Padres get small-ball run in 10th, edge Giants 1-0

June 3 - Jose Iglesias drove in the game's only run with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly and the San Diego Padres spoiled a brilliant pitching effort by Logan Webb in a 1-0 victory over the host San Francisco Giants on Monday night. While winning for just the second time in five extra-inning affairs this year, the Padres used fundamental baseball to plate the decisive tally. Tyler Wade sacrificed automatic runner Jake Cronenworth to third base, and Iglesias drove him home with a fly to medium-deep left field off Ryan Walker (1-3). Robert Suarez (1-1), who pitched the final two innings, stranded a runner at third base in the bottom of the 10th by getting Jerar Encarnacion to line out to first baseman Luis Arraez for the final out. Padres starter Stephen Kolek combined with four relievers on a five-hitter. Making just his sixth career start, Kolek overcame three hits, two walks and two hit batsmen to log 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out three. Webb went unrewarded for eight shutout, walk-free innings in which he allowed the Padres just six hits. He struck out seven. The Giants loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning before Kolek induced consecutive grounders to third baseman Iglesias. The first resulted in a force out at the plate before Iglesias elected to go around the horn for an inning-ending double play on the second. San Francisco took advantage of three walks to load the bases again in the seventh, but Jeremiah Estrada, the Padres' third pitcher, struck out Jung Hoo Lee to keep the game scoreless. The Padres' best chance to score against Webb came in the third when Arraez stroked a two-out double into the right field corner with Elias Diaz on first. But the lumbering catcher could only reach third on the hit, where he was stranded when Webb got Manny Machado to pop out. Wearing No. 4 on the back of his uniform on a day when major-leaguers honored Lou Gehrig with a No. 4 patch on the front of the jersey, Arraez joined teammate Xander Bogaerts as the only players in the game with an extra-base hit, each with a double. Adrian Morejon and Jason Adam also contributed to the Padres' pitching effort, which resulted in just the Giants' second loss in six extra-inning games this season. --Field Level Media

Jose Iglesias' sacrifice fly in the 10th lifts Padres over Giants 1-0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jose Iglesias hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th to break a scoreless tie, scoring automatic runner Jake Cronenworth as the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 1-0 on Monday night. Tyler Wade's sacrifice bunt started the inning against Ryan Walker (1-3). Robert Suarez (1-1) gave up Patrick Bailey's leadoff single in the ninth but got out of it unscathed and finished for the win. Logan Webb struck out seven and didn't walk a batter over eight scoreless innings and outdueled Stephen Kolek for much of the game but didn't have a win to show for it as San Francisco squandered scoring chances. Jeremiah Estrada entered for San Diego with a runner aboard and two outs in the seventh then walked Tyler Fitzgerald. After a mound visit, Heliot Ramos walked to load the bases but Jung Hoo Lee struck out on three pitches. Kolek pitched into the sixth in his sixth major league start. He retired pinch-hitter Jerar Encarnacion on an inning-ending groundout after Encarnacion came off the 60-day injured list earlier Monday following a hand fracture in spring training that required surgery. Manny Machado went hitless for only the seventh time in his last 28 games for the Padres, who are in a stretch playing 26 games in 27 days through June 25 — all of those games against the NL West. Key moment Webb and catcher Patrick Bailey turned an inning-ending double play in the second when Wade struck out swinging and Bailey fired to shortstop Willy Adames to catch Jake Cronenworth trying to steal second. The Giants then missed an opportunity grounding into a double play to end the bottom half, and did so again in the third. Key stat Both starters hit batters with pitches in the first three innings, including Giants designated hitter Wilmer Flores grimacing and letting out a groan as he took a hard inside pitch off his left elbow in the third. Flores was visibly upset and Padres catcher Elias Díaz tried to defuse the situation as Flores made his way toward first. Up next RHP Ryan Bergert (1-0, 0.00 ERA) pitches the second game for San Diego opposite Giants RHP Landen Roupp (3-4, 3.54). ___ AP MLB:

Padres' Gavin Sheets avoids head injury after crash into wall

June 3 - San Diego left fielder Gavin Sheets said Monday that he passed all concussion tests following a hard face-first collision with the wall during the Padres' Sunday home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sheets was down on the warning track for several minutes after trying to prevent Adam Frazier's fourth-inning homer. He eventually was helped off the field and diagnosed with a head bruise, hip soreness and a jammed wrist and thumb. "All things considered, felt pretty good today," Sheets said prior to San Diego's road game against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. "Woke up, head felt good. Last night, I was obviously sore, mainly in the hip. But I woke up today, and all things considered for the play, I felt pretty good." The left-handed-hitting Sheets wasn't in the Monday starting lineup despite the Giants going with ace right-hander Logan Webb. Tyler Wade got the start in left. Sheets, 29, has been a major surprise for the Padres this season. He leads the team with 34 RBIs and ranks second with 11 homers. Sheets was non-tendered by the Chicago White Sox following last season and the Padres took a flier on him and signed him to minor league deal just before the start of spring training. Sheets made the team and quickly turned himself a key cog as a first baseman and designated hitter. He is batting .267 and slugging .494 in 54 games and was just recently asked to play left field because of his hot bat. "I'll do whatever -- whatever they want me to do," Sheets said. "Whatever gets me in the lineup, whatever they need me to do, I'll do." With Sheets avoiding a serious head injury, Padres manager Mike Shildt had fun with the situation in which the 6-foot-3, 235-pound utility man ran full steam into the wall. "I think the fence is OK," Shildt said. --Field Level Media
