Is it legal to shoot fireworks in Louisiana? What to know before July 4th

Now that summer is here, the Fourth of July holiday is right around the corner, meaning that nights lit up by fireworks will soon be here. The use of fireworks on Independence Day is a long-standing tradition throughout the U.S., ever since the first official observance in 1777 when the Founding Fathers envisioned a celebration with "illuminations." If you're planning on setting off fireworks on July 4 this year in Louisiana, it may be worth knowing rules and regulations regarding exactly when you are allowed to use fireworks. In Louisiana, you can typically begin buying fireworks for July 4th as early as June 16 at noon, and up until midnight on July 5. For celebrating New Year's Eve, fireworks can be purchased in Louisiana from noon on Dec. 15 until midnight on Jan. 1, according to American Pyrotechnics Association. However, while you are able to purchase fireworks during these time periods, you may not be allowed to use them depending on when the usage of fireworks is permitted in Louisiana. Fireworks are usually permitted during a specific time period in Louisiana and, in some areas, you can light fireworks from June 25 until July 5 and from Dec. 15 until Jan. 1. However, local laws and ordinances may have differing dates for when fireworks are allowed. Generally, the use of fireworks is prohibited between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. in Louisiana, except during extended hours, from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m., on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. In Louisiana, fireworks are often prohibited within a certain distance of churches, schools, hospitals or public buildings, according to Louisiana State Legislature. In Louisiana, certain types of fireworks are illegal to posses, sell or use, including cherry bombs, tubular salutes, two-inch American-made salutes, repeating bombs, aerial bombs, as well as firecrackers exceeding certain dimensions, torpedoes exceeding certain diameters, Roman candles larger than a certain size, and sky rockets larger than a specific weight, according to Louisiana State Legislature. Is it legal to park in front of someone's house in Louisiana? Here's what parking law says

If you find yourself in a neighborhood, or on a residential street, needing to park, it may be worth knowing the laws regarding parking in front of someone's house. Conversely, if you see that someone is parked in front of your house, are they legally allowed to park there? Even if it's not illegal to park in front of someone else's house, it can be considered inconsiderate, especially if it's for an extended amount of time. In Louisiana, it's typically permissible to park on a public street in front of someone's house, as long as it does not violate any local parking ordinances or block a driveway, sidewalk or fire hydrant, according to Louisiana State Legislature. However, individual parishes or municipalities may have specific parking regulations that could limit where and when you can park in a public residential area. In the case of private residential areas, you are allowed to park on a private street in front of someone's house as long as the street is not blocked or restricted by the homeowner or Homeowner's Association (HOA). If a private street is under the governance of an HOA, then there may be specific parking rules and regulations that could restrict parking in certain areas, the length of time vehicles can be parked or prohibit parking all together in certain areas, according to FindLaw. Private streets are those not open to public use, meaning access is restricted to specific individuals or entities, such as a HOA or individual property owners. Private streets are typically found in gated communities, subdivisions, or areas where access is limited to residents and guests, says Louisiana Laws. If a vehicle is parked on the street in front of a house for an extended period without moving, the police can be called in order to check it out. If a vehicle is parked there for over 72 hours, then it can potentially be ticketed or towed. Presley Bo Tyler is a reporter for the Louisiana Deep South Connect Team for Gannett/USA Today.
