Step into sustainable style: Sindiso Khumalo opens first flagship store in Cape Town

'The ultimate dream is to open my own store,' Sindiso Khumalo once told TRUELOVE. Straight from the internationally celebrated designer's lips to God's ears, Sindiso has officially launched the very first flagship store of her eponymous brand. Everyday shoppers will now get to see Sindiso's hand-illustrated prints, considered silhouettes and intentional design approach in person in Cape Town's Longkloof precinct. Sindiso says, 'Opening the store in Cape Town just made sense. It's where my family is, where my home is.' The store features designs and artwork from local creatives, as well as surplus tiles and repurposed furniture. This emphasises the brand's commitment to providing a platform for African creativity to shine and it's commitment to sustainability. 'I really wanted the space to tell a story of South African art and design. It really feels like me,' Sindiso says. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sindiso Khumalo (@sindisokhumalo) 'We took a lot of care into curating the space to reflect the story of the brand and to bring that story to life in a physical form. Everything you see in the store – the colours, the textures, the energy – is part of the world we've built with the brand.' The designer adds, 'I wanted every aspect of the space to be reflective of the work we do at Sindiso Khumalo. We've always worked with waste in a way that reimagines it as something beautiful, and I wanted that to be part of the store too.' Sindiso launched her namesake label in 2014 after completing her master's in textile futures at Central Saint Martins in London. After a pause to focus on raising her young children, she relaunched in 2018 and has since built a loyal following of customers who appreciate her slow, intentional approach to design. Since then, the LVMH Prize finalist and her fashion label have been featured at Milan Fashion Week and has worked with global brands like Vans, & Other Stories and IKEA. But no matter the accolades, authenticity has always been paramount to Sindiso's vision for her brand. But the person I was when I started my brand ten years ago is still who I am today. The LVMH Prize and other accolades have been wonderful, but my path has always been about expressing my voice and what matters to me. 'It's a continuous process – there's never really a moment where you feel like you've 'arrived' at the point of success. I studied at St. Martin's almost 20 years ago, and it's been a long journey since. Even now, I feel like I'm just getting started, always learning and growing within my craft.' The store launch also gives shoppers a new Sindiso Khumalo collection titled In Full Bloom, a line inspired by sisterhood and shared heritage.
