In Italian debut, 2027 America's Cup to be held in Naples
It will be the first time the world's most prestigious regatta takes place in Italy and the home advantage gives the hosts a chance to finally win one of the oldest competitions in international sport. "I am proud to announce that the America's Cup will be held, for the first time in history, in Italy. Naples will be the host city in 2027 for the 38th edition of the world's most famous and prestigious sailing tournament," Meloni said in a statement. The races will be held in the spring and summer of 2027. "The fight for the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup will take place under the watchful shadow of Mt Vesuvius and just off the waterfront of the vibrant city," read a statement from organisers. Holders Team New Zealand -- who have held the America's Cup since 2017 -- will be defending the title they won by defeating INEOS Britannia in Barcelona in October last year. While it is traditionally the holders who choose the venue, Team New Zealand said last month they could not secure government backing to host the regatta. But Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton welcomed the alternative choice of venue and said Italians were "the most passionate and engaged America's Cup audience". He cited Italian challenger Luna Rossa, which lost to New Zealand in the 2021 edition in Auckland, as "such an amazing team and strong competitor". "So, from the Defender's position it certainly feels like we are entering the lion's den competitively, but from an event perspective it feels like the perfect venue to host the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup," Dalton said. Italian crews have reached the final match race three times, most recently in 2021. Luna Rossa fell at the penultimate hurdle last year, eliminated by INEOS Britannia in Barcelona. The British crew went on to lose to New Zealand in the final. The status of both the New Zealand crew and their British challengers are shrouded in uncertainty just two years before the next event. Peter Burling, who skippered New Zealand to victory in 2021 and 2024, will play no part in their bid to retain their title in 2027 after he failed to reach an agreement with the team management. And British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS Britannia team has withdrawn its plan to compete in the next edition after a bitter wrangle with the skipper last year, Ben Ainslie. Ratcliffe, who also owns Manchester United, said last month it had "reluctantly withdrawn its challenge" after a six-month delay in reaching an agreement with Ainslie's company. That clears the way for Ainslie to mount a challenge himself -- if the British former Olympic gold medallist can raise the substantial funding required.

Team NZ America's Cup defence set for Italy
The America's Cup will be sailed in Italy for the first time in 2027. Defenders Team New Zealand have opted to host the 38th America's Cup in Naples, on the waters of one of their fiercest rivals. After last year's event in Barcelona, racing for the 'Auld Mug' will shift to the coastline between Castel dell'Ovo and Posillipo in 2027, while team bases will be established at Bagnoli. After rejecting a return to Auckland, Team New Zealand chief executive officer Grant Dalton said the team had a "very efficient venue selection process" to award hosting rights. "There is a raw spirit and absolute pride in Italy that seems so appropriate to have the next America's Cup here," Dalton said. "It feels like we are bringing it to the people, in our ambition to continually grow the audience of the America's Cup and sport of sailing. "Italians are the most passionate and engaged America's Cup audience, and obviously, it is the home of Luna Rossa, who are such an amazing team and strong competitor. "From the defender's position, it certainly feels like we are entering the lion's den competitively, but from an event perspective, it feels like the perfect venue to host the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup." In 2012 and 2013, Naples hosted two America's Cup world series events in the lead-up to the 34th America's Cup. As current holder and trustee of the America's Cup, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron said it was looking forward to Naples. "Bringing the Cup back to Europe - into the heart of one of the world's most vibrant sailing communities - not only honours the rich history of the event, but also creates an incredible opportunity to showcase New Zealand sailing and innovation on a global stage," Commodore David Blakey said. Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi said hosting the event would "generate a substantial economic impact on our territory". "The event is set to be the most significant sporting occasion ever hosted by Naples, transforming the city's iconic Gulf into a stage for spectacular races among the world's elite sailing teams. An opportunity to show the world not only the beauty of our landscape, but also the city's ability to competently address the great challenges of the present." Manfredi said Bagnoli was a strategic area "where the Government has decided to invest decisively, with the goal of finally returning it to the city and its citizens". "The complex work of environmental remediation and redevelopment in Bagnoli is already underway, and progressing according to plan. The America's Cup will serve as a powerful accelerator for tourism, the maritime economy, local entrepreneurship and the development of new skills, providing a tangible preview of what this area can become, upon completion of its urban regeneration." Team New Zealand announced a replacement for helmsman Peter Burling this week, with Australian Nathan Outteridge to stay part of the crew, alongside Blair Tuke, Andy Maloney and Sam Meech, while British sailor Chris Draper has also been signed-up. The challenger entries open in June, with Alinghi and Ineos Britannia already stating they would not be competing again in 2027.

