Jasprit Bumrah released from India Test squad, BCCI gives big update in the middle of fifth Test against England
India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is not a part of the playing XI for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, has been released from the squad. The BCCI provided a key update on the 31-year-old ahead of the start of play on Day 2 of the Oval Test. Ahead of the series against England, it was already confirmed that Bumrah would just be playing three Tests due to workload management. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been released from the India Test squad.(PTI) Bumrah played the first, third, and fourth Tests against England. India's lone victory in the series came in the contest, and the pacer did not feature in the playing XI. Shubman Gill's India had registered an emphatic win in the Edgbaston Test by 336 runs. Bumrah was rested for this contest as Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna played as frontline pacers. In the three matches Bumrah played in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the pacer returned with 14 wickets. His best figures came in the Lord's Test, where he registered the figures of 5/74 in the first innings. As a result of this spell, the No.1 Test bowler got featured on the Lord's Honours Board. Bumrah had also returned with a five-wicket haul in the first innings of the series opener at Headingley, Leeds. However, his effort was not enough to help India win the first and third Tests of the series. In the fourth Test in Manchester, Bumrah's speeds were consistently down as he delivered in the 130-135kmph range. He was bowling well within himself, but, he was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he was able to choke the run flow. However, Siraj, Anshul Kamboj and Shardul Thakur leaked runs at the other end. Bumrah now has the most wickets for any Asian bowler in the SENA countries, as he went past Wasim Akram earlier in the series against England. India's updated squad for fifth Test: Shubman Gill (C), KL Rahul (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, N Jagadeesan (WK)

'I think its a doctors call': Raina on 'legend' Bumrah playing 4th Test at Manchester
Birmingham [UK], July 20 (ANI): Former Indian middle-order batter Suresh Raina hailed pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for his performances during the ongoing series against England away from home, calling him a "legend". He also said that the pacer playing the fourth Test is down to a "doctor's call" as his workload is under management following a lengthy injury lay-off. The availability of Bumrah, who is playing only three Tests during the ongoing series against England due to workload management, will be a big talking point as the team bus heads to Manchester for the fourth Test at Old Trafford. With the series being 2-1 in favour of England, there have been reports that Bumrah could feature in the fourth Test to give India a chance to level the series. Speaking to ANI at Birmingham, where he is due to his participation in the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL), Raina said about Bumrah playing the fourth Test, "I think it is a doctor's call to be very honest. I know my body. I know my doctor. I know what guidelines he is giving me, how to play the game." "So I think with Bumrah, I think he is a legend. I think he knows his body. He knows his workload, how to manage himself and look at his performance at Lord's, he registered his place in the Lord's Honours Board (with a five-wicket haul)," he added. Raina said that while a little rest is important for Bumrah since he is playing Test cricket after a long injury layoff following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia earlier this year, in the next Test, the team management would like to have him in the team. "Rishabh Pant had an injury on his finger to. So it is very important for both of them (to play fourth Test). If they have to draw the series or if they have to try to win the team, then I think it will be very important for both of them to feature in the fourth Test," he added. In two Tests so far, Bumrah has taken 12 wickets at an average of 21.00, with two five-wicket hauls and is the second-highest wicket-taker so far. Bumrah has been extremely prolific over last two years or so, winning the 'Player of the Tournament' award during T20 World Cup 2024 for his 15 wickets at an average of 8.26, taking a massive 32 wickets in five Tests during a dissappointing BGT for India in late-2024 to early 2025, even winning the first Test at Perth as a captain. He finished the year 2024 with 86 international wickets in 21 matches at an average of just over 13 and five five-wicket hauls. Speaking ahead of the fourth Test, Indian assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate said about Bumrah as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, "We will make that call (on Bumrah) in Manchester still. We know we have got him for one of the last two Tests. It is pretty obvious that the series on the line now in Manchester so there will be a leaning towards playing him," he added. "But again, we have got to look at all the factors: how many days of cricket are we going to get up there, what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game, and then how that fits in together with The Oval. And looking at the last two games holistically as part of the series," he continued. Pant has been the second-highest run-getter in the series with 425 runs in six innings at an average of 70.83, with two centuries and two fifties. His runs have come at a stunning strike rate of over 78. He faced an injury while wicketkeeping at Lord's. While Dhruv Jurel took up the wicketkeeping duties, Pant batted, scoring 74 and 9 despite his injury. Speaking on Pant, Ten Doeschate sounded hopeful, "He (Pant) will bat in Manchester before the Test. Look, I do not think you are going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what. He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test, and it is only going to get easier and easier on his finger. And keeping is obviously the last part of the process to make sure that he can keep. We do not want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through innings," he added. The assistant coach also hinted on Jurel, saying, "Jurel's in the equation, but I mean obviously if Rishabh's fit, he plays the next Test and does both," he noted. (ANI)

