Michael Harvey: Man who attempted to murder woman while on date in Glasgow jailed for nine years
A man who attempted to murder a woman while on a date has been jailed for nine years. Michael Harvey, 32, was captured on CCTV brutally assaulting his then partner in Glasgow city centre in 2023. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said the vicious assault left the woman in an induced coma suffering from severe head injuries. At the High Court in , judge Lord Colbeck said the victim impact statement set out the "devastating consequences" of the violence. He stated: "As a result of your attacks upon her, [the victim] suffered life-changing severe injuries, permanent impairment and permanent disfigurement." COPFS said prosecutors were able to demonstrate Harvey's "savagery and duplicity" with video and audio recordings that showed how he subjected the woman to an "ordeal spanning several hours". The assault was captured on CCTV, which included the woman having her head hit against a bus stop and being dragged along the ground, causing her to lose consciousness. Harvey was also filmed shouting aggressively and gesticulating wildly at the victim over the course of the night out. Despite being taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary following the initial attack, Lord Colbeck noted how the victim left the hospital without being seen by medics. In the early hours of the morning of 1 October 2023, hotel footage showed Harvey carrying the badly injured victim towards a room they had booked, where once again she was attacked until she lost consciousness. Harvey, from Cambuslang in South Lanarkshire, was later recorded in a call to the Scottish Ambulance Service and can be heard pretending the woman had fallen in the shower. Lord Colbeck stated: "Lying to others about what had happened to [the victim] was calculating and self-serving." Read more from Sky News: Harvey denied any wrongdoing but was last month found guilty of two charges - assault to severe injury, permanent disfigurement, impairment, danger to life and attempted murder; and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. Lord Colbeck noted Harvey's lengthy criminal record, which comprised 26 previous convictions and two custodial sentences. He was also found to be the subject of a community payback order (CPO) at the time of his attack. The judge stated: "None of your previous convictions involve similar offending to that now before the court - the current offences being a marked escalation in your offending behaviour." Harvey was sentenced to nine years in jail and banned from contacting his victim when he returned to the dock on Friday. Prosecutor Moira Orr, the national lead for homicide and major crime at COPFS, said: "Over the course of an evening, Michael Harvey used appalling violence and threats to exert brutal control over a woman who had gone on a date with him. "CCTV enabled our prosecutors to share significant evidence of his brutality and threatening behaviour which was exhibited in public view as well as in private. "Our thoughts are with the woman who has suffered such terrible trauma and injuries but whose bravery has contributed so much to this prosecution. "Violence against women and girls is a blight on our society. As this case shows, abuse can go on in plain sight as well as behind closed doors. We must all be vigilant."

Paramedic who secretly gave woman drug to abort their child jailed for 10 years
A paramedic who caused a pregnant woman to miscarry after secretly putting abortion drugs inside her during sex has been jailed for ten years. Stephen Doohan, 33, from Edinburgh, researched the topic of abortion online after the woman told him she was pregnant. Doohan, who worked for the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS), was married when he met the woman on holiday in Spain in 2021 and began a long-distance relationship. In March 2023, the woman travelled to Edinburgh to see him after learning she was pregnant, the High Court in Glasgow heard. On March 17, Doohan inserted an abortion drug in her vagina without her knowledge during consensual sex, and the following day insisted on seeing her underwear after she noticed white discharge, the court heard. Doohan had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault and depositing a drug into her vagina causing her to abort, and depositing with intent to cause her to abort. On Monday at the High Court in Glasgow, he was sentenced to ten years and six months in prison. The court heard that while off-duty, Doohan checked for information about the drug on a work system just two days before he first gave it to the victim. He convinced the woman to lie to medics at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary because he thought he would be arrested if she told the truth. The victim attended another regional hospital with her sister and was told that she was having a miscarriage. The court heard that in May 2023, the woman complained to the SAS, which launched an investigation. During sentencing, Judge Lord Colbeck said that Doohan had told the victim that he did not want children, but she later became pregnant. He said the victim's suspicions were raised after discovering the unusual discharge in her underwear and suffering stomach cramps. The judge said she returned to Doohan's flat and looked under his mattress when he went to the toilet, where she found some tablets. Lord Colbeck added: 'The complainer then carried out an internet search for abortion tablets and confronted you over your actions.' Defending, Mark Stewart KC, said: 'I express Mr Doohan's deep sorrow and regret for the actions he is now in the court charged with. 'His position is that he is filled with remorse for the harm he has caused, and the breach of trust his actions represented.' The court heard that Doohan had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and that he had no previous convictions. Mr Stewart described Doohan's life as 'positive and useful'.

