3 new PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (May 9-11)

Table of Contents Table of Contents Balatro Ark: Survival Ascended Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun Our favorite thing about the start of a new month is getting our hands on a fresh batch of PlayStation Plus Essential games. While we only get three new entries per month, whereas the Extra and Premium subscribers get sometimes a dozen games added to the catalog, they are ours to 'keep' so long as our subscriptions are active. They also tend to be of higher quality, with this month being a standout in our eyes. For this upcoming weekend, we know you won't have trouble finding something in our list to have fun with but might struggle to decide which of these games you want to dedicate your time to. That's a good problem to have while we wait for Doom: The Dark Ages, but also have a little extra time with Lost Soul Aside getting delayed to the end of August. Balatro Unless you've been living under a rock for the past year, you know what Balatro is and just how addictive it is. If, for whatever reason, you didn't believe us when we sang its praises, now is the time to get in on the fun. Or, if you already played it on another platform, now you can earn a shiny new Platinum Trophy. Either way, this is one of the easiest games to recommend you play this weekend no matter what type of gamer you are. This is also a great game to introduce to friends and family thanks to how approachable it is. Just be aware you might not get the controller back for a while. You can take it in short bursts or marathon it, and the simple rules but deep levels of strategy keep it interesting each and every ante. Recommended Videos Balatro is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Mobile, and PC. Ark: Survival Ascended If you've been subscribed to PS Plus as long as we have, then you probably have a huge stack of survival games already, including another version of this one! However, Ark: Survival Ascended is more than just an expansion or remaster, but is a complete graphical remake of the original game with all the new content packed in. We all dream about living in a world with dinosaurs, and this game lets you start out cowering and fighting for your life to taming and building your own dino army. It is a brutal world, especially in the online servers with up to 70 players who may or may not be friendly but is fun every step of the way. Ark: Survival Ascended is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun We mentioned the new Doom game up top for a reason, and that reason was to give us an excuse to talk about Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. This game sticks to the classic boomer shooter look and feel with the trappings of the 40K universe. If you have any fond memories of fast-paced, gory, power-fantasy shooters set in giant maze-like levels full of secrets, you will have a blast with this game. It is so easy to pick up and instantly start having fun with. The graphics are intentionally retro but with clear design sensibilities that evoke the look of old-school shooters but will still look appealing today. And, most importantly, the sound and feedback of every weapon is pitch-perfect. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.

The PS5's Future Is Full Of Sword-Swinging Action Games

If you watched Sony's February 12, 2025 State of Play showcase, you might have noticed that there are an awful lot of third-person, melee-based combat games on the horizon for PS5 (as well as Xbox and PC). Some are expected this year, while others are more likely to land in 2026. Read More: Everything We Saw At 2025's First Big PlayStation State Of Play That's great news if you're a fan of games in which you can twirl the camera around your character while also slashing up baddies. As a lover of such games myself, I thought it fitting to take a closer look at some of these games, when they're coming out, and what was notable about their trailers from last night. While all of these games are likely to have their own unique spins on the broader genres of third-person hack 'n slash games, each with their own RPG systems, levels of difficulty, worlds of varying scope and size, and so forth, most of them seem to tap into a similar wavelength of speedy, slashy, hopefully stylishly energetic gameplay. Let's dig in (preferably with your sharp implement of choice). I thought Stellar Blade was…well, it was okay. I mean, sure, give me a sword while letting me look pretty and I'm happy to cut into some freaks who have a habit of wandering about post-apocalyptic spaces. But I couldn't tell you what the story was about (boilerplate sci-fi stuff) and oh. my. goddess did that soundtrack drive me out of my wits (I muted it and just listened to Gojira instead). As former Kotaku writer Levi Winslow discussed in their review of last year's slashy