Exiles reign again in Croke Park thriller

London edge Derry in a pulsating Christy Ring Cup final to claim their second title and promotion to the Joe McDonagh Cup. The Exiles secured a narrow three-point victory with the game coming down to the final puck, winning out on a score line of 1-27 to 1-24 over Derry, who face the misfortune of being beaten in the decider for the third year in a row. London were led by new recruit and Westmeath native Davy Devine, who scored 1-12 and moved to London recently, having previously lined out for Warwickshire in the Lory Meaghar Cup. The Exiles settled into their rhythm right away, with Conor McCormack getting his name on the scoresheet within thirty seconds of the throw-in. David Devine followed up with a well-taken free to give London an early two-point lead. Son of the legendary Sambo, Christy McNaughton arrowed Derry's first score of the game before Tom Millerick and David Devine stretched London's advantage to 0-4 to 0-1 by the fourth minute. Cormac O'Doherty and Richie Mullan cut the London lead to the minimum. Thomas Brady and Cahal Murray added further scores for the Derry men between a Sean Glynn point to have the sides level at 0-5 apiece by the eleventh minute. Two minutes later, Glynn made an explosive run from his own half before laying the ball off to Devine, who batted the ball into the empty net to raise a green flag for the exiles. Such was the nip-and-tuck nature of the game that Thomas Brady went right up the other end of the field and drilled a cross field ball to Cahal Murray, who rifled his shot spectacularly into the top corner. Devine and Enda Egan raised white flags for London before Shea Cassidy and Cormac O'Doherty followed suit to equalise the game by the eighteenth minute. MIDFIELD CLASH OF THE ASH: Shea Cassidy of Derry in action against Conor Byrne (photo By Stephen Marken/Sportsfile via Getty Images) London held a 1-15 to 1-12 lead at the break, but a spirited Derry side clawed their way back after the restart, drawing level at 1-19 each in the 52nd minute thanks to a third point from Cushendall's McNaughton. That set the stage for a dramatic finish. London responded emphatically, rattling off six unanswered points in the final to take command, only for Derry to hit back with four of their own. Eamon Conway was influential for Derry in the second half and landed their final point in the 71st minute, narrowing the gap to a single point. But London held firm. Two injury-time scores from Devine pushed the margin to three, sealing the win. Derry had one last chance with a free deep in stoppage time, but O'Doherty's fierce effort was blocked on the line, and the resulting 65 came to nothing, denying them the goal needed to force extra time. Laois break Carlow hearts with last-gasp leveller to book Joe McDonagh final spot

Laois are headed back to the Joe McDonagh Cup final after they broke Carlow's hearts deep into stoppage time at Netwatch Cullen Park on Saturday. James Duggan got the faintest of touches on Pádraig Delaney's 65 with the last play of tense local derby, levelling the game at Laois 1-20 to Carlow's 2-17. 2 Laois scored a late leveller against Carlow in dramatic fashion to seal a Joe McDonagh final place 2 Kildare will face Laois in the final after the overcame Down on Saturday afternoon And that meant the sides were level on points and so Laois advance to the final in a fortnight thanks to their superior scoring difference. The contest also started with a goal, this time for Carlow's Chris Nolan, and they soon led by four points. Tomás Keyes led the way for Laois as they rallied to get back to within a point by half-time, but a second Carlow goal, this time for Paddy Boland, put the home side on the front foot again. Keyes kept knocking over dead ball scores however, racking up 0-14 in all, and that left the O'Moore County close enough to deliver their late, killer blow. read more on gaa The challenge facing Laois in that final will be to upset a Kildare team that is full of momentum and confidence. The Lily Whites needed a fourth win in succession to reach their first ever Joe McDonagh final and they did that in style at St. Conleth's Park, slashing through Down by 1-26 to 1-14 The first eight points of the game were equally shared but Kildare hit the turbo and left Down trailing their slipstream over the next 20 minutes, taking a 1-14 to 0-7 lead into the break. Cathal McCabe, Simon Leacy and Cian Boran were dominant around the middle third, Daire Guerin set up David Qualter for a goal – Qualter finished with 1-13 – and the result was settled long before Shea Pucci struck a late consolation goal for Down. Niall O'Brien hit an early goal for Westmeath who were 1-15 to 1-3 ahead before a couple of Pádraig Boyle points before half-time gave Kerry the faintest sliver of hope. Sharlene Mawdsley encounters unexpected headache on first trip abroad since GAA boyfriend reveal Five minutes into the second half Killian Doyle had two more points as he moved on towards a tally of 0-15, teenager David O'Reilly added 1-1, and Kerry's relegation was inevitable. New York's inclusion in the Lory Meaghar Cup was controversial as the Exiles were seen by many as far too strong for the bottom tier of the intercounty hurling structure. A 1-29 to 2-13 win over Monaghan in yesterday's semi-final in Mullingar won't do anything to dispel those rumours. AJ Willis, part of a strong Tipperary contingent on the New York side, scored 1-9 while David Mangan hit 0-10, with former Galway star Johnny Glynn orchestrating play once he moved outto midfield. New York will now play Cavan in the final on Saturday in Croke Park.

