Jones and Wales hit for six as England complete thrashing

CARRIE Jones made her major tournament debut but could not prevent Wales crashing to a 6-1 thrashing at the hands of England on Sunday evening. Defeat represented the end of Wales' European Championship 2025 campaign following heavy defeats against the Netherlands, France and England. Newtown raised Jones was absent for the opening two defeats though Ceri Holland, who qualifies for Wales via her Llanrhaeadr-born mother, was selected. Georgia Stanway opened the scoring with a 13th-minute penalty after VAR ruled Jones fouled Georgia Stanway before Ella Toone doubled the scoring in the 21st minute. Lauren Hemp made it three inside the opening half hour and Alessia Russo got on the scoresheet in the 44th minute and substitute Beth Mead made it five before Hannah Cain clawed one back for Wales. Substitute Aggie Beever-Jones completed the rout in the second-half. Wales coach Rhian Wilkinson said there had been a real fitness gap between Wales and the elite countries with her squad including five players without a club. The Canadian coach is adamant players will need to be more involved at club level to be selected in future. 'An international programme can't really do that,' said Wilkinson. 'We get them on a FIFA window for 10 days. So, my players have to be playing. 'I've got to try to find them opportunities abroad, maybe in Scandinavia, maybe I can send them to North America, which is a tough challenge, but they have to be playing. That's the basic. 'How do we work with them to continue to push their physical standards, because, I'll be honest, we don't have enough of my players right now who are hitting the top-level benchmark.'
