Siobhan Haughey's wish? A top-class Hong Kong swimming arena so she can race for home fans

Siobhan Haughey has said she hopes to see an elite-level swimming arena built in Hong Kong before she eventually retires, because she still holds ambitions of competing in her hometown. Advertisement Asked what the city's next major sporting development should be after last month's opening of the state-of-the-art Kai Tak Sports Park, the four-time Olympic medallist proposed an elite aquatics facility, adding that she craved the chance to swim in one. How many years Hong Kong has to make Haughey's wish come true is still to be determined, with the 27-year-old taking a wait-and-see approach to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Last Saturday, she began her preparations for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore in July and August, returning from a three-month break with 100 metres breaststroke victory in Hong Kong's Long Course Swimming Time Trial. It was held behind closed doors at Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI). 'I'm focusing on the Mare Nostrum [Swim Tour in May], the world championships and maybe the National Games [in November], then I'll go from there,' Haughey told the Post. I don't want to say I'm fully committed to Los Angeles yet. After this year, I will have a better sense of where I am, physically and mentally.'

Haughey facing ‘very long journey' back to her best, won't commit to 2028 LA Olympics

Hong Kong's four-time Olympic medallist Siobhan Haughey made a winning return to competitive swimming on Saturday, but said her journey back to the top was 'gonna be very long'. Advertisement The 27-year-old won the women's 100 metres breaststroke final at Hong Kong's Long Course Swimming Time Trial, coming home in one minute and 8.49 seconds. In second was 15-year-old Eunis Man Wui-kiu, with a personal best time of 1:09.38. Claire Cheung Wing-yi, 16, finished third in 1:11.31. Haughey said despite feeling 'mentally fresh', there had been a significant drop off in her times after a three-month break from a sport that has made her Hong Kong's most decorated athlete. 'It was tough, but it's good to be back,' Haughey said. 'The first few days of training felt great, and then suddenly it just hit me, I was like, 'Oh my goodness, I am so tired'.' After a 2024 campaign that saw Haughey win two 200m world titles and Olympic bronze in both the 200m and 100m freestyle, in December the Hongkonger revealed she would be taking a break to assess her future. Siobhan Haughey's Olympic swimsuit sells at auction for more than Phelps' Speedos

The swimsuit and cap worn by Hong Kong's Siobhan Haughey when she made history at the Tokyo Olympics have sold at auction for a huge sum, it has been revealed. Advertisement Haughey is this weekend poised to make her return to the pool after a three-month break, in Hong Kong's Long Course Swimming Time Trial. But her old kit has continued to notch up achievements for the 27-year-old during her time out, selling at Splash Foundation's 10th anniversary gala for a sum higher than that fetched elsewhere by the Olympic trunks of the great Michael Phelps. A winning bidder last month paid HK$180,000 (US$23,210) for the Arena Bishamon Carbon Glide suit and Hong Kong team cap worn by Haughey in Tokyo when she claimed the city's first Olympic medal in swimming, storming to silver in the 200 metres freestyle on July 28, 2021.
