Alliance City Council: Lohnes, Kelleher face off in Ward 3 Republican primary
ALLIANCE ‒ Dentist Ed Lohnes is seeking to represent Ward 3 for another term. He'll have competition for the Republican nomination. Lohnes, 56, faces political newcomer Logan Kelleher, 27, in the May 6 primary election. The winner faces Jessica Risaliti, 37, a Democrat, in November. She has no challenger in the primary election. Ward 3 is one of two contested races for City Council seats in the primary. Both are for Republican nominations. The current pay rate is $9,962.33. There will be an increase in 2026 to $10,161.57. The term is for two years. Alliance City Council: 4 candidates vie for 3 at-large spots in May primary The other contested race involves council-at-large. Lohnes: Alliance needs another industrial park Lohnes has been on City Council for five years. He is the chairman of the Finance Committee and has served as president pro tem. He helped guide the city from fiscal watch. He and his wife, Amy, have four children. He said he has "a track record of fiscal conservatism, stewardship of taxpayer dollars, able to work with those of diverse interests and able to build consensus to reach successful resolution on difficult issues." Ed Lohnes His community activities include membership in the American Dental Association, Ohio Dental Association, Stark County Dental Society and Stark County Community Action Agency Governing Board. He employs 10 at his dental practice of 29 years. Lohnes said he wants to see better communication with ulility companies, water departments and plumbing providers that serve Alliance. "Many times, citizens have seen a freshly paved road get excavated to repair shortly after being paved. Prior planning would preserve the resurfacing for a longer time," he said. Lohnes also wants the former McCaskey Register site to be declared a nuisance and to force the property owner to finish the demolition work or have the city seize it. The site has become blighted. Lohnes also said there should be mandatory performance bonds on commercial or residential demolition, "to prevent future McCaskey Register fiascos." Kelleher: He owns a company and is a former ironworker Kelleher owns Kelleher Industrial LLC and is a former ironworker. He is not married and has no children. "I want to run because I believe that it is time for a change," Kelleher said. "We were promised change, instead I believe we've had nothing but stagnation and animosity and division that has come from some of the current administration." Logan Kelleher Kelleher is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and said he volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and in other community service projects. "I consider my best quality is my honesty and integrity and my willingness to work with people," he said. He said the city needs more jobs in manufacturing and other industrial work that pay living wages. What is their position on rental regulations and ambulance transport services? The city's plans to regulate rental properties has dominated headlines, dividing the community and playing a role in the contested races for City Council. No new regulations have been enacted — yet. However, Lohnes is co-sponsor of Ordinance No. 015-25 that seeks a compromise and addresses most concerns rasied by all parties over the last 15 months. He said the legislation aims to make rent affordable and address blight by targeting only the "worst maintained" properties and not all rental properties. Kelleher said he opposes any rental regulations that require a registration fee and any ordinance that will "ultimately raise rents for Alliance residents." Another issue has been the city's contract with a private ambulance service to do patient transports to hospitals. The city has contracted with Emergency Medical Transport since 2018; however, the city's fire union has been pitching a proposal to share in the transports. The first attempt in 2023 was not successful. However, it is not a resolved issue, and the possibility of revisiting the fire union proposal has found new life. Kelleher said he would support the fire union proposal and said: "By restricting them and requiring privatized ambulance services only decreases the quality of care." He continued: "But it increases potential risks to patients and costs the residents of the City of Alliance a touch above $1.5 million per year." Lohnes supports the Emergency Medical Transport contract. He said the contract calls for three private ambulances to be stationed in Alliance at no cost the city or its residents, and the Alliance Fire Department serves as backup. "This issue has been discussed twice in my five years on council (and) each time it was determined that an AFD takeover of EMS is not financially feasible," Lohnes said. Incumbents cruising to victories in contested Alliance City Council races
ALLIANCE ‒ Republican incumbents are cruising to victory in two contested races in Tuesday's primary election for Alliance City Council. As of 9:20 p.m., a majority of precincts have reported unofficial results to the board of elections in Stark County and Mahoning County for both races. Kris Bugara (31%), Jennifer Kiko (26%) and Phillip Mastroianni (25%) were fending off challenger Rev. Joshua Smith (18%) for the three at-large seats. The winners face Jorge Mendoza, a Democrat, in the November general election. His party nomination was not challenged Tuesday. Election preview: Four candidates vie for 3 Alliance City Council at-large spots in May primary In Ward 3 - the other contested race - incumbent Ed Lohnes held a big lead against independent contractor Logan Kelleher for the Republican nomination. Lohnes had 77% of the vote with two of the three precincts reported. Kelleher had 23%. The winner will run against Jessica Risaliti, a Democrat, in November. Her party nomination also went unchallenged in the primary election. There were no votes cast in either race in Mahoning County. Election preview: Lohnes, Kelleher face off in Ward 3 Republican primary for Alliance City Council Leading up to the primary election, the city's plans to write new rental regulations over the last 18 months had been a major influence on council races. Smith, Kelleher, Mendoza and Risaliti jumped into the race over rental issues for different reasons. The city's plans were dropped last month and current codes were modified. The changes have only subdued opponents and supporters of rental regulations for the short-term. Mayor Andy Grove on Monday night released his proposed members for the new five-member Housing Oversight Board that was created by the code modifications. His choices - which are not final - didn't go over well with council members, landlords, tenants or even supporters of stronger rental regulations, like Mendoza and Risaliti. This year's NHRA Winternationals could be ‘fastest ever'
Racers and fans alike are out in full force at the Pomona Dragstrip this weekend for the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals motorsports competition. The competition consists of ten categories, including top fuel dragster, pro stock and fuel funny car races. Advertisement Cooler weather in the area for Sunday's races may make this year's Winternationals the fastest in the competition's 65-year history, according to lead broadcaster Brian Lohnes. Winning $515 million Powerball ticket sold in Southern California 'You have to think of it kind of like a marathon…if you want to run a marathon, you don't want it to be 90-degree weather – you want it to be cloudy and cool,' Lohnes told KTLA 5's Erin Myers. 'That's exactly what we're going to have…the cooler it is, the faster the cars go, and for 65 years we've run the Winternationals here, this could be the fastest one we've ever had.'