dress-'em-up, protagonist Eve also feels a little wonky to play at times—oh, and you'll have to drag around some stupid boxes—but the combat is a lot of fun and I rather enjoyed learning the combos to punish pathetic little things while dressed all hot like. Stellar Blade is getting a PC release (so you can totally behave yourselves with mods, you devils) as well as a DLC crossover with Goddess of Victory: Nikke, a free-to-play title developed by Stellar Blade's crew, Shift Up. There's not a whole lot of info about the Nikke DLC, but Nikke is a shooter and so I'm hoping this at least gives Stellar Blade an opportunity to improve its lackluster shooting mechanics. Stellar Blade isn't the only game we learned would soon be getting DLC. As we saw during last night's event, 2023's Pinnochio-themed soulslike Lies of P is also getting an expansion that serves as a prequel to the main game. I happened to really enjoy the presentation and vibes on display in Lost Soul Aside's trailer from Sony's event. Yes, watch that trailer again, but also just check out these environments! Gorgeous, right? Far too many games we saw were drowned in post-apocalypse gray. Lost Soul Aside seems to have some of that for sure, but it's nice to get a look at some sweeping fantasy landscapes that aren't afraid to show off some natural beauty and weirdo fantasy/sci-fi architecture. And it's no surprise, given the game's inspirations. Lost Soul Aside started its development in 2014 (a simpler era), when the initial one-man dev team of Yang Bing was inspired by Final Fantasy XV. Since Bing began work on the game, however, more people have joined, with at least 14 on staff as of 2019. Though the game was originally slated to arrive on the PS4, it would seem that's no longer the case. PS4 is not mentioned on the official store page for Lost Soul Aside, and it would seem Bing is really in favor of high framerates, as we perhaps all should be for such a game. And if you don't own a PS5, no worries. Lost Soul Aside is also coming to PC. Sony gave us a double dose of Capcom's Onimusha series during the showcase, with a nice throwback to 2002's Onimusha 2 via a remaster expected on May 23 (also coming to Xbox, Switch, and PC) and a fresh look at the franchise's new entry, Onimusha: Way of the Sword. As I pointed out in our rundown of the event, Way of the Sword seems to prioritize interacting with physical objects in a way that I think will really help set it apart from other modern samurai games, as well as from the other games I'm talking about here. During the trailer, protagonist Miyamato Musashi (whose likeness is based on that of legendary actor Toshiro Mifune) is seen grabbing objects for cover and even tossing enemies into hanging clothes which then entangle them. I'm excited to see how this plays in real time, because I sure do love being encouraged to not only take in my surroundings, but also to use them against my enemies. Time will tell just how well this mechanic works in the actual game. I'm hoping for enough objects to use, and enough different ways to use them, that what emerges is a host of surprising situations both awesome and hilarious. Hell Is Us was probably the most memorable trailer from the event for me. What's funny is that the brief glimpse of yet another world gone to heck and another character voiced by Elias Toufexis (of Adam Jensen fame) for me to get all hot and bothered over really didn't show that much gameplay. The mood and tone of the game is what really stands out. It may be yet another game about a damned world, but Hell Is Us seems more eager than most to mess around with its setting, playing with slightly unrealistic, borderline surreal-looking characters and enemies. Hopefully that will add enough layers of weirdness to its post-apocalyptic mire to distinguish it from all the other games that imagine bleak futures for us. Tides of Annihilation was yet another game set in a doomed world. (Really, folks, can we start imagining better futures? I'm begging for something more hopeful.) The game's website is rather sparse on details, but the trailer mostly tells us what we need to know: The world sucks, but your combat skills sure don't. It looks rather speedy too, with spectral allies seemingly fighting alongside protagonist Gwendolyn (the game seems to be riffing on Arthurian legend), and some massive-looking creatures we'll likely need to put down if we're to have any hope of saving this world. I'm getting a bit of a 'Met Gala' feel from this, which helps distinguish it from the grungier, more masculine vibes of the other games we saw last night, and there are glimpses of some environmental traversal that remind me a touch of NieR: course that's not all of the third-person action we saw during last night's event. Monster Hunter Wilds and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii are also arriving this year, though their styles of third-person gameplay are a touch different from those of the more Devil May Cry-esque and soulslike games that dominated the proceedings. . Upcoming PS5 Exclusive Might Be Shown at Tomorrow's State of Play

