Mechanic arrested for chop shop, vehicle theft near Lloydminster: RCMP

Police say they have made an arrest in relation to a chop shop in Kitscoty, Alta., about 20 kilometres west of Lloydminster. Kitscoty Mounties received a report on May 27 of stolen truck parts being sold on Facebook Marketplace. With assistance from the Lloydminster investigation unit, and Alberta RCMP's eastern crime reduction unit, officers conducted an investigation resulting in the search of a local mechanic shop in the Kitscoty area. RCMP say the suspect was stealing vehicles, cutting them up at the shop and selling the parts. Four vehicles were found to be stolen out of Lloydminster, Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan and Maidstone, Sask. A 29-year-old Lloydminster resident was arrested and has since been released. Pending charges include four counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking and trafficking stolen property under $5,000. The individual is scheduled to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Lloydminster on Aug. 12.

Lloydminster power substation deliberately shot at, leads to outage and $1M in damages: RCMP

Lloydminster RCMP are investigating an early morning power outage on Monday, which they say was caused by someone shooting at a substation. Mounties responded to an outage at an Atco substation near 12 Street and 78 Avenue at around 4:40 a.m. In a statement the next day, investigators said the substation was 'deliberately targeted.' They said an oil tank was shot, leading to a 'significant power outage' in the area. Approximately 20,000 litres of oil leaked out. Damages and cleanup costs are estimated to be about $1.1 million, according to police. A series of break-ins were also reported during the power outage, but RCMP do not believe the incidents to be linked. They continue to investigate. RCMP investigate after electric substation shot at, causing oil leak and power outage

An investigation is underway after an electricity substation near the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary was shot at early Monday, spilling oil and leaving thousands in the dark. RCMP say they responded to a 'firearms-related' call at an Atco substation in Lloydminster, a town straddling the provincial boundary. They say the facility was shot at and a bullet hit an oil tank, knocking out power to more than 2,500 residents for at least three hours and releasing roughly 20,000 litres of oil. Preliminary estimates place the cost of damage and environmental cleanup at about $1.1 million. Police are also investigating several break-ins that took place during the outage, but there's no evidence to suggest they are connected. A spokesperson for Atco Energy did not immediately return a request for comment.
