation of a new organisation set up to lead women's football towards further growth and progression, with Nikki Doucet overseeing both the WSL and Championship in a new phase for the game.
