North Syracuse neighbors not happy with new trash rollout
VILLAGE OF NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Some viewers have reached out to the Your Stories Team, wondering why the Village of North Syracuse didn't give its residents more notice about changes to its trash pickup. Neighbors who contacted us and those posting online said they were surprised when their trash and recycling bins were picked up this week and driven away by Syracuse Trash Haulers. Several people claimed they had no clue what was happening until an 'Urgent Notice' from the village was put on their door telling them of the trash change. 'Talk about poor planning,' one resident wrote on the Village of North Syracuse Facebook page. According to North Syracuse Mayor Gary Butterfield, the village's contract with Syracuse Haulers expires at the end of the month. Starting June 1, Butler Disposal will become the village's new trash and recycling hauler. He said the village is required to accept the lowest bid, which was Butler. Butterfield said the village worked with Onondaga County to help with the bidding process. He said they had a short window to alert the people of North Syracuse of the contract change. He added they posted the information on their website and Facebook page, but admits the communication wasn't perfect. He said they could have done better with the transition and getting the word out. The village said Butler will drop off new trash and recycling carts starting June 5. 'So, where is the trash supposed to be stored in the meantime?' Another resident posted on Facebook. The mayor said that while the carts will not be delivered until June 5, Butler will start picking up trash on the week of June 2nd. 'June 2nd, June 3rd, and June 4th, will have manual trash pickup that will pick up your bags at the road….trash on one side, recyclables on the other side. If you can save your recyclables/trash until the following week – perfect – you will have a tote available for the following week. Again, we apologize for any of these difficulties,' The Village of North Syracuse wrote on its Facebook page. Submit a form. Your Stories Q&A: Is construction starting on the final phases of Loop the Lake trail around Onondaga Lake?
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – You ask, we answer! Viewer Question: I see crews working near the Loop the Lake trail near Destiny USA, are they planning to finish the trail? It's a question that's been asked for years: When will the Loop the Lake trail finally be completed? We may not have an exact date, but an Onondaga County spokesperson said the project is a priority and they're in the process of taking core soil samples, so they can extend the trail. The soil samples are being taken around Murphy's Island, on the south end of the lake, near Destiny USA. The samples are required by state and federal agencies before construction can begin. Murphy's Island, has been attracting bald eagles for years. The water near the island doesn't freeze during the winter because of the warm water coming from the nearby wastewater treatment plant. It's become a habitat for the eagles to roost during the winter. Due to the area being a wildlife oasis, the project has had considerable oversight. The spokesperson said there are two more phases left to complete the 12-mile loop. What's left is to connect Onondaga Lake Park to the trailhead on Murphy's Island. It's about a 2.3-mile stretch, according to the county. A county spokesperson said there's no set timeline for construction; however, in a press release sent earlier this spring, the county's Department of Transportation stated construction was scheduled to start in 2027. Keep checking back for updates. Submit a form. Your Stories Q&A: Is construction starting on the final phases of Loop the Lake trail around Onondaga Lake? Your Stories Update: New traffic light installed at ‘dangerous' intersection
CLAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The NewsChannel 9 Your Stories team is getting results. Neighbors in Clay contacted the team, fed up with a 'dangerous' intersection where crashes kept happening. It's the corner of Caughdenoy Road and Maple Road, right off exit 2 of I-481 northbound. 'What do we have to have, somebody die?' Mike Greco asked back in February. NewsChannel 9's Rachel Polansky went for a drive with Greco to see the challenges firsthand. Greco pointed out what he called blind spots, poor lighting, and confusing signs. NewsChannel 9 pulled the records. In the last two years, there have been at least eight crashes at the intersection, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. In February, the Department of Transportation promised us they would take action and add a temporary traffic signal. Today, they kept that promise. NewsChannel 9 was there as crews got to work, installing poles and attaching lights. Neighbors hope the new traffic signal will bring relief and direction to drivers navigating the busy intersection. The NYSDOT tells NewsChannel 9 it will keep monitoring this intersection to see if a permanent traffic signal or other safety improvements should be considered. Submit a form. Hype, Not Guilt Needed To Push Women's Sports to Next Level
Earlier this month we looked into how football clubs struggle running men's and women's teams. This week, we have a frank interview about where the women's sports boom goes from here, and we bring you a case study in how to structure a takeover of a team on the up (or down). This week's Odd Lots newsletter also hosted Michael Caley, writer of the Expecting Goals, to chat about football financing, and in The Deal, A-Rod and Jason Kelly sat down with Gotham FC owner Carolyn Tisch Blodgett. Check them out.
