DILG deploys tanods in schools after Nueva Ecija campus shooting

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday said it has ordered the deployment of barangay tanods in campuses following the fatal shooting in a school on Nueva Ecija. In its Memorandum Circular 2025-072, the DILG called on barangays to coordinate with DepEd schools in their respective areas for the deployment of their tanods. The barangay tanods are expected to manage traffic during arrival and dismissal as well as patrol school premises and nearby areas frequented by students. They will also monitor and report incidents that may threaten safety and perform other lawful duties assigned by the Punong Barangay or the police to secure school zones. 'City and municipal mayors are likewise urged to provide full logistical support to barangays to ensure the effective implementation of this initiative,' the DILG said in a statement. 'The DILG calls on all local governments, school officials, and communities to work together in making every learning space in the country safe and secure for Filipino learners,' it added. According to the DILG, the Local Government Code of 1991 states that tanods serve as community service units to assist in peace and order efforts. The DILG made the order following a shooting incident in the Sta. Rosa Integrated School in Barangay Rizal, Santa Rosa, Nueva Ecija on August 7. The 18-year-old man who shot his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend inside the school later on passed away. Meanwhile, the girl is still in critical condition. -KG, GMA Integrated News
