Mother of girl, 4, receiving treatment in L.A. speaks out against life-threatening deportation to Mexico
The mother of a 4-year-old girl who was born in Mexico and taken to L.A. two years ago is speaking out after the Trump administration ordered them to self-deport, despite her daughter receiving lifesaving care in America. Deysi Vargas told KTLA that her daughter Sofia (which is a pseudonym to protect her identity) may look like a healthy, happy child; however, she was born prematurely and suffers from short bowel syndrome, a condition that does not allow her body to absorb nutrients on its own. Vargas' young family was allowed to come to the U.S. in 2023 through a temporary humanitarian permission process so that Sofia, aged 2 1/2 at the time, could receive the care she needs to stay alive, which is not available in her native country. Suspect arrested, woman in coma after break-in at Beanie Babies tycoon's California mansion Specifically, Sofia requires intravenous nutrition 14 hours a day, and the family, who now lives and works in Bakersfield, drives down to Children's Hospital of Los Angeles every six weeks for treatment. 'She is living her life as normal as possible for a girl her age,' Deysi Vargas told KTLA 5's Carlos Saucedo in Spanish. 'It's all thanks to the medical treatment she's receiving in this country…this type of treatment doesn't exist in my country.' However, in the wake of the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration, Sofia's medical protection has been revoked, and now the Vargases must leave the U.S. on their own accord. Federal officials also canceled the parents' work permits, according to Gina Amato, directing attorney at Public Counsel's Immigration Rights Project. 'The federal government sent the family notices in April this year, canceling their humanitarian parole, which was otherwise valid until July,' Amato said. Amato added that doctors at CHLA are worried that if Sofia doesn't get the proper care, she will die. 'It's not speculative,' Amato said. 'It's that she will die within days.' 7 remain hospitalized days after Liverpool F.C. parade crash that injured at least 79 A concerned Deysi Vargas reiterated the life-or-death circumstances surrounding her daughter's future at a press conference held Wednesday morning in conjunction with the family's attorneys and with Sofia present. 'I am very scared because Sofia runs the risk of not receiving the treatment that she requires for her condition, and if we return back to our country, she would be back at the hospital day and night,' she said through a translator. 'I have a lot of faith…I believe in God and he has already blessed us with many miracles.' 'When we lived in Mexico, my daughter did not get any better,' she continued. 'Now, with the help that she's received in the United States, my daughter has the opportunity to get out of the hospital, know the world and live like a normal girl of 4 years.' Sofia uses special equipment to get nutrients throughout the day and night; she is connected to an IV for 14 hours and receives four feedings via a gastral tube throughout the day that take about an hour, according to a family spokesperson. The equipment is included in a special backpack that Sofia wears is part of the 14-hour treatment process, but she is still able to intake food with it. Amato explained Wednesday that CHLA's Intestinal Rehabilitation Program is one of the best in the world and treats approximately 200 children, but the main issue lies with the manufacturer of the equipment that Sofia needs to survive. Highly contagious COVID strain detected in CA amid vaccine crackdown 'The manufacturer of the equipment that delivers the intravenous nutrition is not available outside the United States,' Gina Amato said at the Wednesday press conference. 'The manufacturer will not allow the equipment to travel outside of the United States and that is why the treatment is not available outside of the U.S.' 'Deporting this family under these conditions is not only unlawful, it constitutes a moral failure that violates the basic tenets of humanity and decency,' Amato added. Family attorneys told KTLA that they have written to the Trump administration and made them aware of the case while also noting that the family has filed new documents for humanitarian parole; however, they have yet to hear back. 7 remain hospitalized days after Liverpool F.C. parade crash that injured at least 79
Video above: KTLA 5 breaking news coverage of the parade crash on Monday. A total of seven people are still in the hospital after a man plowed his minivan into a crowd of people celebrating at a championship parade for Liverpool F.C. on Monday. The Merseyside Police confirmed the information in a public update issued at 2 p.m. local time on Wednesday. 'As part of the ongoing investigation, we have also been able to identify more people who were injured, with 79 in total who we are now speaking with,' authorities said. LAFC is competing for the last spot in the FIFA Club World Cup against Club América: How you can watch for free Per a social media post from Merseyside Police, each of the seven people who remain in the hospital are in stable condition. The 53-year-old man, who has not been named, hails from Liverpool's West Derby neighborhood, law enforcement officials say. He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offenses and driving while unfit through drugs. He remains in police custody. A motive for the crash has not been established, but police say the driver acted alone and that the incident is not believed to be terrorism. '[On Wednesday], the investigation team [has] been granted further time to continue questioning him in police custody, which will remain in place until [Thursday],' Merseyside Police said. Girl, 4, receiving treatment in L.A. faces life-threatening risk of deportation to Mexico In Wednesday's update, Merseyside Police Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson stated that the number of people in the hospital is reducing in the days following the incident that took place on Water Street in downtown Liverpool. 'We continue to support those still receiving treatment and as part of our ongoing inquiries, we are identifying more people who were injured,' Wilson said. 