David Lynch auction offers a glimpse of his personal and creative life
The innovative director David Lynch, who left indelible marks on film and television, passed away in January of this year. Now, Julien's Auctions is hosting the sale of The David Lynch Collection. More than 450 of the late director's possessions will be auctioned off online and at the company's auction house in Gardena, CA. For devotees of Lynch's work and worldview, just the experience of browsing the collection is pretty fascinating. The auction showcases plenty of items closely related to his career in film, such as a personalized director's chair, multiple cameras, lighting kits and memorabilia from his many iconic works. Other pieces more broadly reflect his passion for creativity, like audio equipment, musical instruments, painting supplies and a whole lot of literature and vinyl records. The collection also has furniture, like the couch from his 1997 classic Lost Highway , kitchen wares and many personal items from his life. You can even bid on his LaserDisc player and disc collection.

In search of flamboyant French film producer Pierre Edelman
Rue Robert-Estienne, a cul-de-sac in Paris's Champs-Elysées neighborhood, was where Pierre Edelman lived. Or rather, where he used to live. Since the spring of 2023, the producer has been nowhere to be found. Vanished. Unreachable. In March, journalist and essayist Guillaume Durand, accompanied by a longtime friend, went to the police station in Paris's 8 th arrondissement to report his disappearance. In one of his many lives, the man was a discreet yet essential figure in the world of cinema. Notably, he was a talent scout for Ciby 2000 – the now-defunct production company founded in 1990 by French construction magnate Francis Bouygues – and later at StudioCanal until the mid-2000s. Edelman's roster speaks for itself: David Lynch throughout the 1990s and 2000s, from Lost Highway (1997) to Mulholland Drive (2001); Pedro Almodóvar during the same period with High Heels (1991), The Flower of My Secret (1995) and All About My Mother (1999); Emir Kusturica, especially during his Palme d'Or win at the Cannes Film Festival in 1995 for Underground. To say that these directors, then at the height of their art, owe everything to Edelman would be an exaggeration. But without him, their careers clearly would not have been the same. Edelman was a matchmaker, a high-level connector in a film industry where human relationships are crucial. He was close to Dennis Hopper, Francis Ford Coppola and Oliver Stone; vacationed in Saint-Tropez with Clint Eastwood; visited Marlon Brando in Tahiti; and stayed at Jack Nicholson's villa on Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles.

‘A Desert' Review: Motel Hell
Alex (Kai Lennox), the hero of Joshua Erkman's languid, atmospheric neo-noir 'A Desert,' is a photographer past his prime. His first book, a collection of landscapes channeling the desuetude of small-town America, put him on the map 20 years ago, and now he's cruising the highways and byways of the Yucca Valley in California, chasing his former glory. It's in the nature of stories like this to offer its hero the reprieve of a disruption, and it arrives, violently, in the form of Renny (Zachary Ray Sherman), a lanky, keyed-up stranger Alex befriends at a roadside motel. Renny is clearly bad news, and for about 40 minutes, it seems obvious where 'A Desert' is going. But Ekrman's screenplay is slyly intelligent, and in the second act the film takes a sharp turn that is genuinely shocking. Erkman's use of stark lighting — high beams cutting through the desert night — evokes 'Lost Highway,' and there's some 'Mulholland Drive' in the underworld theatrics detailed on the story's periphery. Lynch is a difficult influence to wield responsibly, yet Erkman keeps it largely under control: 'A Desert,' if at times too ambitious, certainly feels distinct. It's a strange film, but it works, and feels grounded, because of its ensemble cast. Both Lennox and Sarah Lind, as Alex's wife, Sam, are serious and convincing, and the musician David Yow, as an oddball private detective following in Alex's wake, gives the movie some idiosyncratic flair. But the highlight is Sherman, whose menacing Renny is truly creepy and, when he really goes berserk, electrifying.
