Vote for Scottburgh surfer to claim emerging athlete title
Scottburgh surfer Louise Lepront (17) is elated to be nominated in the Emerging Athlete category for this year's GSport Awards. The awards celebrates its 20th edition by spotlighting South Africa's finest in women's sport, with a stellar line-up of finalists unveiled to be contesting the 20 categories open for public voting. Lepront's category showcases the future of South African sport. 'This is all exciting and I feel privileged to receive this nomination,' said the young surfer. GSport mentioned that Lepront is making quite a name for herself in the world of surfing. She won bronze at the ISA World Juniors and back-to-back WSL Africa wins, proving she is one to watch. Lepront first began surfing at the age of nine after watching her brother, Luc, having tons of fun in the water. 'I enjoy being out in the open in nature, the rush of the wave and getting to travel and meet people,' she said. 'Last year I came third in the ISA World U16 games. This year so far I have made the Challenger Series, as well as won the SA Open Title at Port Alfred in April.' 'I am now looking forward to heading with my brother to represent South Africa at the ISA World Open Games, followed by the Challenger events in Portugal and Brazil; finishing off in Hawaii and Australia early next year.' The Lepront siblings have always had support from Scottburgh and surrounding areas, and now, Louise needs your help to claim the Emerging Athlete title with public votes. Voting opened on August 1 and closes on Sunday, August 10 at midnight. Voting is free and requires registration for membership (also free). Louise wins SA champs
Scottburgh's Louise Lepront and Hayden McNicol won the women's and men's titles at The Royal St Andrews SA Open Championships, presented by Rip Curl last week. Conditions were tricky but contestable on the day, with big scores pouring through for the loaded final heats of the event. The women's final was a close affair. Tash van Greunen was in the lead until the last minute when Louise picked up a bomb and executed a solid crack on her backhand. It was an agonising wait for the score, but it was enough to put her in the lead as the final siren went. Tash was just behind in second, with Aimee du Preez and Leah Lepront in third and fourth, respectively. 'I saw that wave coming, and I was just lucky that Tash didn't get it,' said Louise. 'It was washy, but it cleaned up, and I knew I needed to do one big hit. So I managed to do a decent backhand turn, made it, and got the score at the last minute. So stoked to get the win.' In the open men's final, Andrew la Verge kicked off the battle with a six-point ride on the board that put everybody into combat mode. Hayden McNicol returned strong with a good opening ride and a solid backup. As he was doing the run around after his second wave, the announcer called his scores, which put him in first place. Despite a determined comeback from La Verge and flashes of brilliance from Mitch du Preez and Clinton Gravett, Hayden stayed in the lead and was crowned the 2025 champion. In the team event, Ethekwini Surfriders' Association took the win from Buffalo City, with Nelson Mandela Bay Surfriders in third.