'I want to reassure the public of Merseyside that detectives are making significant progress as we seek to establish the full circumstances that led to what happened.' Authorities are also reviewing 'extensive' CCTV footage to track the movements of the Ford Galaxy hatchback that was driven by the 53-year-old suspect. The parade was being held to celebrate Liverpool F.C.'s Premier League title. An estimated one million people were said to have come out to support and watch the 10-mile procession. Local media reports, citing a BBC reporter who was at the parade with his family, state that the open-top bus carrying the team had recently passed through the area when the car plowed through the crowd. Family of woman found dead in L.A. homeless encampment say questions remain This is not the first tragedy involving Liverpool F.C.; in 1985, the Heysel Stadium disaster occurred when Liverpool fans surged into an adjacent stand filled mostly with fans of Italian club Juventus before the start of the European Cup final. A total of 39 people died after being crushed against a wall that eventually collapsed, and a further 600 people were injured in the incident that occurred at the stadium in Brussels, Belgium. The disaster was blamed on hooliganism (14 Liverpool fans were convicted of manslaughter), mistakes by officials (one police captain was convicted of manslaughter) and structural issues with the stadium. Four years after the Heysel Stadium tragedy, the Hillsborough Stadium disaster occurred in Middlesbrough, England when local police mismanaged crowd control by letting an influx of supporters into two standing-only sections. The incident claimed the lives of 94 people on the day; a 95th died days later, an 18-year-old — who was left in a persistent vegetative state from the incident — died in 1993, and the 97th victim died in 2021, 32 years after suffering irreversible brain damage. Local high school marching band among millions traveling for Memorial Day weekend
Millions are set to travel for Memorial Day weekend this year in what's expected to be a record-breaking travel season (sound familiar?) and among those taking extra time as a precaution is the Loma Alta High School marching band. KTLA 5's Carlos Herrera was live at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Saturday morning, where he encountered the LAHS marching band – and some parent chaperones – bright and early at 6 a.m. The group was on their way to Washington D.C. to perform in the National Memorial Day Parade, set to take place on Memorial Day, May 26. A total of 52 students and parents were making the trek. Band director Joe Calderon said that planning the trip took a year-and-a-half. 'We are so excited to represent California as the band this year, and it's been a great experience,' he said. 'It took about a year-and-a-half of planning to get to this day, so we are super excited.' Miley Cyrus reveals filming music video on Walk of Fame gave her an infection Traveling with such a large group can be tough, especially during a busy travel period, and Calderon noted that while the lines weren't too long on Saturday morning, he knew he and his cohort – who aren't traveling lightly – couldn't take any chances. 'With the group check-in, you want to do everything together,' he said. 'You want to keep all the instruments together…we have oversized marching band equipment…there's a lot of logistics going on.' As for the students, one girl who plays 'all the saxophones' said she was very excited for the opportunity to represent California in the nation's capital; another student, a slightly more tired trombone player, remarked that the experience was 'cool.' After some 'Alta Loma' and even 'Megan Telles' cheers in the terminal, the group was off to their gate. According to AAA, more than 45 million people are will journey at least 50 miles from home during the Memorial Day holiday travel period (between Thursday and Monday), an increase of 1.4 million travelers from 2024 and a new Memorial Day record. WATCH: Burglars Ransack Bill Maher's Swanky LA Weed Shop
A cannabis dispensary and lounge co-owned by political pundit Bill Maher and actor Woody Harrelson was burglarized by a team of masked thieves. Surveillance footage posted to social media shows five hoodie-clad men smashing through a glass window to The Woods in West Hollywood and then haphazardly stuffing sacks with merchandise. The same video shows the crew hitting a different LA dispo that night, although the operation ran less smoothly. At ERBA Markets, which shares minority owners with The Woods, the robbers encountered an armed security guard, who quickly opened fire. The men can be seen fleeing the gun shots. They dove into a black SUV, which sped away. KTLA 5 reported that no one was hit and that the robbers were unable to take anything from ERBA. At Maher's and Harrelson's shop, however, they absconded with as much as $3,000 in merchandise, ABC 7 reported. 'They went in and they just randomly took stuff off the shelves,' Michael Berman, another co-owner, told the outlet of the Thursday robbery. 'While there was a lot of mess from the broken glass, nobody was hurt. They got merchandise, but they didn't actually damage too much inside.' The Los Angeles Police Department told the Daily Beast that the suspects are still at large and that an investigation into the incidents is ongoing. The Woods launched in 2022 with Harrelson, 63, as the majority owner and Maher, 69, as one of its minority owners. The tropical-themed shop sells a wide range of cannabis products and features several cabana-style lounges where patrons can get stoned. Maher, who hosts the HBO politics show Real Time, and Harrelson, known for starring in hits like Zombieland and The Hunger Games, have both emerged as high-profile advocates for the legal cannabis industry. Maher has made a habit out of smoking weed while recording his podcast, Club Random. Last year, Maher admitted to losing out on an interview with Jackass star Steve-O—who is long sober—because he refused to abstain from weed for the episode. Maher called Steve-O's request 'ridiculous.' In a 2024 interview with Los Angeles magazine—conducted at The Woods while Maher was high—he opened up about his marijuana habit. 'I don't smoke every day and never have,' he said. 'I'm a situational pot smoker. I would never get high to do Real Time. I can do stand-up high because I don't have to worry about a clock. I like it for sex. And I like it for writing.' Harrelson told CBS in 2023 that he became a proponent of cannabis despite a conservative upbringing—and against his mother's best wishes. 'She'd be sitting there, she'd have her coffee and cigarette and everything in the morning, you know,' he recalled of his mom. 'And she'd be like, 'Son, if I ever hear that you're smoking marijuana …it'll just kill me!'" Nevertheless, he's proud to own The Woods, calling it 'just a little dream of what a great dispensary could be.' Neither Maher or Harrelson has addressed the burglary publicly, and representatives for each did not immediately return the Daily Beast's requests for comment.