Twisted BBC paramedic jailed for forcing abortion drugs into woman during sex
A sick paramedic who tricked a woman into having an abortion by secretly putting drugs inside her during sex has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars. Stephen Doohan, who previously featured in the BBC documentary series Paramedics on Scene, was married when he met the woman on holiday in Spain in 2021 and began a long-distance relationship. In March 2023, the woman travelled to Edinburgh to see him after learning she was pregnant, the High Court in Glasgow heard. On March 17, 33-year-old Doohan inserted an abortion drug into her vagina without her knowledge during consensual sex, and the following day insisted on seeing her underwear after she noticed white discharge, the court heard. Doohan had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault and depositing a drug into her vagina causing her to abort, and depositing with intent to cause her to abort. Today, he was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison at the high court in Glasgow. Sentencing, judge Lord Colbeck said: 'You put her through considerable pain over a number of days, and left her facing a lifetime of pain and loss.' He also said Doohan caused 'long-term psychological injury' to his victim. The court heard that Doohan convinced the woman to lie to medics at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary because he thought he would be arrested if she told the truth. The victim attended another regional hospital with her sister and was told that she was having a miscarriage. The court heard that in May 2023, the woman complained to the Scottish Ambulance Service, which launched an investigation. It revealed that on March 14, the day the woman told Doohan she was pregnant, he used a work intranet to search for abortion drugs, and the police were then called in. The court heard that the crimes occurred over 48 hours, at Doohan's flat in Edinburgh. Lord Colbeck said that Doohan had told the victim that he did not want children, but she later became pregnant. The judge said: 'She took some diazepam and went into a deep sleep, and felt you initiating sexual contact. She felt you inserting something hard from under the mattress. She was suspicious of your actions. 'When you went to the bathroom, she took the opportunity to look under the mattress.' The woman found some tablets hidden under the mattress, the court heard. Lord Colbeck added: 'The complainer then carried out an internet search for abortion tablets and confronted you over your actions.' The court heard that Doohan 'rehearsed what she was to say' before they attended hospital in Edinburgh due to stomach cramps on March 18, and the day after, she attended a regional hospital with her sister so she could 'disclose' what had happened, but was told she was having a miscarriage. Lord Colbeck said: 'You planned out what you did to your victim using resources available to you as a paramedic.' Defending, Mark Stewart KC, said: 'I express Mr Doohan's deep sorrow and regret for the actions he is now in the court charged with. His position is that he is filled with remorse for the harm he has caused, and the breach of trust his actions represented.'

Sex attacker faces life sentence after raping woman he met on Tinder
The 34-year-old ex-clothes shop supervisor denied being physically or sexually violent - even claiming in a bizarre video clip that the woman had instead hurt him. Hood was found guilty of rape and engaging in a course of abusive behaviour following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. He is already serving a seven-and-a-half-year jail-term imposed in 2022 for preying on four other women. Hood was due to be sentenced for this latest crime as he returned to the dock this week. But, judge Lord Colbeck continued the case again for a full risk assessment to be carried out on the sex attacker. This could eventually lead to an Order for the Lifelong Restriction being imposed on him. Hood is scheduled to be back in court in September. Read More Hood, formerly of the city's Knightswood, told jurors how he was initially in contact with the woman via Tinder. He stated he had never used the dating app before as "you hear all these horror stories". It was not until early 2020 that the pair physically met. He had been aware at the time of allegations made by one of the victims in the later 2022 trial. Hood claimed he told the woman in this latest case about the then accusations. He said there was "not much reaction" from her. Hood went on to move in with the woman and her mother at their home in the west of the city during one of the covid lockdowns in 2020. He said: "It was a bit intense, but we managed it well." Hood insisted there was "seldom" any sexual contact between him and the victim while there. The woman, however, told how he stood on her face and then forced himself upon her during one attack. Denying it happened, Hood claimed: "We would not really do much in her mum's house as it was just awkward." The abuse also took place at other flats in the north of Glasgow. His lawyer Frances Connor put to him at one stage: "Any truth that you wanted cocaine so you could have sex for hours and hours?" He refuted this insisting the drug would have had the "opposite effect" on him. Miss Connor also asked if anything had occurred without the woman's consent. Hood again denied this. The lawyer went on: "Anything ever happened when she was asleep?" He then claimed: "No, I would never have woken her up as she was a grouch if you did." Hood added any evidence of him "choking" the woman only happened during consensual sex. The attacker was also physically abusive which had included a claim he had hurled Chinese spring rolls at her. He instead alleged the woman had previously "erupted" at him after confronting him about cheating on her. Jurors were shown a mobile phone clip recorded by the woman where a drunk and topless Hood claimed he could not walk as she had "broke" his toe by allegedly throwing a towel at him. In the previous trial, Hood had been convicted of 10 charges of similar abuse against four women between 2010 and 2020. His lawyer said at the time how his life had been "somewhat blighted by a gambling addiction" which had affected his relationships. He first faced allegations involving the latest victim in 2023 while serving the seven-and-a-half-year sentence.