Now that we know the is real, it's time to speculate on what could possibly be shown. There are some slam dunk guesses, of course. Although it isn't actually known, the latest tweets from Death Stranding 2: On the Beach's Hideo Kojima suggest a new trailer for the sequel will be shown. But that's just one reveal from the 40+ minute event. What else could be shown? Well, one may guess a previously announced will be seen once again during the presentation. In a recent X post (as seen by Kami), the official Lost Soul Aside account reposted the February 2025 PlayStation State of Play announcement from Sony, which was made earlier today. Although this could be a totally harmless repost, it could also indicate that developer Ultizero Games is ready to show more of its action-adventure game. Lost Soul Aside has some pretty tight-knit ties with Sony's gaming platform. An announcement trailer was initially revealed as part of the PlayStation China Hero Project, an initiative from the gaming giant that aids China-based developers. More recently, a new Gameplay Trailer was revealed confirming a 2025 release window. Since the State of Play will cover PS5's slate for the year, it wouldn't be a stretch for Ultizero Games to show off its upcoming game during the showcase. Like any rumor or bit of speculation like this, take it with a grain of salt. We could be looking far too into this repost. As mentioned, since the game is heavily associated with PlayStation, it could just be the developer sharing the exciting news. On the flip side, the repost could mean they want players to know its game will be shown. Regardless, we won't know more until the State of Play tomorrow. Everything We Saw At Today's Big PlayStation State Of Play

Today, February 12, 2025, Sony held its first State of Play showcase of 2025. There weren't any massive surprises, but there were a ton of really neat-looking games that just might snag your attention. In particular, there was a good chunk of third-person melee action, typically featuring swords slashing up some monstrosity. Enough preamble, let's get into everything we saw at today's State of Play! Sony kicked off their show with a nice little look at Monster Hunter Wilds, in all its open-world, monster-bashing glory. If you haven't been following this game, it's worth checking out the trailer as it showcases a wide variety of beasts and environments. Monster Hunter Wilds ships on February 28, 2025. With some slick-looking art and 2D platforming hack-n-slash action, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance seesthe folks behind Streets of Rage 4 take a shot at resurrecting Sega's classic ninja series. Let's hope it plays as good as it looks. I mean, some of those landscapes are just too gorgeous. I could die there and be okay with it. Crossworlds, as the name suggests, seems like it's putting a world-hopping spin on the Sonic Racing series, with mid-race portals you can drive through to take you to other realms. It has a closed beta on February 21, which you can sign up for now. Oh hell yeah, it's a Digimon game! When was the last time you played one of those? Time to stop playing Palworld! With an ethereal presentation that promises a sword-swinging hero's journey through some pretty spectacular-looking environments, Lost Soul Aside looks promising for fans of speedy and flashy third-person melee action. Hopefully it will be stylish enough for the more discerning fans of the genre among us. Lost Soul Aside launches on March 30, 2025. A demo for the new Yakuza title arrives this week! Here's a mashup you probably didn't expect. Ichiban Kasuga from Like A Dragon brings his cheerful disposition and thrilling heroics to the world of Dave the Diver. This Portal-meets-Halo-like sequel is rolling out an alpha demo later this month, on February 27. Hey, if you always wanted to roam around a virtual hub dedicated to everything WWE (akin to the City in NBA 2K25 but for wrestling), check out the video above as Paul Heyman shows off The Island. Oh, hi Randy. And other Randy. The Randys (Randies?) showed up to give us a quick look at the latest game in the cartoony-yet-always-gory Borderlands universe. I'll have to wait till I get the game in my hands for sure, but from the looks of the trailer at least, the gunplay looks more solid and substantial than ever. The Randys also announced a special State of Play later this year that will go all in on BL4. Bordelrands 4 launches on September 23, 2025. Today's SoP showed off even more of the upcoming Split Fiction, the science fiction meets fantasy fusion co-op adventure from the makers of It Takes Two. I always sit up straight when a domineering masculine voice demands a status report. Maybe