Hamilton businesses come out on top in 2025 1Awards

Steeltown businesses have risen above the rest in the annual 1Awards competition for the second year in a row. The contest, hosted by FirstOntario Credit Union, gives local businesses in Hamilton, Halton, Brant, Niagara and the surrounding regions a chance to showcase their ideas as they vie for prizes of cash and in-kind services. Among the 10 contenders, Apothecary Kitchen, Electric Diner, Main Stage Rehearsal Studios, ImaginAble Solutions and Willard's Ice Cream gave the winning pitches — meaning they'll share the $200,000 in cash and professional in-kind services. 'Small businesses are the heart and soul of our communities and we're happy to continue to support them,' Joanne Battaglia, senior vice-president of marketing at FirstOntario, said in a statement. The winners of this year's 1Awards competition. From left, Kristy van Beek (Apothecary Kitchen); Charlotte Ross, Matt Willard and Sarah Rodenhizer (Willard's Ice Cream); Clara Fama, Emily Kawaguchi and Melissa Heyes (ImaginAble Solutions); Justin Dobbin and Kelly Ng (Main Stage Rehearsal Studios); and Erika Puckering and Jamie Ewing (Electric Diner). The finalists for the competition, now in its 13th year, included Me-Tour Inc. (Hamilton), Plan B Organic Farms (Hamilton), Premier Homecare Services London (London), Unbound Movement (Hamilton) and Food for Good Inc. (Niagara Falls). Here are this year's winners: This Hamilton Farmers' Market stall offers plant-based meals and zero-waste grocery items, such as soups, stews, salads and pastas. The menu also features smoothies, breakfast and dessert options and sides, as well as meal programs. This Hamilton company specializes in creating assistive technology to help improve the lives of those living with disabilities. Their product, Guided Hands, aims to assist those with limited hand mobility in doing everyday activities. This Steeltown eatery brings a retro flair to the city's dining scene, with '80s-themed menu items dotting its brunch, dinner, dessert and drink offerings. The restaurant also hosts trivia nights, dance parties and movie nights. This rehearsal space in downtown Hamilton spans more than 30,000 square feet and offers monthly and hourly studios, a showcase room and podcast and dance studios, as well as retail and equipment rental services. This east Hamilton ice cream shop focuses on small, handmade batches of ice cream, with a range of flavours from London Fog and toasted marshmallow to classic chocolate and vanilla bean. The facility is nut-free, and vegan options are available.