"Close To Perfection...": KL Rahul Receives Big Praise Despite Lord's Test Loss
Following India's loss to England in the third Lord's Test, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar hailed opener KL Rahul for his consistency in the series, saying that watching him bat is the "biggest satisfaction" he has received from the ongoing tour as an analyst and ex-cricketer. KL became the second Indian batter after Dilip Vengsarkar (three times) to register his name on the Lord's Honours Board more than once during the third Test, smashing his second century at the venue. However, his efforts were in vain as India lost the game by 22 runs, despite a commendable fightback from the lower-order and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja during chase of 193 runs. Speaking on 'Follow the Blues', JioStar expert Sanjay said KL has worked on grey areas in his technique. "The biggest satisfaction I've had -- as an analyst and a former cricketer -- has come from watching KL Rahul. He has always had the game. Yes, there were grey areas in his technique, but he worked on those and resolved them. What was missing was consistency," he said. "On one of our shows, we even jokingly gave him the title of 'Mr. Consistent KL Rahul' -- but it has taken him a long time to truly earn that tag. He has now played over 50 Test matches for India, and what I am seeing now is close to perfection -- there are no visible weaknesses. For the first time in an overseas series, he has scored more than 200 runs. That, for me, is a massive takeaway for India," he concluded. In the ongoing series, KL has scored 375 runs in three matches and six innings at an average of 62.50, with a best score of 137, two centuries and a fifty. He is the fourth-highest run-getter in the series. This series has greatly improved his batting average in England, taking it from 30s to early 40s. In 12 Tests in England, he has made 989 runs at an average of 41.20, with four centuries and two fifties in 24 innings. His best score in England is 149. Despite his technical ability and shot range, KL has received flak for his inconsistency, reflected in a Test average of 35.26 after 61 Tests, scoring 3,632 runs in 107 innings, with 10 centuries and 18 fifties. However, he is India's one of most dependable batters outside Asia in spite of ups and downs in his form, as nine of his ten Test tons have come away from home. Most importantly, seven of his Test centuries have come in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia (SENA) countries, with a century in Australia and two in South Africa. KL's overall Test record against England is also solid, with 1,330 runs in 16 matches and 30 innings at an average of 44.33, with five centuries and three fifties, with a best score of 199. With two matches remaining, KL has every chance to make this series his best-ever in Test statistically. His best Test series has been the 2016-17 series against Australia at home, with 393 runs in four matches and seven innings at an average of 65.50, with six fifties to his name and best score of 90. Coming to the match, England won the toss and opted to bat first. England was reduced to 44/2, but a 109-run stand between Ollie Pope (44 in 104 balls, with four boundaries) and Joe Root (104 in 199 balls, with 10 fours) and a counter-attacking 84 run stand for the eighth wicket stand between Brydon Carse (56 in 83 balls, with six fours and a six) and Jamie Smith (51 in 56 balls, with six fours) took England to 387. Jasprit Bumrah (5/74) was the highlight for India with the ball. In the second innings, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early, but a 61-run stand between Karun Nair (26 in 46 balls, with five fours) and KL Rahul and a 141-run stand between KL (100 in 177 balls, with 13 fours) and Rishabh Pant (74 in 112 balls, with eight fours and two sixes) took India close to England's score.A brilliant half-century from Ravindra Jadeja (72 in 131 balls, with eight fours and a six) and lower-order contributions from Nitish Kumar Reddy (30) and Washington Sundar (23) took India to 387, with nothing separating the sides. Chris Woakes (3/84) was the top bowler for England in this innings. In England's second innings, India continuously kept England under pressure, except for a 67-run fifth wicket stand between Root (40 in 96 balls, with a four) and Stokes (33 in 96 balls, with three fours). Sundar (4/22) delivered a game-changer spell, running through the middle-order and bundling out England for 192. India was set 193 to win. During the run-chase, Team India was reduced to 82/7. However, Jadeja (61* in 181 balls, with four boundaries and a six) was not in a mood to give up. He put up resilient partnerships with the lower-order batters that put England under tension, but Mohammed Siraj's unlucky dismissal, where the ball spun back to the stumps following its landing on the pitch, hurt a million hearts as India was bundled out for 170. India trails 1-2 in the series. Stokes won the 'Player of the Match' for his handy knocks of 44 and 33 and a total of five wickets in the match, including a three-wicket haul taken in the second innings in tandem with Jofra Archer, who also got three wickets.

Rishabh Pant Backed To Surpass Adam Gilchrist, MS Dhoni As 'Greatest Wicket-Keeper' Only If...
Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwari was full of praise for team India vice-captain Rishabh Pant and believes if he continues his own unique style of cricket, he will go down as the greatest wicketkeeper in history. Pant has burst onto the scene in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, racking up 416 runs in just five innings so far, including two centuries at Headingley. 'Rishabh Pant is unique, he has his own style of play. His thinking and approach are different to batters which causes an unpredictable contest between the batters and bowlers. He sometimes does throw his wicket which causes criticism but his success rate is high. If a wicket-keeper is contributing 100 runs, historically Indian wicket-keeper batters have not been successful with the bat. 'We have had some great keepers like Adam Gilchrist, who was great behind the stumps and with the bat, in Indian conditions, we had MS Dhoni but I believe if he continues to play like this, he will go down as the greatest wicket-keeper in history,' Tiwari told IANS. Pant is currently the second-highest run-scorer in the ongoing five-Test series behind skipper Shubman Gill. The young captain broke a plethora of records against England at Edgbaston and has already scored 601 runs so far. The former India batter attributed Gill's change in technique which has helped him overcome his struggles against the in-swinging balls. "Gill is in very good form and has made some technical adjustments. In earlier Test matches, he used to get bowled by incoming deliveries but he has worked on closing the gap between bat and ball. The benefit for that is he is able to play straight down the wicket. He is in control and in great form. It seems like he has added the responsibility of being a captain while betting. It is great to see a young batter lead the team,' Tiwari said. The Lord's Test also marked the return of the No.1 ranked bowler Jasprit Bumrah to the Indian side. The fast bowler missed the Edgbaston Test owing to workload management and replaced Prasidh Krishna in the side. The 31-year-old rewarded the Indian fans by claiming figures of 5-74 which also etched his name on the Lord's Honours Board. Tiwari spoke of the influence that Bumrah has on the India team. 'When Bumrah is playing, he is usually the best performer on the field. The form with which he is bowling it seems he will continue to trouble the batters. His ability with the ball and his IQ on the field is amazing. He has been India's main man across all formats. When he is in the team, the self-belief of the side is much more,' Tiwari said.
