MLB shocking moment: Yankees' Jorbit Vivas hits Angels star Logan O'Hoppe in head during eighth-inning swing (Image Source: Getty Images) Fans were stunned, and a player was shaken, by a jolting moment at Monday's game. What began as a routine night of baseball changed in a hurry. The New York Yankees played the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, May 26, 2025. But in the eighth something unexpected occurred, something that hushed the crowd. Logan O'Hoppe leaves game after scary bat incident Yankees rookie Jorbit Vivas is in the box to lead off the top of the eighth inning. He's a left-handed hitter. Behind him crouched Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe, as usual. Vivas made contact with the pitch and swung his bat all the way through—but on the follow-through, his bat hit O'Hoppe right in the head. The impact knocked off O'Hoppe's catcher's mask. He looked stunned but stayed in the game for the rest of the inning. Before the ninth began, though, the Angels made a call. They took O'Hoppe out of the game to get him checked for a possible head injury. Angels manager Ron Washington later told reporters that Logan O'Hoppe said he felt fine, but the team didn't want to take any chances. According to they are keeping a close watch on him and his condition. He's been a very good player for the team. For now, the team says he's 'day-to-day' and will determine at some base point before the next game if he is cleared to play in it. Jorbit Vivas is still new to the league. He joined the Yankees in late 2023. He made his big league debut on May 2, 2025, after an injury to Jazz Chisholm Jr. Since then, Vivas has been working hard to find his rhythm. He hit his first home run just a few days ago, on May 22, against the Rangers. That same night, the Yankees beat the Angels 5-1. Ryan Yarbrough pitched six strong innings, and Anthony Volpe delivered a big three-run double. For now, everyone is waiting to see if Logan O'Hoppe will return for Tuesday's game. Angels Announce Move for Former Giants Star After Dodgers Game
The Los Angeles Angels are not in the same class as the Los Angeles Dodgers, but it hasn't looked that way the past two games at Dodger Stadium. The former beat the latter 6-2 on Friday and 11-9 on Saturday, clinching the series win ahead of their matchup on Sunday afternoon. The Angels (19-25) scored five runs in four innings off of Clayton Kershaw on Saturday, spoiling his season debut. Logan O'Hoppe, Taylor Ward, and Matthew Lugo all homered, and O'Hoppe had a career-high five RBI. Advertisement The Angels are still last place in the AL West, but have now shrunk their deficit to six games behind the first-place Seattle Mariners. On top of that, they made a move to bolster the pitching staff ahead of Sunday's game, via Angels PR. Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Hunter Strickland (61) and catcher Logan O'Hoppe (14)© Eric Canha-Imagn Images "Angels transactions: •Selected the contract of RHP Hunter Strickland (#60) •Placed RHP José Fermín (right elbow impingement) on 15-day injured list (retro to May 15) •Designated INF Ryan Noda for assignment," they announced. The Boston Red Sox drafted Strickland in the 18th round of the 2007 MLB Draft before trading him to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009. The latter club then DFA'd the right-hander in 2013, and the San Francisco Giants claimed him off waivers. He made his MLB debut for them in 2014 and was named to the Opening Day roster in 2016. Advertisement Strickland stayed with the Giants through 2018 before playing for the Seattle Mariners, Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Tampa Bay Rays, Angels (2021), Milwaukee Brewers, Cincinnatti Reds, Angels again (2024), and Texas Rangers. The journeyman signed a minor league contract with the Angels on May 6, beginning his third stint with the team. Strickland owns a career 25-23 record with a 3.40 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 480 career games. The 36-year-old also has 29 saves out of 50 opportunities and 90 holds. O'Hoppe, Moncada deliver in Angels' 8th-inning rally for 8-3 win over Blue Jays
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Logan O'Hoppe drove in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, Yoán Moncada followed with a three-run homer, and the Los Angeles Angels rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-3 on Tuesday night for just their second win in 10 games. Zach Neto hustled home with the tying run to start a six-run rally in the eighth by the Angels, who scored more than five runs in a full game for the first time since April 10. O'Hoppe delivered an RBI single before Moncada hit his first homer since September 2023 in his first game back from a thumb injury. Jo Adell added another homer moments later. George Springer and Anthony Santander homered for the Blue Jays, who opened a six-game trip with their third straight loss. Tyler Anderson recovered from a rocky first inning to pitch six-hit ball into the seventh for the Angels. José Ureña pitched solidly into the fifth inning of his debut with the Blue Jays, who signed the right-hander Monday. Toronto is Ureña's eighth team in the past six seasons. After Springer hit his fourth homer in the first, Taylor Ward answered with a two-run shot to centre, ending his 1-for-35 slump. Santander then golfed a low breaking ball from Ryan Johnson into the short right-field porch with one out in the eighth. Héctor Neris (1-1) came on and got two outs, stranding two Blue Jays. KEY MOMENT Neto walked, stole second and scored the tying run when Ernie Clement couldn't handle Alejandro Kirk's throw to third after the catcher fielded Nolan Schanuel's poor bunt off Yimi García (0-2). KEY STAT Neto extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games with a first-inning single. UP NEXT Yusei Kikuchi (0-4, 4.21 ERA) takes his eighth shot at earning his first win for the Angels. Matt Chapman helps preserve Giants' 3-2 win over Angels with ugly but effective defensive play
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Matt Chapman rarely feels panicked on defense — you don't win five Gold Glove Awards and two Platinum Glove Awards by showing any fear in the field. But that's exactly what the San Francisco Giants third baseman felt in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday night when, with a runner on first base, one out and the Giants leading the Los Angeles Angels by a run, Logan O'Hoppe swung at a 3-0 pitch from Ryan Walker and sent a ground ball to third.
