Cooler weather in the area for Sunday's races may make this year's Winternationals the fastest in the competition's 65-year history, according to lead broadcaster Brian Lohnes.

'You have to think of it kind of like a marathon…if you want to run a marathon, you don't want it to be 90-degree weather – you want it to be cloudy and cool,' Lohnes told KTLA 5's Erin Myers. 'That's exactly what we're going to have…the cooler it is, the faster the cars go, and for 65 years we've run the Winternationals here, this could be the fastest one we've ever had.'
More information on the competition, including a full schedule of events for Sunday, can be found here.

Republicans keep winning streak alive at Congressional baseball game
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Republicans and Democrats faced off Wednesday night for the annual Congressional baseball game. Republicans won for the fifth year in a row. It's a friendly competition for a good cause. Organizers say they've raised more than $2.8 million dollars, a new record. The money goes toward charities serving children and families in the Washington, D.C., area. California Democratic Congressman Gil Cisneros says the game sets a good example for the country. 'Whenever we work together, whenever we do things together, it always shows something positive for the country,' said Cisneros. The game also marks eight years since Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise was shot at a Republican baseball practice. This year, he was first at bat. Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) says the friendly competition shows Americans things aren't as divided as they seem, even if just for a night. 'There's plenty of things to argue about tomorrow in Washington but tonight we're here for a good cause and it'll be a lot of fun,' said Schmitt. Organizers say they sold more than 30,000 tickets for the game. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Increasing Humidity Signals the Return of Weekend Rain
ST. LOUIS – St. Louis did not make it to 90 F Wednesday afternoon, but we made a good run. It was warm but overall pleasant, as the hot sun was filtered out behind some dense, high clouds. We say goodbye to the calm and quiet as we return to an unsettled Father's Day weekend. Thursday highs will be in the mid-80s as thicker clouds stream in amidst a slow-moving low coming out of Texas. The atmosphere is starting to saturate, and Thursday afternoon will see a slightly higher level of humidity than in previous days. Mainly cloudy skies with a few raindrops trying to get squeezed out of this same low as it approaches the Midwest and interacts with a stalled boundary to our north near central Iowa. 'No ICE' demonstration comes to STL We'll monitor more widespread, light rain to move in overnight Thursday into Friday, where the better rain chances for the weekend pick up. Friday will feature scattered showers and a few thunderstorms, especially with the heat of the day. This activity continues, but lessens, on Saturday before the system juts a little further east on Sunday. There is a possibility of a spot storm occurring during the daytime hours on Sunday, but we may experience more clouds than rain. That sets us up for an active, secondary round of daytime storms for next week as temperatures warm in the low 90s. This will be St. Louis' next best chance of reaching 90 F. Thursday, June 12 forecast: Rainy weather has returned
Hopefully you were able to make the most of the sunshine and warm weather we've experienced the past several days, because today isn't going to be another one. Scattered rain showers this morning will linger through the afternoon and into Friday. Download our KOLR 10 weather app Rain this morning is moving up from the southwest and expanding northeast across the Ozarks. Rain will be light to moderate and become more scattered in the afternoon today. So, not raining all the time, but rain is likely today. Given the slow nature of the storm system, a locally heavy downpour could lead to very localized flooding. The core of the storm will move through Thursday night into Friday. Pockets of heavy rain and embedded thunder will remain possible through the period. There will be just enough instability and wind energy to keep an eye out for an isolated severe weather risk. Locally heavy rain, however, is the main concern. The slow-moving system will move out on Saturday. Rain chances over the weekend, especially Saturday, look much lower with many areas remaining dry. Sunnier skies will also bring early summer heat back to the area. A more summer-like look to the pattern will be taking hold as we move into the following week. We can expect some pop-up showers and thunderstorms most days, but most areas will remain dry. Temperatures will creep higher at night and during the day. 90° will likely remain just out of reach for most areas, but we'll be getting close. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
