Anti-littering poster campaign launched in Llandybie
The campaign, delivered in schools, encouraged children to help keep playgrounds clean and free from dog mess. Llandybie Community Council organised the campaign as part of its activities for Love Your Park Day. The competition involved four primary schools, with pupils designing posters to promote cleaner parks and discourage dog fouling. Councillor Julian Tandy, chairman of Llandybie Community Council, said: "Love Your Park Day 2025 is an ideal opportunity to highlight the importance we put on keeping our parks as a safe environment for our children to play in, free from litter and dog fouling. "We have 10 parks which is far more than many community councils so it's a large part on what we spend our time and the precept on. "Educating and prevention is what we have adopted as a strategy, and we are looking to the children in our community to learn for themselves and influence the older generation through friends and family." Llandybie Community Council is responsible for 10 community parks—more than any other community council in Carmarthenshire. During its most recent annual inspection by the county council, only two issues were identified and both were resolved within days. The community council carries out weekly visual inspections and monthly technical checks to ensure equipment and facilities remain safe and compliant. It also maintains a zero-tolerance policy on dog fouling, working with police and environment officers to tackle the issue. In a UK first, the council has deployed mobile CCTV cameras with artificial intelligence to identify dog owners and breeds. Recent upgrades across the parks include an outdoor gym, improved multi-games area, disability access ramp and tables in Llandybie, and a new trampoline and table tennis area in Penygroes. The council also contributed £25,000 to Caerbryn Community to replace its children's play area. In Capel Hendre, Banc Y Draenen Park has been converted into a green space, complete with meadow planting, an apple orchard, and a wildlife-friendly hedge. Plans are under way to upgrade Saron Park, including new play equipment and CCTV to deter vandalism and improve safety.

Hundreds attend purple plaque unveiling of Agnes Davies
On Friday, June 20, residents attended Sarons Hall where a presentation was held in memory of Agnes Davies. Agnes was born in Saron in 1920 before experiencing a hugely successful snooker and billiards career that spanned across 64 years, winning the Women's Professional Snooker Championship in 1949. She would never let us beat her in snooker. 'My father would deliberately miss shots so we could pot the pink or the black. But against my mother we would have to win through merit.' (Image: Newsquest) Agnes' Nephew, Donald Treharne added: 'There are very few people who were in her position. Now billiards is more available but it used to be more of an upper-class sport and yet she was able to have so much success. We are all very proud of her.' Lawrence Raison said: 'It means a lot to me and everyone here. She was a snooker player here in Saron and she taught us a lot. But at the same time, she was a very humble woman. Cllr Craig Davies said: 'It's a purple plaque for a recognisable woman with exceptional achievements. Agnes was known in the highest circles of the snooker world.' Chair of Llandybie Community Council, Cllr Julian Tandy agreed: 'It's lovely to see. This is someone who has long deserved such recognition. Imagine coming back to the game at 60 years old and winning a world championship." Llandybie Community Councillor, Cllr Anita Evans also said: 'It's amazing to see this for women in sport. She competed against the best in the world and had so many achievements. 'I remember when she played at the Butlins Billiard Championships when she was playing with a broken arm and still managed to beat a man at that competition.' The event was hosted by Purple Plaques, an organisation dedicated to shining a light on the achievements of remarkable women. Rhian believes Agnes broke down barriers for women.
