Detroit man wins Michigan Lottery prize worth $25,000 a year for life

A Detroit man said it still feels like he's living in a dream after recently winning $25,000 a year for life. Micale Garland, 64, thought he was being pranked when he logged into his Michigan Lottery account and saw the Lucky For Life prize pending, according to the Michigan Lottery. The ticket he purchased online had matched the five white balls drawn April 28 — 16, 19, 20, 33 and 40. More: Van Buren County man wins $5.46 million Lotto 47 jackpot "I have been playing Lucky For Life for a few years and I always buy my tickets online,' Garland told the Michigan Lottery. 'When I saw the email from the Lottery about claiming a prize, I logged into my account and thought I was being pranked when I saw my account balance. It wasn't until I called the Lottery and confirmed the prize with them that I believed I'd really won. It still feels like I'm living in a dream!' Garland recently claimed his prize and chose to receive the winnings as a one-time lump sum payment of $390,000 instead of annuity payments of $25,000 a year for 20 years or life, whichever is greater. He plans to use the money to take a trip and save the rest. This article originally appeared on Detroit Free Press: Michigan Lottery: Detroit man wins $25,000 a year for life

'I play Lotto 47 every once in a while and decided to buy a few tickets on a whim,' the man said while picking up his winnings from Michigan Lottery headquarters. 'When I saw the jackpot was over $5 million, I told my family: 'That money is going to be mine!'' He wasn't kidding. 'I checked the winning numbers online that night after the drawing and recognized them instantly,' he said. 'I had to recheck the numbers several times after seeing I matched them all because it was so surreal.' RECOMMENDED VIDEO This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. After making sure he had won, he said he 'ran out the door and down the street because I was so excited! 'My wife didn't know what was going on, so my daughter said to her, 'I think dad just won the lottery!'' The lucky player opted to receive his winnings as annual payments of about $182,000 for the next 30 years rather than a one-time, lump-sum payment of $3.7 million. Despite running out on them when he first realized he won, the man plans to take care of his family with the money. The retailer, a Speedway gas station in Kalamazoo, Mich., will also receive a bonus of $5,000 for selling the winning lottery ticket, according to the lottery. The winner admitted: 'Winning a prize like this feels unreal and is still sinking in.' Read More Toronto Maple Leafs NHL Editorials World Toronto & GTA

A man bought lottery tickets 'on a whim.' He ran down the street when he won $5.46 million.

A Michigan man had an unforgettable reaction to winning a $5.46 million lottery prize. The 43-year-old winner, who remained anonymous, purchased his Lotto 47 ticket from a Speedway gas station in Kalamazoo, according to a news release. He told state lottery officials he'd play the game "once in a while, and decided to buy a few tickets on a whim." But he had a hunch that he'd win: "When I saw the jackpot was over $5 million, I told my family: 'That money is going to be mine!'" The Van Buren County resident's Lotto 47 ticket matched the numbers from the April 23 drawing: 13-25-30-35-38-46. Jackpot rises to $94 million: Powerball winning numbers for May 12 drawing The man said that finding out he hit the jackpot was "so surreal" and that he checked his numbers multiple times to be certain. "Once I was sure I'd really won the jackpot, I ran out the door and down the street because I was so excited!" he said to lottery officials. He chose to receive his prize money as an estimated $182,000 annual payment over a 30-year period. The other option was a lump sum of $3.7 million. The winner plans to use his new fortune for his wife and kids. Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli said in the news release that the gas station where the ticket was purchased will "receive a $5,000 bonus commission for selling the winning ticket." Tickets can be purchased in person at gas stations, convenience stores, and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets. Getty Images/iStockphoto A Michigan lottery player ran out into the street after realizing he won a multimillion-dollar jackpot, officials say. The 43-year-old Van Buren County man, who has chosen to remain anonymous, bought several Lotto 47 tickets 'on a whim' at a gas station in Kalamazoo, because the prize was just too good not to take a chance, lottery officials said in a May 7 news release. 'When I saw the jackpot was over $5 million, I told my family: 'That money is going to be mine!'' the man said. When the April 23 drawing came around and his prediction came true, it was enough to send him running out the door and down the street. 'I checked the winning numbers online that night after the drawing and recognized them instantly. I had to recheck the numbers several times after seeing I matched them all because it was so surreal,' he told officials. 'My wife didn't know what was going on, so my daughter said to her: 'I think dad just won the Lottery!'' he said. 'Winning a prize like this feels unreal and is still sinking in.' He went to lottery headquarters to pick up his prize and opted to receive annual payments of $182,000 for 30 years, instead of an instant one-time sum of $3.7 million. 'With his winnings, he plans to take care of his family,' officials said. Kalamazoo is about a 50-mile drive south from Grand Rapids.
