NETRMA awards safe driving scholarships to 10 East Texas students

TYLER, Texas (KETK) — The North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority (NETRMA) has awarded their fifth annual Linda Thomas Safe Driving Scholarships to ten local high school seniors. Tyler Police Department deploys extra officers for Memorial Day weekend The $2,000 Linda Thomas Safe Driving Scholarships were awarded to the following students based upon their safe-driving themed essays and their extracurricular achievements: Gregg County Carolyn Purdum – Longview High School Omika Patel – Longview High School Joe Ray – Sabine High School Smith County Sydney Hines – Lindale High School Parker Pierce – Bullard High School Wood County Daniel Kernes – Quitman High School Emilee Reed – Winnsboro High School Cass County Vincent Wong – Queen City High School Kaufman County MaKennah Duncan – Forney High School Bowie County Tristan Carter – Pleasant Grove High School 'The Linda Thomas Safe Driving Scholarship Program showcases the very best Northeast Texas has to offer,' NETRMA community relations chair Andrea Williams McCoy said. 'We are honored to play a small part in these exceptional students' educational journeys and look forward to following their successes through college, trade school and beyond.' The scholarship helps students understand and practice safe driving. Sydney Hines from Lindale even produced a short documentary called 'Just Five Beers' about the dangers of drunk driving and a woman named Cindy, whose daughter and mother died in a drunk driving crash in 1970. 'Winning this scholarship allows more people to see the film and to hear Cindy's story,' Hines said. 'Hopefully it encourages more people to make the right choices and to understand that drinking and driving is not ok, it will never be ok, and there are people out there who are affected by it every single day.' Longview High School honors seniors at first-ever Lobo decision day

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK)– Longview High School honored seniors a their first-ever Lobo decision day on Thursday, celebrating them for their post-graduation plans. Longview ISD said the halls of the high school were filled with drums, cheers and celebration as the Class of 2025 took stage at the first-ever Lobo decision day in tribute of them committing to college, careers, military service and the skilled trades. Longview ISD students get scholarships to University of Texas at Austin The morning started with seniors paraded through the hallways while staff, teachers and underclassmen cheered them on. The school said for many educators this day was especially emotional since it was a chance to witness the growth of the students they have supported throughout their high school career. 'This is more than a ceremony, it's a statement,' Longview High School Principal Shameika Allen said. 'Whether our students are headed to a university, a certificate program, the military or a career, they all deserve to be celebrated with the same excitement we give athletic signings. This is the start of a lasting tradition.' Photos courtesy of Longview ISD After the walk, seniors and their families gathered in the Mickey Melton Performing Arts Center for a signing ceremony with balloons, DJ music and custom slides projected on a large screen while seniors took stage based on their plans after high school. Each student had the opportunity to sign a decision day letter of intent while proudly sharing where they are heading to after graduation. Longview ISD offers $10K stipend for 'highly effective' elementary teachers To add to the celebratory moment, Longview ISD said that Superintendent Dr. Marla Sheppard spun a golden raffle drum to draw names for college supply crated filled with dorm essentials, made possible through student-led fundraising and community donations. 'Longview Lobo decision day is about celebrating our students' hard work and the bright futures aheadvof them,' Sheppard said. 'Every senior who signed a letter today represents perseverance, growth and the hope of what's possible. Today is a reminder that the path after high school is full of purpose, and every one of these students deserves this spotlight.' The decision day also included live scholarship presentations from donors with the total amount of scholarships being $5,360,136, including $4.49 million awarded to InternationalBaccalaureate students and over $150,000 in local scholarships coordinated through the school's College and Career Center. Longview ISD partners with Hispanic church to beautify school 'Being able to support Lobo Decision Day is a meaningful way to celebrate the hard work of these students and help set them up for success,' Director of the Longview ISD Foundation andScholarship Coordinator Kay Ray said. 'Watching students be recognized not only for where they're going, but for how far they've come, is a privilege.' The day ended with music, celebration and more photo opportunities as seniors finished with their letters of intent and 'enthusiastic support of their school community behind them.' Longview Lobo Choir honors veterans with performance, medals

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) – The Longview Lobo Choir held a ceremony where they sang to local veterans in honor of National Vietnam War Veterans Day on Saturday. Remarkable Woman Susan Campbell works to save veteran lives The ceremony was the choir's way of honoring veterans after they couldn't make it out to an event they planned to attend in Hawaii. 'We decided that we still wanted to honor that commitment, to honor the Vietnam veterans,' Longview Lobo Choir director Melody McMullen said. 'So we decided that let's do it locally instead of flying all the way to Hawaii to do it. I'm really glad that we're here doing this because we already have a pretty good turnout. I'm excited to get to, to meet some of these men that fought.' Each veteran who attended the event was given a medal and then turkey legs were served. Longview ISD students awarded full ride scholarships to University of Texas at Austin

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) — Two students at Longview High School were surprised on Friday after learning they had been awarded full ride scholarships to the University of Texas at Austin. Women's History Month: How Cup O' Joy spreads 'positvi-tea' while serving smiles with every sip In front of their parents, administrators and teachers, seniors Taylen Johnson and Oika Pate, were presented with a full-ride scholarship totaling $48,000. Their parents were so overwhelmed by the moment, they were brought to tears. Photos courtesy of Longview ISD UT admissions counselor Alely Zavala emphasized how rare it is for students from the same school to receive this kind of scholarship from UT. 'It is incredibly rare for two students from the same high school to receive this level of scholarship from UT Austin, which speaks volumes about the talent and dedication of Taylen Johnson and Omika Patel,' Zavala said. Once the ceremony concluded, those in attendance sang The Eyes of Texas and held up the university hand sign celebrating the beginning of this new exciting chapter for the students.
