Loughgall get past Newington maintain perfect start to Championship campaign

Loughgall lead the way in the Playr-Fit Championship after extending their 100 per cent start with a 3-2 win over Newington. After falling behind to Patrick Downey's 12th minute opener at Inver Park, Darren Murphy's side levelled through Kirk McLaughlin before second-half strikes from Paul McElroy and Harry Norton put them in command ahead of Jay Donnelly pulling one back late on.

Aaron McLaughlin reveals the personal event he's missing in bid for NI Rally title

A top-three points-scoring finish at the Loughgall Stages Rally would guarantee the Donegal man a first title and see him become the second Irishman in history to conquer the series. Stephen Wright ended the dominance of local drivers in 2019 – but only after a tie-break that declared him the champion based on his greater number of second-placed finishes. McLaughlin currently heads the standings having netted full points at Bishopscourt and the Tour of the Sperrins and kept his scoreboard ticking over at May's Maiden City Stages. The formbook therefore suggests that McLaughlin should get his title quest over the line at the single-venue event having won Loughgall two times previously. He also arrives match-fit from the Donegal International Rally where he covered more than 200 miles in his Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. 'I have done Loughgall every year since 2021, so I have good knowledge of all the stages. I'm feeling relaxed and I'm looking forward to Saturday when it comes,' said the top seed. 'Having won it twice before, Loughgall is one of the few rallies that I go into confident of coming away with a good result. 'However, I know that with the stages taking between four to five minutes to complete, any small mistakes, a spin or an overshoot, can leave you in trouble. 'If you do that, you can be guaranteed that there is someone ready to take your place. 'I will be missing a family wedding for the simple fact I have the chance to go and win the Championship, so I suppose I had better go and deliver. 'If I can do it, it would be my first title win, so I'll be over the moon. I would even be happy to retire, then!' With no Derek McGarrity on the entry list, the main threat to McLaughlin's dream is fellow Volkswagen Polo R5 exponent Peadar Hurson, although top modified driver – and multiple Loughgall Stages Rally victor – Damian Toner cannot be discounted in his Ford Escort Mk2. The same also applies to Jason Black who returns to his local meeting in a Toyota Starlet, and Marty Toner is part of a near 70-strong entry in a Super 2000 Proton Satria Neo. Admission to Loughgall Country Park is £10 per adult and includes parking and a rally programme, with accompanied under-16s gaining access for free. The action is due to commence at 9.30am, with the prizegiving pencilled in for 5pm.
