Hazyview malls donate blankets on Mandela Day

In a heart-warming gesture of community spirit, and as part of their Mandela Day celebrations, Lowveld Mall and Hazyview Junction jointly donated more than 200 blankets to eight tribes surrounding their locations. Mandela Day is a globally celebrated occasion, held annually on July 18, to commemorate Nelson Mandela's legacy through 67 minutes of public service. Under the strategic guidance of centre manager Hilary van den Berg, and Twin City Development's community liason officer Peer Mkhonto, the two shopping centres facilitated the donation. This charitable engagement underscores the centres' dedication to community social investment and their consistent support of the communities that sustain their operations. 'These malls always look after the people they are working with,' he said, reinforcing a community-first ethos that transcends transactional relationships. The participating Tribal Council Authorities include Mathibela, Nkuna, Masoyi, Khumalo, Mdluli, Hoxane, Jonkilanga and Kgarudi, each of which will identify a minimum of 25 families most in need of winter relief. The donation aimed to provide not merely physical comfort, but also symbolic affirmation of solidarity and shared humanity. We are not giving the blankets to be recognised, but are doing this to give back to our community. 'These sentiments echo Mandela Day's guiding principle – that collective goodwill can generate tangible social upliftment. The co-ordinated effort by Lowveld Mall and Hazyview Junction exemplifies an operational model where business and benevolence converge, reflecting a broader commitment to socio-economic development, stakeholder engagement and inclusive progress within the retail sector.