Arrivederci: Italy confirmed as host for America's Cup 2027
Naples, Italy will host the 38th America's Cup between March and August 2027, the Italian government has announced alongside Emirates Team New Zealand. It marks the first time the prestigious sailing event will be held in Italy, a long-time competitor with a deep history in the regatta. One of Europe's oldest cities, Naples will stage the Cup racing between Castel dell'Ovo and Posillipo in the Gulf of Naples under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Team bases would be set up in the Bagnoli district, which was currently undergoing major urban regeneration. Team NZ chief executive Grant Dalton said he couldn't be more excited to announce Naples as the host venue for the next America's Cup. 'By bringing the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup to this country, it feels like we are bringing it to the people, in our ambition to continually grow the audience of the America's Cup and the sport of sailing.' He praised the Italian sailing community as one of the "most passionate and engaged", and described Naples as "the perfect venue" for the event. "There is a raw spirit and absolute pride in Italy that seems so appropriate to have the next America's Cup here," Dalton added. Italy was home to Luna Rossa, Team NZ's long-time rival, making the setting especially meaningful from a competitive standpoint. The Italian outfit came up short against Team New Zealand in two America's Cup challenges, both in Auckland in 2000 and 2021. Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron commodore David Blakey said Naples hosting the America's Cup offered an "incredible opportunity" to showcase New Zealand sailing and innovation on a global stage. "We are proud to be defending the Cup there in 2027. "Our squadron members had an unforgettable experience travelling to Europe for the latest America's Cup, and we look forward to delivering even more exclusive experiences and support opportunities in Naples, Italy." Naples previously hosted America's Cup World Series events in 2012 and 2013, drawing an estimated crowd of more than one million people. The announcement followed a successful bid supported by the Italian Government, with politicians calling the event a catalyst for tourism, urban development, and national pride. Hosting the America's Cup was expected to accelerate redevelopment plans for the Bagnoli district and draw global attention to the city's waterfront, Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredin said. The announcement of Naples as the host city marked the final tack away from any lingering hopes that Auckland might host the next America's Cup defence. Tātaki Auckland Unlimited (TAU) announced Auckland would be unable to proceed with a bid to host the Cup in April. "Auckland's bid was contingent on a three-way funding partnership between Auckland Council, central government and the private sector. MBIE has informed TAU that the Government is unable provide the funds required and on that basis the bid cannot proceed," he said. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the America's Cup would have been "nice to do" but that the Government would have needed to put up "a lot of money". "We've inherited a very messy set of economic books and I think most New Zealanders would sit there and go, 'What's the choice, actually upgrading regional provincial hospitals across New Zealand or actually investing in America's Cup?' and it's pretty clear to me that actually New Zealanders want us to invest in proper infrastructure. "We have a responsibility to be very grown-up and responsible with taxpayers' money."

Naples to host 38th edition of America's Cup in 2027
"I am proud to announce that the America's Cup will be held in Italy for the first time in history," Meloni said in a statement. "Naples will be the host city for the 38th edition of the world's most famous and prestigious sailing tournament," she added. The races will be held in the spring and summer of 2027, according to the tournament's organisers. The 38th America's Cup "will take place under the watchful shadow of Mt Vesuvius and just off the waterfront of the vibrant city," organisers said in a statement. Trophy holders Team New Zealand, who have held the America's Cup since 2017, will be defending the title won in October 2024 in Barcelona. Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton called Italian challenger Luna Rossa "an amazing team and strong competitor". He also praised Italians as "the most passionate and engaged America's Cup audience". "From the [title] defender's position, it certainly feels like we are entering the lion's den, but from an event perspective it feels like the perfect venue to host the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup," Dalton said. Despite their recent success in the competition, Team New Zealand said last month they could not secure government backing to host the prestigious regatta.

America's Cup: Team New Zealand announces Naples, Italy, will host 38th edition in 2027
'By bringing the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup to this country, it feels like we are bringing it to the people, in our ambition to continually grow the audience of the America's Cup and the sport of sailing. 'Italians are the most passionate and engaged America's Cup audience and obviously it is the home of Luna Rossa, who are such an amazing team and strong competitor. So, from the defender's position, it certainly feels like we are entering the lion's den competitively, but from an event perspective, it feels like the perfect venue to host the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup.' While it will be the first time Naples has hosted the America's Cup proper, the city played host to two America's Cup World Series events in 2012 and 2013. Naples, south of Rome on Italy's west coast, had emerged as a strong contender to win hosting rights, with Athens, Greece, believed to have also been in the running. It will create something of a home event for challenging syndicate Luna Rossa, who recently signalled their intention to return to the arena. While there were restrictions on how long teams had to wait after the regatta in Barcelona finished before returning to their AC75s, the Italians have already been sailing their scaled-down AC40. 'Italy has long been one of Team New Zealand's fiercest and most passionate rivals in the America's Cup, and we are thrilled to see Naples, Italy, named as the host venue for the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup Match,' Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron commodore David Blakey said. 'Bringing the Cup back to Europe – into the heart of one of the world's most vibrant sailing communities – not only honours the rich history of the event, but also creates an incredible opportunity to showcase New Zealand sailing and innovation on a global stage. 'Naples, Italy, promises to be a spectacular setting for the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup, as well as the Youth and Women's regattas. We are proud to be defending the Cup there in 2027.' The announcement comes a day after Team New Zealand confirmed their core sailors for the new campaign. Nathan Outteridge will take over as skipper after Peter Burling's departure, while Blair Tuke, Andy Maloney, and Sam Meech have all returned for another campaign. The team also confirmed the recruitment of British sailor Chris Draper among that group.