31 Versatile Travel Pieces For Traveling Light

A pair of high-waisted palazzo pants you'll be tempted to wear every. single. day. of your trip as they're just that freaking comfy. Reviewers also say they're super breathable and surprisingly wrinkle-resistant. A two-piece tank top and shorts set so you don't have to put any thought into putting a matching outfit together — the work has been done for you! A padded tank that 1) looks incredibly cute, and 2) eliminates the need for a bra. An off-the-shoulder jumpsuit with over 36,000 5-star ratings and rave reviews from flight attendants! A cropped quarter-zip sweatshirt if you LOVE blasting the AC in your hotel, so you need an extra layer to keep you cozy. A silky satin midi skirt with a silhouette that says "chic" and an elastic waistband that says "I'll give your most comfortable sweats a run for their money." A plain white Madewell tee you can wear again and again and again because there's really no wrong way to pair it. Like seriously, I'd like to see an outfit it doesn't make sense with?? Or a geometric tee that works just like any regular ol' tee but with ✨a little extra spice ✨in the form of a cutout. A Pashmina scarf ready to be fashioned into a blanket or pillow when flying; a wrap when you're cold or need something modest for visiting cultural sites like temples; or even a shield from the sun as it offers UPF 50+ protection! Some budget-friendly high-waisted leggings if you've sworn off jeans and any other bottoms without at least 5% spandex. A Levi's denim jacket that I won't even waste your time explaining. You and I both KNOW there's nothing more versatile. A two-piece lounge set you're certain to feel comfy and pulled together in because getting up at the crack of dawn for a 5 a.m. flight is *not* your forte, but it did save you a pretty penny. A pair of handmade huaraches with all the airflow of a sandal, but also the benefit of a closed-toe design if you have any vacation activities in mind that are more intense than suntanning on the beach. (Zip lining, anyone?) A classic London Fog trench you can throw on over anything and immediately look like you belong in whatever European city you're visiting. A stylish midi tank dress with straps wide enough to hide your bra so you don't have to waste any room packing a strapless option you absolutely detest wearing anyways. A classic crewneck sweater that is just the lightweight layer everyone needs when traveling. And best of all, when people ask about it, you get to say, "It's cashmere!!!" but also, "And it only cost $50!!!" An oversized hoodie with a built-in sleep mask that ensures some quality shut-eye whether you're traveling by plane, train, or automobile (most likely Lyft or Uber...). A seriously *stunning* slip dress you can gussy up or tone down. Wear it with heels and you've got yourself an evening dress, or pair it with a leather jacket and ankle boots for an impossibly cool city slicker look. A pair of Levi's Ribcage jeans that go where no low-rise jeans have ever gone before — up, up, up past your belly button. Or a pair of pull-on skinny jeans if you're someone who doesn't like leaving the house in something that could be considered loungewear but you do want to *feel* like you're wearing loungewear nonetheless. Thesus Weekend Boots — the ideal choice for adventure travelers everywhere thanks to their seam-sealed water-resistant upper, anti-slip rubber lug sole, and temperature-control lining. While they're perf for hikes and other demanding activities, the versatile design lends itself just as well to brunch, window shopping, and putzing around town. A simple flat that's easy to slip on and off at the airport and takes up next to no room in your bag, so you can go ahead and pack that sweater that you def won't need on your Caribbean trip if you do and then you regret not bringing it?? A pair of 100% European linen pants you *will* reach for day in and day out — and I say this from experience. (If you're my friend and you've seen me wear these two days in a row... no you didn't.) A trusty pair of Reebok Club C Doubles — the only shoes I'd save from a burning building if given the opportunity. They're comfy straight out of the box, and they pair with literally every outfit! Croc platforms that *may* just be cute enough to convert the Never Croc-er™ amongst us. They're ultra-comfortable, waterproof, and can take a serious beating, too, if you need to shove them in the exterior water bottle pouch of your backpack because you bought more souvenirs than anticipated. A ruched bodycon dress with a simple silhouette made more exciting by adjustable ties. Slip on some color-coordinated sandals or chunky sneakers and you're all done, bb! Some bike shorts you can wear on hikes, to the gym, or under dresses and skirts as an anti-chafing measure because your vacation average of 20,000 steps a day is no joke! A tiered maxi dress so comfortable and easy to wear, you will do the sniff test on it to see how many more times you can wear it before washing. A pair of flexible Birkenstock Essentials sandals that can be shoved in the last few inches of carry-on space you have without worrying about irreversibly damaging their form. A smart button-down maxi if your usual go-to is an oversized men's shirt and lived-in jeans. Look, when it's freakin' humid out, reaching for denim just isn't an option. And a Hackwith Design House shirt that can be worn ~six~ different ways so you can pack a capsule wardrobe and not have to lug around a large checked bag.

The cookbooks bringing us joy and changing our lives in the kitchen this spring

Spring's parade of cookbooks are bringing a lot of joy into our kitchens. We read, cooked and baked our way through dozens of them, finding respite in some newfound culinary wisdom. Ace L.A. baker Nicole Rucker of Fat + Flour gave us recipes from her new book for London Fog brownies and her signature vegan lemon lavender cookies, using simplified methods that turned her baking world around. Ari Kolender, the chef whose East Hollywood raw bar Found Oyster won us over with pristine seafood and clam shack charm, wrote 'How to Cook the Finest Things in the Sea' and helped us feel comfortable cooking all kinds of fish and shellfish. And along with chefs and other food lovers, we explored our own lived-in libraries, highlighting the cookbooks that have meant the most to us, the ones we most cherish, each for our own reasons. Here's what we're dog-earing right now. THE RECIPES THE RECIPES
