After NGT order, power supply to 30 illegal dyeing units in Ghaziabad snapped

After the National Green Tribunal (NGT) took serious note of illegal dyeing units operating in Ghaziabad's Loni area, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) disconnected electricity supply to 30 such units, with the remaining seven to be cut off soon. The NGT also directed the Ghaziabad district magistrate to ensure these units do not resume operations. (For representation) The NGT also directed the Ghaziabad district magistrate to ensure these units do not resume operations. The units were allegedly discharging untreated polluted water directly into the Indrapuri drain, which flows into the Yamuna, and were operating without mandatory approvals. The order, passed on August 5 by NGT chairperson justice Prakash Shrivastava, Justice Sudhir Agarwal, and expert member A Senthil Vel, followed a petition filed by the Residents Welfare Association of Prem Nagar, Loni. The Tribunal ordered inspection of 286 industrial units under Loni Nagar Palika. 'The district magistrate, Ghaziabad, will ensure that a proper time-bound action plan is prepared to prevent the discharge of industrial effluent and untreated sewage into the Indrapuri drain, if the same has not been prepared till now,' the Tribunal said in its order. 'The DM will ensure a time-bound action plan within three months from today and will submit an action taken report before the registrar general of the Tribunal. If necessary, the matter will be listed for consideration before the bench,' the NGT added. The Tribunal had constituted a joint committee that carried out an extensive survey of all 286 industrial units in Loni and submitted two reports. The committee also collected water samples from four locations in Ghaziabad for testing. Of these, water samples collected from handpumps in Shri Shanti Digital, Arya Nagar, Ghaziabad were found polluted. The Tribunal also directed the Ghaziabad administration/regulatory agencies to carry out surprise inspections at regular intervals to ensure that no illegal dyeing unit operates in the area.

As civic chief & BJP members spar in Loni, Rs 100cr projects take a hit

Ghaziabad: Development projects worth over Rs 100 crore in Loni have been stalled amid a deepening political rift between Loni Nagar Palika chairperson Ranjeeta Dhama and the ruling dispensation. The delay, attributed to tenders not being opened, has mounted frustration among residents, who claim basic civic works, including fixing potholes on roads and cleaning clogged sewer lines, remain unfinished ahead of the monsoon. Dhama has accused officials within the Loni Nagar Palika of deliberately withholding approvals under political pressure. "There is a section of public representatives who cannot tolerate development work because it does not suit their political agenda," she said. Dhama staged a two-day protest last week, demanding that tenders be opened, and claimed she received an assurance that the process would soon resume. Caught in the crossfire are thousands of residents. "It's been more than four months, and nothing has moved," said Net Ram, a resident of Ward 20. "We were promised road and sewer repairs, but with monsoon just days away, we will have to wade through waterlogged streets this year too." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's Why So Many Americans Are Rushing To Install This Water Filtration System H2O Smart Home Solution Learn More Undo Ajay Choudhary, a resident of DLF Ankur Vihar, echoed the sentiment. "There is clearly a political tug-of-war going on. The chairperson and the MLA are trying to outdo each other, and we are the ones suffering." Loni, a dense and largely rural township bordering north Delhi, has long struggled with crumbling infrastructure, waterlogging, and overflowing drains. Its two main urban pockets — DLF Ankur Vihar and DLF Ved Vihar — face frequent complaints about clogged sewers, poor sanitation, and encroachment. MLA Nand Kishore Gurjar denied interfering in Nagar Palika affairs. "I do not meddle in the Palika's functioning," he said. "If work is stalled, the chairperson must answer why. She herself is facing allegations of financial mismanagement, and some councillors are opposed to her leadership." The administrative head of the civic body, executive officer KK Mishra, confirmed the delay but attributed it to procedural issues. "Some technicalities held up the tender process. We are addressing those and hope to begin work soon," he said. When asked about Dhama's allegations of political interference, he declined to comment. Dhama, once a BJP member, won the chairperson's post on an SP-RLD alliance ticket after defeating BJP-backed Pushpa Pradhan. Since her defection, tensions between her and the MLA have simmered, with the current impasse visibly stalling Loni's development.

UP BJP MLA seeks ban on animal slaughter, meat shops near Hindon Airport ahead of Bakrid

Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA Nand Kishor Gurjar Sunday wrote to the Ghaziabad police seeking a ban on animal slaughter, meat shops, and the operation of slaughterhouses near Hindon Airport in his constituency, Loni, on the occasion of Bakrid on June 7. Gurjar expressed concern about the potential threat of bird strikes to aircraft caused by open slaughter activities and highlighted issues regarding communal harmony in the area. In the letter, accessed by The Indian Express, he cited a survey by former Loni Nagar Palika executive officer D K Rai and said Loni, which is close to the Hindon Airport, comes under 'aircraft ordinance'. 'Under the ordinance, the slaughter of animals, the operation of meat shops, slaughterhouses and the collection of bones is prohibited. Doing this comes under the category of treason,' he said in the letter to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari. Gurjar also urged the Muslim community to celebrate Bakrid like they celebrated it last year in an 'eco-friendly' manner by cutting a cake in the shape of a goat. 'People of the Muslim community, by being a part of a progressive thought and also abiding by the rules of aircraft ordinance and for the benefit of Loni, celebrated an eco-friendly Eid and cut a cake in the shape of a bakra (goat), which was highly appreciated,' he said. 'In the past, a fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force had crashed in Loni. Apart from this, our party workers have been alerted that a large number of animals will be butchered in Loni. In that situation, some people can also kill cows to destroy the sensitive environment of Loni,' wrote the BJP MLA. He said the killing of animals is prohibited under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. 'I have also appealed to the brothers from the Muslim community that they become followers of a progressive thought… My party workers will also guard this with the help of drones,' he said in his letter. When contacted, DCP (Rural) Tiwari, however, denied receiving any letter from the MLA. 'We will look into this when we get it,' he told The Indian Express.