Carlow overcome Westmeath in Joe McDonagh Cup thriller while Down secure relegation lifeline vs Kerry

CARLOW will travel to Laois next weekend with their fate in their own hands in the Joe McDonagh Cup after overcoming WESTMEATH 7-23 to 4-22 in Mullingar yesterday. The Barrowsiders had stormed into the break with an 18-point lead and would go on to stretch their advantage with another Marty Kavanagh goal in the first minute of the second half. The Lake County took over in the rest of the third quarter, outscoring the visitors by 2-13 to 0-3 before James Doyle and Fiachra Fitzpatrick added green flags to see out the win, with Kavanagh hitting 3-12. Meanwhile, in Ballycran, DOWN secured themselves a lifeline in their battle against the drop with a 2-26 to 2-19 victory over KERRY. And DERRY laid down a marker in the Christy Ring Cup after they swept WICKLOW aside 2-30 to 1-13 at Celtic Park. The emphatic win ensured top spot in the table for the Oak Leafers, and a Croke Park showdown against LONDON. In Trim, DONEGAL and MEATH played out a dead rubber with Mickey McCann's men edging past the Royal County 0-28 to 3-14. In the Nickey Rackard Cup, FERMANAGH got their first point of the season with a 1-22 to 3-16 draw against MAYO, who have already booked their place in the final. Meath set for Christy Ring hurling again next year

Barring a miracle, Meath will spend back-to-back seasons in the Christy Ring Cup for the first time since it became the third-tier competition in the intercounty hurling system. Wicklow's 3-17 to 0-16 win over Meath has left the Royal County all but eliminated from a competition where they would have started as the clear favourites. They now need London to draw with Tyrone, Wicklow to beat Derry and for a 36-point swing in scoring difference to occur between them and the Oak Leaf men. Such was their showing in Aughrim that they'll know that they simply weren't where they needed to be this summer. John Toomey goals at the start and finish of the first half gave Wicklow a four-point interval lead when the breeze had favoured Meath in the opening half and The Garden County duly backed up their strong foundation by dominating the second half, clinching their win through a Pádraig Doyle green flag. With Tyrone's relegation confirmed following their loss to Derry, Donegal will have nothing to play for next week after they succumbed to a 2-19 to 1-15 loss to London in Letterkenny. Goals from Jack Morrissey (penalty) and Cathal O'Carroll in the first half set the Exiles on the road to their win and a run of five points in succession midway through the second half briefly stretched the lead out to nine before Danny Cullen found the net for the hosts with three minutes remaining. In the Nickey Rackard Cup, Mayo are into the final after Shane Boland (0-9), Liam Lavin (0-5) and Ryan Duffy (0-4) filled their boots in a 1-32 to 1-17 win over Sligo, while Roscommon are in the driving seat to join them after they condemned Fermanagh to relegation back to the Lory Meagher with a 4-27 to 0-22 win at Dr. Hyde Park, where Robbie Fallon's two goals and Brendan Mulry's 0-8 from play did the lion's share of the damage. With Roscommon and Sligo level on points after having already drawn, the Rossies have a ten-point scoring difference advantage going into the last round of games, while they will also travel to Louth who have nothing to play for, while Sligo will host an Armagh side that aren't mathematically out of the running, albeit they will need to win, and for Louth to beat the Rossies. Four points each from play from Leon Fox and Mark Gahan looked to have put Louth in position to snatch a win as they led by 0-19 to 1-14 going into stoppage time, but a Barry Shortt point and a late goal from Steve Keenan kept the Orchard County's slim chances alive. There were no surprises in the Lory Meaghar Cup on Saturday as Monaghan beat Lancashire by 4-14 to 2-14 at Abbotstown and Cavan had another big win over the border in Longford, 3-29 to 3-17, with Liam O'Brien scoring 0-13 and Jack McGuinness striking five from play from midfield as the Breffni men are now assured of a final spot. Monaghan need to win or draw in Inniskeen next Saturday against Longford to take second spot, and with it a semi-final clash with New York. On Sunday, Leitrim's faint chances in the competition were extinguished in Birmingham, where Jack Grealish and Luke Hands got the first half goals that set Warwickshire on their way to a 2-17 to 0-18 win over the Connacht county.