that's something I need to work out with my therapist. Either way, Directive 8020 is a flashy-looking science fiction horror romp that gives me some serious Alien vibes. Dead bodies on space stations, the creepiness of 'substances' in space? Heck yeah. Directive 8020 arrives on October 2nd. Five Nights At Freddy's is getting yet another game, likely filled with even more animatronic creeps just waiting to scare the heck out of you. With a lush, dark, and creepy aesthetic that's giving some gentle Tim Burton vibes, The Midnight Walk is a fresh-looking first-person shooter with some clear stealth and puzzle elements. It arrives on May 8, 2025. It'll also be playable on PS VR2! I keep telling people that Octopodes are super smart. And Darwin's Paradox! is all about that. This cute-looking platformer from Konami arrives later this year. A roguelike Dynasty Warriors just might be the twist to this legendary series you never thought you needed. It's available on PS5 and PS4 today if you're interested in giving it a shot. These days I continue to suspect that the PS2 era was peak gaming. It's all been downhill since then. Is that true? I don't really know. But what I do know is that an ambitious remaster of Onimusha 2 is arriving on May 23 if you want to get a taste of that PS2 magic. If Onimusha 2 wasn't enough, today's SoP followed it up with more Onimusha (nuts, right?). This one isn't a remaster, however. Rather, with a stylish modern presentation and some great-looking physics interactions, new series entry Onimusha: Way of the Sword is definitely worth putting on your radar with an expected release window of 2026. Okay, for those of you who enjoy MGS3, I'm happy for you. The game is fine. This remake doesn't inspire me to put up with it again, but hey, if you want to hear David Hayter play Snake again (who wouldn't?) It'll probably be worth it for that alone. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater arrives on August 28, 2025—but you knew that already, didn't you? Give me Adam Jensen—err, I mean his voice actor, Elias Toufexis—and a moody trailer for a pretty intense-looking sci-fi game and I've almost forgotten what Deus Ex even is. With a release date of September 4, 2025, Hell Is Us looks like it could be a gripping adventure. If you were fan of 2023's soulslike Lies of P, you'll be happy to check out a trailer for its upcoming expansion, arriving this summer. Where to begin with this one? Somehow, I imagine this is what Hideo Kojima's dreams look like—glimpses of play with violent interuptions. Kojima isn't involved in this game, but it still looks worth checking out as it seems quite imaginative. Days Gone might be mid at best for some folks, but I quite enjoyed it and with a permadeath mode and other features, I might be willing to give it a spin again. This remaster launches on April 25. If you're up for looking pretty and slashing weird monsters, Stellar Blade is getting a PC release and an expansion this June. Lost Records: Bloom & Rage Tape 1 sees the folks at Don't Nod take on the story of a fateful summer in the lives of a group of young friends, and how they're dealing with its ramifications as adults. Blue Prince is a puzzle game billing itself as an 'atmospheric architectural adventure' set inside a cryptic house that's hopefully filled with worthwhile secrets for those of us who like to snoop around where we probably don't belong. Abiotic Factor, already a huge hit on Steam, is a co-op survival game that gives me some Half-Life vibes, with strange creatures and scientific endeavors that hopefully won't doom us all. The original Armored Core, Armored Core Project Phantasma, Armored Core Master of Arena, and Patapon 3 are coming to PlayStation Plus for subscribers with access to the Classics Catalog. There sure were a lot of swords at today's event. And while Hell Is Us maybe looks most appealing to me, I'd be lying if I said Tides of Annihilation wasn't a close second. Blood-pumping music and stylish action complete with wall-running and first-person shooting are at the heart of Metal Eden. It's expected on May 6, 2025. Mindseye is an action adventure game about 'AI and human greed' destroying society. It's directed by Leslie Benzies, the former president of Rockstar North, so don't be surprised if it gives off some serious Grand Theft Auto vibes. Saros is the latest game from Housemarque, makers of such elegant games as Returnal and Resogun. It stars Rahul Kohli and while the trailer has no gameplay, it hints pretty strongly at this game building on what the studio achieved in Returnal, which, it seems, is exactly what they're aiming to do. Saros arrives in 2026. They closed the show with this one, so maybe it's worth keeping on your radar? And that wraps up our rundown of Sony's February 12, 2025 event! Nope, there was no Bloodborne or God of War. Sorry! For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
