Canadiens New Forward Is Prime Breakout Candidate

Earlier this off-season, the Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Zack Bolduc from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for defenseman Logan Mailloux. This is easily one of the most intriguing trades of the summer, as Bolduc and Mailloux are both former first-round picks with very bright futures. Yet, with the Canadiens bringing in star right-shot defenseman Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders, it makes sense that they were willing to part ways with Mailloux to land a young forward like Bolduc.

Blues waive veteran defenseman Nick Leddy a day after acquiring Logan Mailloux

The St. Louis Blues placed veteran defenseman Nick Leddy on waivers Wednesday. Leddy, 34, has one more season remaining on the four-year, $16 million contract he signed with the Blues in 2022. The club will find out Thursday afternoon if Leddy has been claimed. His placement on waivers is not connected to a buyout, as the buyout period has closed. The move comes after the Blues made a trade Wednesday for Montreal Canadiens defenseman Logan Mailloux, giving them eight potential blueliners on the projected NHL roster. General manager Doug Armstrong said that Mailloux would have a spot in the top six as long as he earns it in training camp. That would leave Tyler Tucker, Matthew Kessel and Leddy competing for one starting spot and the other as the team's seventh defenseman: The Blues would like Tucker to be in the lineup, which makes Leddy the odd man out. Leddy appeared to be falling out of the picture anyway after playing just 31 games last season due to an undisclosed injury. He posted two goals and five points when in the lineup. The 34-year-old can still skate well, but the team has several players on the back end with that similar skill set. Mailloux and Tucker can provide a physical element that Leddy can't. Advertisement It's not yet known what the Blues will do with Leddy if he clears waivers. If they've placed him on waivers, they've likely already attempted to trade him and found no takers. When they placed Brandon Saad on waivers last season and he cleared, the team assigned him to AHL Springfield before the two sides mutually agreed to terminate the remainder of the contract, and Saad subsequently signed with the Vegas Golden Knights.