Hurling round-up: Cole fires Meath past Derry as London and Wicklow draw

Two razor-tight battles between Christy Ring Cup contenders ended with Meath picking up a crucial victory over Derry and gaining ground on the Oak Leaf County and both London and Wicklow, who played out a 2-17 each draw in Aughrim. A pair of Mikey Cole goals in the first half, both from long deliveries out of defence, were the difference at the end of 35 minutes in Celtic Park, when Meath led their hosts by 2-9 to 0-9. A blistering start to the second half saw Derry hit three points in a row before Damien Healy netted for Meath and Shéa Cassidy replied in kind for the home side, but they could never quite get on level terms and with the scores at 3-17 to 1-22, Cormac O'Doherty and Ruairí Ó Mianáin both missed late opportunities that would have ensured a share of the spoils. London's Donnacha Leahy didn't waste his chance to tie up the teams in Aughrim, as the former Blackrock (Limerick) man split the uprights in the second minute of stoppage time to deny Wicklow a third consecutive win in this competition. The Exiles held an early lead after David Devine and Jack Morrissey found the net midway through the first half, but Luke Evans netting for Wicklow reduced the gap to five by the interval, and they were clearly the better team in the second half. Evans' second goal on 41 minutes made it a nip and tuck contest and with 13 Wicklow players getting on the scoresheet by the end, it looked as if they had done enough when Warren Kavanagh nudged them into the lead with the first minute of added time played. It was much more straightforward at Carrickmore where Josh Connolly McGee (3-2), Declan Coulter (1-4), Luke White (1-1) and Gerry Gilmore (0-5) all filled their boots in a comprehensive 3-18 to 0-10 win for Donegal over Tyrone. It was a Connacht double in the two Nickey Rackard Cup games played this afternoon, with Mayo accounting for Louth by 2-24 to 2-18 in Castlebar while Sligo crushed Fermanagh by 7-20 to 2-18 in Enniskillen. Leon Fox scored two goals for Louth with Darren Geoghegan scoring freely from dead balls while Kieran McDermott and Sioman Thomas were Mayo's goalscorers in a game that was in the balance, 2-18 each, with 67 minutes played. Ryan Duffy, Shane Boland, Eoin Delaney, Daniel Huane and McDermott contributed to a run of six points in a row at the end of the game however, ensuring Mayo's third win of the campaign from three starts. Fermanagh actually led by two points (2-10 to 2-8) at half-time in Brewster Park but Andrew Kilcullen bagged 4-7 for Sligo including three second half goals, with Conor Griffin also striking a brace and Fergal O'Kelly Lynch adding a seventh late on for the rampant Yeats County. In the Lory Meaghar Cup, Cavan continued their excellent run of form with Liam O'Brien (0-10), Seán Keating (1-4) and Nicky Kenny (1-3) topping the scoring charts in their 3-24 to 2-14 win over Lancashire, while Monaghan beat Warwickshire 4-22 to 2-15 and it finished level in Pearse Park between Leitrim and Longford, 1-14 apiece.
